Other Heavenly Bodies What is a Heavenly Body? Anything in the heavens other than our planets These Heavenly Bodies include, but are not limited to: Pluto Comets Asteroids Meteoroids Pluto Rocky “terrestrial” composition Approximately 39 AUs from the Sun One moon, Charon No rings Counter-clockwise rotation around Sun Now referred to as a “dwarf” planet because it is so small and does not clear its own path for orbit Comets Small objects made mainly of ice with bits of rock and metal Usually have very long, elliptical orbits Asteroids Too small and too numerous to be considered fullfledged planets. Most revolve around the sun between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. (the asteroid belt) Meteoroids A chunk of rock or dust in space Usually come from comets or asteroids A meteor is the streak of light we see in the sky due to friction when a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere (shooting star). When a meteoroid passes through the atmosphere and hits Earth’s surface, it is called a meteorite.
