ELECTRICTY 2 NOTES Resistance / (Series and Parallel Circuits) ROADMAP of SUCCESS for the WEEK MONDAY = Resistance and how to calculate in Series and parallel circuits Tuesday = Review for SIX WEEKS TEST WED = SIX WEEKS Test Thursday = Electrical Power / Electrical energy calculations Friday = Lab (Series / parallel) circuits – (open/closed circuits) ON Friday…. On Friday we when we talked briefly about the intro to the unit…….some of the vocab that we would cover ON Friday…. On Friday we when we talked briefly about the intro to the unit…….some of the vocab that we would cover --Open Circuit / Closed --Current = Flow of electrons TODAY….we are going to learn about RESISTANCE and how to calculate it in Circuits (Series /Parallel)…and tie current to it ESSENTIAL QUESTION SO our Essential QUESTION =What is Resistance and how can it be calculated in series and parallel circuits? TEKS: Students is expected to evaluate the transfer of electrical energy in series and parallel circuits. WHOLE BRAIN Though we are taking a few Notes…..we are still doing the usual WHOLE Brain mini-lecture….. Series Circuits • Series circuits are the type of circuits that most HOLIDAY tree lights have. If one bulb goes out, all the bulbs go out. Series Circuits • Series circuits are the type of circuits that most HOLIDAY tree lights have. If one bulb goes out, all the bulbs go out. Series Circuits • Series circuits are the type of circuits that most HOLIDAY tree lights have. If one bulb goes out, all the bulbs go out. WHOLE BRAIN ---CLASS --In a second you are going to turn to your partner and tell them --What a series circuit looks like --How many paths a series circuit has --What variable is the same in series circuits --Talk about the effects of broken lights Parallel Circuits • Hmm………I see some parallel lines Parallel Circuits • If one bulb goes out…..(your tv goes out), all the other things……refrigerator, lights, and radio can still work. Parallel Circuits • If one bulb goes out…..(your tv goes out), all the other things……refrigerator, lights, and radio can still work. WHOLE BRAIN ---CLASS --In a second you are going to turn to your partner and tell them --Parallel circuits look like --What variable remains the same in parallel circuits --Talk about the effects of broken lights (if there is any effect) RESISTANCE (real world example) Think of resistance more as turbulence in a river, as water goes over the stones its motion is scrambled in many different directions and its flow is restricted. Resistance (another example) Think of a circuit as a shopping mall! Resistors are places where the electrons (people) can spend their voltage (money!) on things. Resistors are basically the same as light bulbs, except they don't use the energy for anything, they just waste it. Resistors don't slow down current or anything like that, they just are a place that voltage is turned into energy, except the energy is wasted and not used for anything. Resistance Resistance Resistance WHOLE BRAIN --Class --In a second I want you to turn to your partner and discuss --What resistance does in a circuit --What was on the REAL world examples of what resistance was like -- Unit and the Symbol RESISTANCE in Series Circuits RESISTANCE in Series Circuits RESISTANCE in Series Circuits RESISTANCE in SERIES Circuit RESISTANCE in SERIES Circuit RESISTANCE in SERIES Circuit RESISTANCE in SERIES Circuit WHOLE BRAIN --CLASS --In a second I want you to turn to your partner and discuss --What the formula for Total Resistance is in a series circuit --What math operation would we be using..(and another word for it) RESISTANCE in parallel circuits RESISTANCE in parallel circuits RESISTANCE in parallel circuits RESISTANCE in parallel circuits RESISTANCE in parallel circuits RESISTANCE in parallel circuits RESISTANCE in parallel circuits RESISTANCE in parallel circuits RESISTANCE in parallel circuits WHOLE BRAIN --CLASS --In a second I want you to turn to your partner and discuss --What the formula for Total Resistance is in a parallel circuit --What math operation would we be using? COOPERATIVE ACTIVITY TIME Ya’ll did such a good job!!!! Way to go!!!!! But we need to practice a bit more in-depth with partners -- Activity 1 (Series / Parallel circuits) --Activity 2 (Resistance calculation for Series /Parallel Circuit) Practice = higher test scores……. DEBRIEF / EXIT TICKET Friday we learned about current / open and closed circuits/ and today we learned about Resistance and SERIES / PARALLEL Circuits. BIG PICTURE = You need to know about resistance since it limits voltage which affects current (things work/don’t work) You know need to write out (your answer to the ESSESTIAL QUESTION (on AVID notes) (What is Resistance and how do you calculate it in series and parallel circuits)
