By: Will Lindberg the music GENIUS!!! Pitch • The pitch of a note is how high or how low it sounds • Pitch is directly related to the frequency of the note ie a 200HZ note is low as opposed to an 880HZ note • Each note is a different frequency • Such as 440HZ is A3 (third octave on the keyboard A) Duration • How long a certain note lasts • In common time (4/4) • A quarter note gets 1 full beat, an eighth note gets ½ beat, a half note gets 2 beats, and a whole note gets 4 full beats. Duration changes between time signatures THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF VOLUME (or in musical terms Dynamics) • The dynamic markings of a piece of music effect how loud or soft the music is supposed to be played. The most common dynamic markings are… p p p (Pianississimo, very very soft) p p (Pianissimo, very soft) p. (Piano. soft) m p (Mezzo Piano, medium soft) m f (Mezzo Forte, medium loud) f. (Forte, loud) f f (Fortissimo, very loud) f f f (Fortississimo, very very loud) Timbre (tone color) • Timbre is not the pitch itself but how it sounds. • Such as whether it sounds dark, or bright. • A melody from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata sounds dark (which is playing in the background) • While a Bach Fugue Will sound brighter Timbre (tone color) • Timbre is not the pitch itself but how it sounds. • Such as whether it sounds dark, or bright. • A melody from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata sounds dark (which is playing in the background) • While a Bach Fugue Will sound brighter Rhythm and meter • Rhythm is how the quarter, eighth, half, and whole notes are arranged throughout a piece of music. • Meter is the time signature of a piece i.e. 4/4 (common time) which means 4 beats for every measure and the quarter note gets the beat. Melody • Melody is the main line of a piece of music. • Melody is usually, but not always the part that moves throughout the scale the most. Harmony • Harmony is the background behind the melody. • Harmony usually covers all the chord progressions throughout the piece Texture • Texture is the way the music is arranged • Sometimes its how many parts or how little parts. • For example there is monophony which is one part… and there is polyphony which is multiple parts. Binary Form • Binary form is shown as “AB” • What this means is that there are two (Bi) themes in a specific piece of music. The A theme being first followed by the B theme. • He enjoys playin Binary form on his Accordion Ternary Form • Ternary form is shown as “ABA” no not the group ABBA that’s two B’s • What this means is that there are three (ter) themes in a specific piece of music. But one of the themes is repeated twice. The A theme being the first is followed by the B theme and then it goes back to the A theme • He likes Ternary Form and Tax Evasion The four voice parts • The four voice parts consist of Two Guy parts and Two Girl parts • The two guy parts are Bass and Tenor which are read on the Bass Clef • The two girl parts are Alto and Soprano which are read on the Treble Clef • Look SATB they are lovely people Brass Instruments • The Five Brass Instruments are… • TRUMPETS!! • FRENCH HORNS!! • TROMBONES!! • BARITONES!! • And…………….. • TUBAS!! • The Baritone is missing but it is basically a smaller Tuba Woodwind Instruments • The Five Woodwind Instruments are… • FLUTES!!! • CLARINETS!!! • OBOES!!! • BASSOONS!!! • And……………… • SAXOPHONES!!!
