www.hoax-slayer.com www.earthdayenergyfast.org By: John D. Mr. Triplett’s Class 4th Grade www.pt.inmagine.com THE PLANETS There are 8 planets. There used to be nine, but Pluto is not a planet anymore. Here they are, in order from the Sun. Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune CAN YOU GUESS WHAT THE PLANETS ARE AS THEY ARE We will be looking at Mars a little SPINNING? closer! Note: Planets are not sized to scale or distance! http://pds.jpl.nasa.gov/planets/ http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/bobalien99/marsmoon.htm (All Images) MARS Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. It is nicknamed the “Red Planet” because of all the iron oxide in it’s rocks and soil. Mars has two moons: Phobos and Deimos. Both Phobos and Deimos are smaller than Earth’s moon. Neither are round like most other moons are. MARS FACTS • The weight of a person who is 100 lbs. on Earth would be 38 lbs. on Mars! • The length of a day is 24.6 hours, compared to Earth’s 24 hours. • The length of a year is 687 days-almost double that of Earth’s year which is 365 days! • The diameter of Mars is 4,222 miles-much smaller than Earth’s 7, 926 miles. • Probes sent to Mars have sent scientists much information about Mars. They think Mars may have once had water, just like Earth! Mars Sunrise http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/bobalien99/marsmoon.htm (All Images) MARS FROM EARTH • Mars is the brightest object in the night sky. • The best time to see Mars is on a clear morning in the Eastern sky. • It will look like a bright star with a reddish tint to it. • You can see it with your eyes, but if you use a small telescope, you can make out the polar ice caps! CONSTELLATIONS There are 88 constellations. But, most of these are not visible without a telescope. A constellation is a group of stars visible within a particular region of the night sky. Some were named after animals and some mythological characters. Some constellations were named after some scientific instruments . Seven stars make up “The Big Dipper”, part of the Ursa Major constellation. http://library.thinkquest.org/3645/telescope/big_dipper.html Click HERE to make your own Star Finder! SPACE EXPLORATION http://nix.ksc.nasa.gov/search;jsessionid=2k7ogo3wjskoc People have been looking at the sky for ages. Famous astronomers Galileo and Copernicus were the first people to believe that the Earth revolved around the Sun! Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the Moon! Who will be the next person to make history in space exploration? Maybe you! Click HERE to listen to Neil Armstrong on the moon! http://tools.wikimedia.de/~gmaxwell/jorbis/JOrbisPlayer.php?path=Frase+de+Neil+Armstrong.ogg&wiki=en WHAT OTHER DISCOVERIES WILL WE MAKE? There are lots of other things out there that they think might be planets. One of them is called 2003 UB313. They don’t even have a name for it yet. There are lots of other things out there to. I think as we get better technology there will be more planets discovered because the Solar System is so big! WORKS CITED 8 July 2007 <http://library.thinkquest.org/5135/constellations.htm#CF>.
