DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY INDUSTRY AND FISHERIES Insect Monitoring www.nt.gov.au Monitoring • Refer to handouts – monitoring procedure and monitoring sheet • Learn to recognise pests and beneficials • Start monitoring at the end of the wet season - March/April • Serious pests such as mango leafhopper should be controlled before flowering starts • Monitor regularly - at weekly or fortnightly intervals • Monitor every 2-3 days during the flowering and fruiting period • Pests prefer new leaves, flowers and fruit. Concentrate monitoring on these parts of the tree DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY INDUSTRY AND FISHERIES www.nt.gov.au Benefits of monitoring • Become familiar with pest life cyles and level of damage • Observe effectiveness of beneficials • Early detection is important for effective control • Record seasonal trends • Use information to determine if control is required DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY INDUSTRY AND FISHERIES www.nt.gov.au Action levels (When is control required?) • Identify the insect - is it a pest? • For most pests - control when there is 10% infestation • For flower caterpillars control when there are 2 or more per panicle DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY INDUSTRY AND FISHERIES www.nt.gov.au Action levels To determine insect action levels survey 10-20 trees per hectare. Suggested action levels are based on trials as well as information from QDPIF. Insect Examine Action levels and comments Mango scale 5 terminals Look for live females and crawlers Immature females and crawlers are the easiest to control. Mature females are difficult to control Control when susceptible before flowering and harvest Mango leafhopper Inspect flowers and young leaves Control when you see 1 nymph or adult. Monitor and treat before start of flowering. Mango tip borer Terminals Control if 10% of terminals are infested Mango planthopper Terminals and fruit stalks Control if 10% of terminals are infested Red banded thrips Leaves Control if there are 4 colonies on 6 leaves per tree Seed weevil Examine golf ball size fruit for eggs Control when eggs present if fruit intended for export If more than 5 blemishes per fruit control hotspots Flower eating caterpillars Examine flowers, pull apart webbing look for live caterpillars Control when there are more than 2 per flower panicle Fruit spotting bugs Examine panicles and small fruit for bugs and damage Levels yet to be determined maybe 1-2 bugs per tree Fruit flies Monitor with traps and count numbers Control when numbers increase For fruit sent interstate control as per ICA requirements DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY INDUSTRY AND FISHERIES www.nt.gov.au What do you need for monitoring? • Note book or monitoring sheets (example in folder) • Pen • Secateurs and sealable plastic bags for collecting shoot samples with pests or diseases • Plastic specimen tubes • Hand lens (x10 or x20 magnification) DEPARTMENT OF PRIMARY INDUSTRY AND FISHERIES www.nt.gov.au
