Pitch
• The pitch of a note is
how high or how low it
sounds
• Pitch is directly
related to the
frequency of the note
ie a 200HZ note is low
as opposed to an
880HZ note
• Each note is a
different frequency
• Such as 440HZ is A3
(third octave on the
keyboard A)
Duration
• How long a certain note
lasts
• In common time (4/4)
• A quarter note gets 1
full beat, an eighth
note gets ½ beat, a half
note gets 2 beats, and a
whole note gets 4 full
beats. Duration
changes between time
signatures

The dynamic markings of a piece
of music effect how loud or soft the
music is supposed to be played.
The most common dynamic
markings are…

Timbre (tone color)
• Timbre is not the pitch
itself but how it sounds.
• Such as whether it
sounds dark, or bright.

(which is playing in the
background)
• While a Bach Fugue Will
sound brighter

Rhythm and meter
• Rhythm is how the
quarter, eighth, half, and
whole notes are
arranged throughout a
piece of music.
• Meter is the time
signature of a piece i.e.
4/4 (common time)
which means 4 beats for
every measure and the
quarter note gets the
beat.
Melody
• Melody is the main
line of a piece of
music.
• Melody is usually, but
not always the part
that moves throughout
the scale the most.
Harmony
• Harmony is the
background behind the
melody.
• Harmony usually
covers all the chord
progressions
throughout the piece
Texture
• Texture is the way the
music is arranged
• Sometimes its how
many parts or how
little parts.
• For example there is
monophony which is
one part… and there is
polyphony which is
multiple parts.
Binary Form
• Binary form is shown as
“AB”
• What this means is that
there are two (Bi) themes
in a specific piece of
music. The A theme
being first followed by
the B theme.

Ternary Form
• Ternary form is shown
as “ABA” no not the
group ABBA that’s two
B’s
• What this means is that
there are three (ter)
themes in a specific piece
of music. But one of the
themes is repeated twice.
The A theme being the
first is followed by the B
theme and then it goes
back to the A theme

• The four voice parts
consist of Two Guy parts
and Two Girl parts
• The two guy parts are
Bass and Tenor which
are read on the Bass Clef
• The two girl parts are
Alto and Soprano which
are read on the Treble

• The Five Brass

• Stringed Instruments
Consist of Many
Types.
• The Bowed Types
which are Violin,
Viola, Cello, and Bass
• The Plucked Types,
Guitar, Banjo,
Mandolin, and Bass
(just to name a few)
Percussion Instruments
• There are two different
types of Percussion
Instruments.
• Pitched Percussion
(Marimbas, Vibraphone,
Xylophone, Timpani
etc..)
• Non Pitched Percussion
(Snare Drum, Bass
Drum, Tambourine,
Cymbal etc…)
The Piano
• There is Only one piano
• A piano is combination
of stringed and
percussion instruments
• The inside of a piano has
strings like that of a
guitar which are hit with
small felt hammers to
make a sound.
• A piano has 88 keys
which differ between
black(being sharps or
flats) and white(being
natural).
