Chapter 11-1
The Work of Gregor Mendel
• Genetics is the study of heredity (the passing of traits
from parents to offspring)
• Gregor Mendel (the “father” of modern genetics)
was the first to study genetics and determine “rules”
that influence heredity and can be used to predict
hereditary trends
• He studied pure-bred and hybrid plants by cross
pollinating them
• He concluded that “factors” were passed from
parents to offspring (genes)
Main Concepts continued
• Mendel concluded that genes can be in different
forms called alleles
• Mendel discovered that some alleles are
dominant over other alleles (recessive)
• During meiosis, alleles separate (segregate)
independently from each other when forming
gametes
