I. What is Inside a Cell?
A. What are cells?
1. Basic unit of all living things
a. Single cell = one cell
b. multicelluar = many cells
2. too small to see with your eyes
B. Functions of cells
1. Cells MUST
a. take in food & get rid of waste
2. use cellular respiration- oxygen and food
make energy in mitochondria
C. The parts of cells
1. Animal cells- 5 parts
a. Cell membrane- surrounds the cellholds it together
b. Nucleus- Control Center
c. Vacuole- acts like a stomach- stores
water in plants
d. Cytoplasm- all the material between
the cell membrane and the nucleus
e. Mitochondria- power producerscombine oxygen and food to produce
energy
D. Plant Cells – 7 parts
1. Have all 5 parts that an animal cell has
plus:
a. Cell Wall- surrounds the cell
membrane; gives extra support
b. Chloroplast- uses energy in sunlight
to turn water and CO2 into
O2 and sugar. It also gives plants
their green color
