Objective: to learn the knowledge and skills needed to make smart decisions about what we put in our mouths! Nutrition is the science that studies food and how it benefits the body. Good Nutrition is the key to healthy growth and development. Students who are well nourished learn better! Nutritionist or dieticians make about $50,000 a year and are found in a variety of settings. Some have their own practices or may work for schools and corporations! Provides energy for everyday activity. Gives you raw material such as vitamins and minerals. Is an enjoyable activity. You feel satisfied You eat to rid hunger You need energy You feel hungry As a group, discuss the difference between hunger & appetite. Nutrients are substances in food that your body needs in order to grow, have energy and stay healthy! Carbohydrates Proteins Minerals Fats Water Vitamins Starches and sugars that provide energy. ◦ Starches- Rice, bread, pasta, potatoes, beans ◦ Sugars- Milk, honey, fruit Your body does not need any additional sugars! Proteins repair your body tissues and cells. ◦ Incomplete proteins: Amino acids that are found in plant foods (grains, nuts, beans) ◦ Complete proteins: Amino acids that are found in animal sources (meat, eggs and dairy products) Nutrients that supply energy, keep your skin healthy and promote normal growth. Fats transport certain vitamins through your body and help build cell membranes. Two Types of fats: ◦ Saturated fats ◦ Unsaturated fats Saturated Fats: ◦ Solid at room temperature Butter, fats in meat and poultry, and dairy products. Unsaturated Fats: ◦ Liquid at room temperature Plant sources, vegetable oils, nuts, olives and avocados. Substances that help regulate the body’s functions. Your body needs vitamins to produce energy, fight infections and much more! ◦ Water Soluble Dissolve in water and have to be replaced everyday. ◦ Fat Soluble Dissolve in fats Nutrients help strengthen bones and teeth. Help keep blood healthy. Keep the heart and other organs working properly Calcium, magnesium, phosphorous: ◦ Helps and renews your bones Iron- needed for making red blood cells Sodium- Salt your body makes ◦ You Do Not Need To Add Salt To Your Food!!! Helps with digestion, carries nutrients throughout the body, removes wastes from the body and regulates body temperature. Drink 8-10 glasses of water each day, OR 3 water bottles from the vending machine!
