Extending the SDI Model to Include the Marine Environment There has been increased realisation globally of the need to improve marine and coastal administration in terms of sustainable development. Marine and coastal areas are complex both as fragile and unique ecosystems, and as areas with multiple and often conflicting rights and interests. Australia is a profoundly maritime nation with 8% of our GDP coming from marine industries, and 85% of the population living within 50km of the coast. Spatial information is recognised as critical to underpin sustainable land management. Many countries are developing SDI to improve coordination and sharing of spatial information, but most of these stop at the coastline. Sustainable Development Marine administration consists of many different activities, each of which relies on access to spatial information. Currently marine spatial data is collected on a sectoral and ad-hoc basis. An identified problem in the marine and coastal environment is a lack of coordination and sharing of spatial data. As the idea of marine SDI is developing, it is often occurring as a separate initiative. The aim of this research is to develop a ‘seamless’ SDI that can be used for sharing and exchange of spatial data from marine, coastal and terrestrial environments.
