Ethical reasoning is reasoning about right and wrong human conduct. In community settings, complex and challenging situations often arise where one is required to make an ethical decision in order to respond, for example: You observe a supervising teacher making fun of a child; You are assigned to work with an agency (e.g. Planned Parenthood) whose mission contradicts your core values; You see an employee of the organization falsifying data for personal financial gain. Indicate to what extent each of the following statements represents how you would normally respond in such a situation. 1=almost all the time to 5=almost never Question I find it hard to explain my own position about such an issue to others who don’t share my point of view. When I think about my core set of values, the right decision immediately becomes clear. Identifying the important ethical issues in such a situation is less critical than doing the right thing. In such a situation, I think deeply about what I hold true. Thinking about the potential negative consequences for others would inform my decision. In such a situation, recognizing the important ethical issues comes easily to me. I would find it difficult to understand what ethical concerns are important. When I think of one solution that seems right, it raises other ethical concerns that cannot be ignored. I can easily identify what I believe about such a situation. I find the solution to one ethical issue often involves thinking about other ethical issues. In such a situation, I look for confirmation of my ideas from coworkers or others who are around me. Such an issue should be easy to solve, and if it is not, I must be doing something wrong. 1= Almost All the Time 5= Almost Never Total Responses 0 1 3 2 1 7 3 1 3 0 0 7 0 1 3 2 1 7 2 3 1 1 0 7 3 1 1 1 0 6 1 4 1 1 0 7 0 1 0 3 3 7 1 3 1 2 0 7 3 3 0 1 0 7 3 1 2 1 0 7 2 1 4 0 0 7 0 1 3 3 0 7 6. Scenario repeated for convenience: Ethical reasoning is reasoning about right and wrong human conduct. Indicate to what extent each of the following statements represents your point of view about such a situation. (1 = to a great extent; 5 = not at all) Question I reflect on what action would represent who I am on the inside. If addressing the situation will bring negative consequences for me, I prefer to avoid it. Sometimes it is all right to break the rules in order to do the right thing. As long as I do what my supervisor tells me, I feel I have done the right thing. The people directly affected by my decision should be consulted. There are standards of good behavior, and I try to follow these standards. I always try to do what others would approve. If responding in a certain way will advance my career, then I will pursue that course of action. If I follow posted policies and guidelines, I will avoid doing something ethically wrong. Whatever keeps me out of trouble is the best course of action. I value listening to others’ opinions on an issue. As long as my intentions are good, I am comfortable with my decision. 1 = To a Great Extent 5 = Not at All Total Responses 4 2 1 0 0 7 2 0 1 3 1 7 0 5 2 0 0 7 0 1 1 4 1 7 1 3 3 0 0 7 4 3 0 0 0 7 1 1 3 2 0 7 0 2 2 1 2 7 2 1 1 2 1 7 1 2 2 2 0 7 2 3 2 0 0 7 1 2 4 0 0 7 7. Of all the courses that you have taken in your major, which have been the best and why? Text Response I am not sure I could pick just one, but I would say my Anthro of Religion class, also I was almost talked into taking it as I am not a very religious person. But it has been a very eye opening class. Linguistics was an awesome course extremely informative and engaging another great class was peoples and cultures of africa The best one I took was a transfer elective course called 'Arab Society' during my study abroad in Morocco. This class substituted "Comparative Muslim Cultures" within my major. It was an excellent anthropology elective because I learned about different topics within the 'Arab' world and enriched my study abroad experience. Anthropology of Hiphop, Anthropology of Religion, and Physical Anthropology. The professors for each class (Hargrove, Lukens-Bull, and Kephart, respectively) were obviously passionate about the topics. People and Culutres of the World, provides a solid foundation for the understanding and respect one should have for other cultures. Gender, Sexuality, & Culture; Major Authors: Zora Neale Hurston; and Human Sexual Behavior. The Hurston class was wonderful because it was great to see Hurston not only as an anthropologist but as a writer of great literature as well. Human Sexual Behavior is fascinating and enjoyable, and Gender, Sexuality, & Culture has been a great supplement to further honing my critical thinking and analysis skills. China in Context 19.
