Chapter 18 Correctional Psychology Overview of Correctional Psychology • Define Correctional Psychology-The subfield of psychology that is the topic of this chapter, must be highly attuned to these many nuances of criminal behavior. Correctional psychologists consult with the correctional system, provide direct services to persons convicted of crime, and conduct research on psychological issues relevant to prisons, jails, and community corrections. Persistent Offenders • Often who we concentrate on in criminal justice; • Often polydrug users-using whatever combination of drugs that are available at an affordable price; • Crime may be separate from their drug use; • Candidates for treatment if incarcerated-why? • Do not specialize in any type of offending yet antisocial behavior is present; • Often they desist from crime –why? White-Collar Offender • Individual or corporate offenders; • Do not have same family ties as persistent offender; • Offending may begin later rather than teen yearswhy? • Why aren’t these type of offenders mentioned in psychological literature? • If they offend early, often the information may have not been brought to the attention of public officials-why? Serious Mental Disorder • Can “rob” some individuals of the mental state needed to hold them responsible for their crimes-why? • Most mentally disordered individuals are not criminal and most criminals are not mentally ill; • Addictions, according to our text (sexual, alcohol, kleptomania) do not always contribute to committing crimes. Correctional Psychologists • Contribute to helping inmates better adapt to prison life. Careers in Correctional Psychology • Services of Correctional Psychologists include: Assessment, diagnosis, and classification; • Treatment or intervention; • Research, planning and evaluation (p. 603).
