LAB MAKE-UP: BIOLOGY 11B
Sanctuary Habitats: rocky shore and sandy beach:
1. Compare and contrast the shore-line (intertidal and nearshore) a rocky intertidal and
Sandy Beach. Choose a section of shoreline for each habitat type, both intertidal and
nearshore, walk it carefully, and make note of the following:
a. Compare the abiotic factors including: wave shock, substrate type, exposure to
wind and waves, habitat types. Be specific to the habitats listed
b. Compare the biotic factors focusing on: types of competetion, types of
predation, lifestyles of the organisms there, diversity of flora (plants) and fauna
(animals).
2. Spend enough time in each habitat type to make a list of flora (plants) and fauna
(animals) that you see. Look both onshore and offshore for this. Include mammals,
birds, invetebrates, fish if you see any, and plants. You’ll need to observe carefully for
this one, especially at the Sandy Beach site. Use this information to make accurate
judgements as to diversity (number of different species) differences, and the probable
causes of the differences.
3. Make some comments about the differences, compare and contrast them, and specify
why and how they are different.
Use the lab write-up format for this and include an introduction, a hypothesis, materials
and methods used, and results. BE DETAILED
