Living Things and the Environment Lesson One Chapter One Environmental Science Organism – A type of living thing. Habitat – Where an organism gets food, water, shelter, and other things it needs to live, grow, and reproduce. Biotic – “Bio” means alive. – Biotic factors are living things in an environment. What are the living things in your environment? Abiotic – “A” means without. Abiotic means non-living things. Water, Sunlight, Oxygen, Temperature, & Soil are the ABIOTIC factors. Ecosystem All the living and nonliving things in an area. Community Different species that live In the same area. Population A group of organisms that are the same species. Organism Review Questions What basic needs are provided by a Habitat? What might happen to an organism if its habitat could not meet one of its needs? Define the terms biotic and abiotic. Review Questions Look at page 11 in your book. List the Abiotic and Biotic factors. Explain why water and sunlight are 2 factors that are important to ALL living things (organisms). Review Questions Order the terms from smallest to largest: Population, Organism, Ecosystem, Community. How might a change in one population affect other populations in a community? Extra Credit Draw Your Vocabulary 1. Decide what type of ecosystem you would like – rainforest, prairie, desert, etc. 2.
