CHEM 4511: Physical Chemistry 1 Fall 2016 Instructor: Prof. J. M. Weber Technicalities(1) • Requirements: – CHEM 3311 or 3351 – MATH 2400 or APPM 2350 – PHYS 1110 or 2020 (all minimum grade C-). – Requires prerequisite or corequisite course of PHYS 1120. • Class Hours: MWF 10:00 am to 10:50 am • Office Hours: Mon: 4 pm – 5 pm Wed, Thu: 3 pm – 4 pm Technicalities(2) • Office: – JILA tower A709 – phone 492-7841 – email [email protected] – web site: http://jila.colorado.edu/weberlabs/course-CHEM4511.html • Exam Schedule: – Two-hour exams: September 13, October 18, November 29 6-8 pm, MUEN E0046 – Final Exam: date, time, and location TBA Technicalities(3) • Problem Sets (Homework): – usually handed out (i.e. posted on course web site) on Fridays, to be returned the following Fridays before class – homework will be graded by graduate student Jon Church – credits accumulated over the semester determine your homework performance grade. Everyone may drop one homework assignment without penalty. • Travel: Due to seminar travel, I will not give a lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 9, and maybe on Monday, Nov. 7. As the 2-hr exams are held outside of class hours, the class hours may be cancelled on these days. Stay tuned for details later in the semester. Technicalities(4) • Additional Lectures (voluntary): There may be some voluntary additional lectures to cover some material in more depth, review some math and physics, or do some computer experiments to enhance learning. In that case, time and place is to be announced. • Final Grades: – Homework performance: 40% – Clicker questions (participation) 5% – Average of the two-hour-exams: 30% – Final exam: 25% Technicalities(5) • Textbooks: Required: Atktins & de Paula “Physical Chemistry” Please note that reading material will be part of homework and relevant for exams. • Optional: James R. Barrante “Applied Mathematics for Physical Chemistry” Clicker Questions and PowerPoint Slides will be posted on the course web site! Homework Assignments This Week • Read Atkins & de Paula, “Foundations” Chapter (particularly A and B) before class on Friday, August 26 • Problem Set 1 will be posted on later today, due before class on Friday, August 26 Boyle’s Law “isotherms” (curves “at the same temperature; “iso” – the same) Robert Boyle (1627–1691) PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY: THERMODYNAMICS, STRUCTURE, AND CHANGE 10E | PETER ATKINS | JULIO DE PAULA wikipedia.org p 1 ; V V const. p or pV const. at fixed temperature T and amount of substance n wikipedia.org Boyle’s Law “isotherms” (curves “at the same temperature”; “iso” – the same) PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY: THERMODYNAMICS, STRUCTURE, AND CHANGE 10E | PETER ATKINS | JULIO DE PAULA p 1 ; V V const. p or pV const. at fixed temperature T and amount of substance n Charles’ Law (Gay-Lussac Law) “isobars” (curves “at the same pressure”; “iso” – the same) Jacques Alexandre César Charles (1746 – 1843 ) Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac (1778 – 1850 ) wikipedia.org wikipedia.org PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY: THERMODYNAMICS, STRUCTURE, AND CHANGE 10E | PETER ATKINS | JULIO DE PAULA V T; V const.
