Animal Cell & Plant Cell Comparison Goal: Make observations and describe the structure and functions of organelles found in plants and animal cells. Cell Organelle Comparisons *Some of the following is only in plants. Some are only in animals. Most are in both animal and plant cells. 1. cell wall- support 2. cell membrane- door 3. vacuole- storage 4. nucleus- brain 5. mitochondria- energy 6. chromosomes- blueprints 7. cytoplasm- jellylike 8. chloroplast-food-maker 9. endoplasmic reticulum- transport 10. ribosomes- protein “ribs=meat=protein” 11. lysosome- break down “Lysol” 12. golgi bodies- package Cell Wall 1. cell wall- supports the cell and gives it its rigid shape. ONLY in Plants. This is what makes the plant stand up Cell Membrane Semi-permeable 2. cell membrane- DOOR--- This controls and regulates what enters and leaves the cell. This is BOTH plants and animal cells. Not as clear as the cell wall Vacuole 3. vacuole- storage spaces for food & water.**Large in plant cell- stores more food ,smaller in animal cell. Nucleus 4. nucleus- brain; controls the action of the cell like a computer. Chromosomes 6. chromosomes- blueprints of the cell. It contains the information about the characteristics. Chromosomes are inside the nucleus of any cell. Larger to smaller nucleus-> chromosome -> DNA Mitochondria 5. mitochondria- energy powerhouse of the cell, releases energy stored to carry out cell’s activities. Cytoplasm 7. cytoplasm- jellylike substance that holds organelles in place. Chloroplasts 8. chloroplast- foodmaker of the cell; found only in plant cells. ER 9. endoplasmic reticulumtransports things within the cell. 2 types- rough and smooth. Ribosomes 10. ribosomes- protein maker in the cell. Dots on the rough endoplasmic reticulum. 11. lysosome- breaks down (garbage collector) materials in the cell. Golgi Body 12. golgi body- packages—flat, stacked membranes---Golgi bodies sort protein and PACKAGE them Make a Connection Make a comparison of the following cell parts with a school. 1. Nucleus 2. Chromosome 3. Mitochondrion 4. Ribosome 5. Vacuole 6. Endoplasmic reticulum 7. cell membrane Animal Cell Nucleus Chromosomes Mitochondrion Ribosome Vacuoles Endoplasmic reticulum Cell membrane School Principal’s Office Books Electricity Cafeteria Lockers School bus Door of school Word bank for quiz **Some are used more than once 1. lysosome 2. nucleus 3.
