What are Plants
• Plants are living things that do not
•
•
•
•
move.
Many plants are green.
Plants usually make their own food.
Plants produce other plants like
themselves.
Plants are used by humans for food,
shelter, and drugs.

What a Plant Needs
 Water
 Air
 Light
 Soil
4
Seeds
Most plants begins with seeds.
We can eat the seeds of some
plants, such as sunflowers.
When a seed gets water and
warmth, it germinate, or start to
grow.
Parts of a seed:
– Embryo
– Seed coat
– Stored food
5
Roots
Most roots grow down into the soil.
Roots absorb water and minerals
from the soil.
Roots take nutrients for the plant.
Roots also hold the plant in place.
Carrots, beets, and potatoes are
roots we eat.
6
Stems
 Stems grow up from the roots
to hold up the plant.
 Stems carry food and water to
the rest of the plant.
 Most stems are soft, but a tree
has a hard stem called a trunk.
 Celery is a stem we eat.
7
Leaves
The leaves of the plant are
full of chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll makes the
plant green.
Chlorophyll uses soil,
sunlight, and air to make
food for the plant.
A plant can make its own
food (photosynthesis).
8
Flowers
 Flowers are important in
making seeds and fruits
through the process of
fertilization.
 Flowers have some basic
parts: female and male
parts.
 Petals attracts bees and
butterflies.
