The Career That Most Interests My Client By: Connor Schaible Based on Choices… • Based on Choices my top 2 interests follow artistic, and realistic • The 2 careers I will be discussing are following the music performance, general, and music theory/composition pathways. This is because my client is artistic and loves music • The jobs are a musician and a music composer Artistic and Realistic • Artistic • If you are artistic then you are considered a “creator” • You like many types of art including drama, music, and literature • Realistic • If you are realistic you are considered a “doer” • You like “hands-on” activities and enjoy working with machinery Musician • Job Description- Musicians play one or more • • • • • instruments or entertain by singing or performing in recital Salary- Musicians are paid up to $120 - $250 per service (3 hours of work) Level of Education- Some need a bachelors degree or a higher master’s or doctoral degree for teaching Specific Aptitudes/Physical Demands- Smoke and odors may be present, and lighting and ventilation may be inadequate in many places that a musician performs at. Specialties Within the Field- Musicians can play a musical instrument in an orchestra, band, rock group, or jazz group. Some play a variety of instruments or even sing Employment Outlook- An average of about 274,000 people in the U.S.A are musicians Music Composer • Job Description- Conduct, direct, plan, and lead instrumental or • • • • vocal performances by musical groups such as orchestras, choirs, and glee clubs Salary- Music composers can earn around $20,000 – $60,000 in a year Level of Education- Training is required also a masters degree Specialties within the Field- Composers may work alone as part of a symphony company. Also they may collaborate with other musicians, vocalists, songwriters or lyricists. They also work with every music genre and a variety of musical instruments. National Employment Outlook- 60,000 workers in 2004 were music composers. • Specific Aptitudes • General Learning Ability- Your ability to catch on and understand • • Verbal Aptitude- Your ability to understand and use words Clerical Perception- your ability to check numbers and words new things quickly to spot mistakes Selection • Musician • Pros • Musicians make pretty good money. Also you get the experience of performing in front of an audience • Cons • Although you would have to spend long hours of rehearsing and practicing for performances. Also a lot of the performances are late at night so you will get very exhausted. Selection Continued… • Music Director • Pros • It would be great to do all of your work at home. Also composing music would be a good way to express yourself. You can also earn a good amount of money. • Cons • It would be very frustrating if you have a slow computer and you have to type a lot of stuff everyday. Also if your late with turning in a piece of music to the company you typed it for then they probably wont accept it. Decision • Based on all the information my client would probably like to be a musician rather than a music composer. This is because he already knows how to play an instrument and would like to take it to the next level and play in front of an audience. Also he thinks that a musician gets paid well.
