F2 Medical Oncology
The Oncology Department is staffed by both medical and clinical oncology consultants
with plans to continue consultant expansion. There is a fully equipped radiotherapy
department which has been awarded ISO 9001 and 9002 for its excellence.
The department is accredited as a Cancer Unit and is formally part of the North London
Cancer Network which includes the Royal Free Hospital and University College Hospital
as the Joint Cancer Centre for the network. It has a unique status as the only Cancer
Unit with full radiotherapy facilities within the network, and this has given the department
a particular advantage for training purposes because the majority of oncology posts in
the near future will be based in similar units. In recognition of this a further clinical
oncology specialist registrar post was awarded for 2003.
There is an active clinical trials programme with a full complement of staff in the
research office funded by the North London Cancer Network and the HEAL Cancer
Charity. In the past, the department has been one of the major recruiters of patients into
clinical trials in the country.
The department benefits from having Palliative Care onsite with Macmillan nurses
integrated into the oncology service and consultant-led palliative care ward rounds.

The North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust is committed to the community it
serves; a multi-cultural area of North London with a population of 500,000. The area has
a high deprivation index with many single parent families, refugees and travelling
families. 30% of the local population does not speak English. We aim to provide a high
quality, comprehensive healthcare service which reflects the needs of the community.
