What is the
definition of energy
and unit it is
measured in?
Energy is the
ability to do work,
measured in
Joules.
What is constructive and
destructive interference in
relationship to waves being in
and out of phase.
Constructive- in phase, waves
add
Destructive- out of phase and
waves cancel
What are the
names of 2
different types of
Potential Energy
Gravitational
Potential energy
And Elastic
potential energy
What are the 5
forms energy can
be found in?
1.
Chemical
2.
3.
Mechanical
4.
5.
Nuclear
Heat
Electromagnetic
What is the
Doppler Effect and
describe its effect
on light and sound.
Doppler Effect- change in frequency as
waves travel towards/away
Light- Blue:towards; Red: away
Sound- High pitch: towards;
Low pitch: away
What is the difference between
harmonic and linear motion and give
an example of each.
Harmonic motion is repeating- like a swing going
back and forth, or like Dr. B in class saying the
same things over, and over, and over again.
Linear motion does not repeat, like walking home
from a concert after the taxi never showed up
Direct or Inverse???
What is the relationship between
- frequency and wavelength
- wavelength and period
- period and frequency
- frequency and wavelength: inverse
- wavelength and period: direct
- period and frequency: inverse
Draw a wave and label:
Crest, trough, amplitude, and
wavelength
What is the difference between
mechanical and electromagnetic
waves and give an example of each.
Mechanical- requires a medium (sound)
Electromagnetic- no medium required
(light)
When singing in the shower, Dr. B hit a note
that cracked her bathroom mirror. What is
the name of this phenomena and describe in
detail how it works.
In your description discuss how sound
waves travel (transverse/longitudinalcompressional/mechanical/electromagnetic/)
and how they interact
(constructive/destructive interference).
This phenomena is called resonance.
Sound waves are mechanical (require medium) and
longitudinal/compressional (wave travels in the
same direction as motion).
When the frequency of the pitch of Dr. B’s amazing
operatics equals the natural frequency of the glass,
constructive interference happens and the
amplitudes increases so much that the mirror
breaks.
What is the
difference between
a star and a
planet?
Stars undergo
nuclear fusion and
planets do not.
Direct or Inverse??
What is the relationship between
-
Gravity and mass
-
Mass and Lifespan
Gravity and massdirect
Mass and lifespaninverse
If a white dwarf and a neutron
star got into a confrontation,
who have more pull on the
other? Describe why.
Neutron star
because it is more
dense and more
mass, more
gravitational pull.
What is more
luminous, a Blue
supergiant or a
Red giant?
Explain.
Blue supergiant. Luminosity is
brightness. Blue light is a higher
frequency (more energy) and brighter
than red light.
When black holes engulf
objects, X-rays get emitted.
Explain why this would
make sense using E=mc2 and
the law of conservation of
mass/energy.
The law of conservation of … states that energy/mass cannot
be created nor destroyed but can only change forms.
Einstein’s equation E=mc2 states that energy and matter
can be converted into each other as well.
So when matter gets sucked into a black hole, the intensity
of the pressure can change mass into energy, which is being
emitted.
What is the name
of the crust and
outer mantle
combined?
lithosphere
What is the name of the circular
motion of the fluid that moves the
plates and where is it located in the
Earth’s structure (one word)?
Convection
currents in the
Asthenosphere
What are the
layers of the Earth
and their
respective states of
matter?
Inner core- solid
Outer core- liquid
Inner mantle- liquid
Outer mantle- solid
Crust- solid
What kind of boundary causes mountains,
trenches, and volcanos and specify the
nature of each.
Convergent boundaries of:
Continent- continent- mountains
Continent- ocean- volcano
Ocean- ocean- trench
What are the 3 types of
boundaries and what
tectonic feature/movement
does it produce?
Transform- earthquake
Divergent- valley
Convergent- mountains/volcano/trench
What word does Dr. B use (repeated
harmonicly) to indicate that you should
kindly put away your computers?
Rid, rid, rid….
Fill in the blank:
Despite it all, to me she was beautiful still, but that beauty
had faded, glowing like a _______ _________who had
reached almost the end of her life, like a dying white rose
past its prime.”
White dwarf
What uses more gass, a honda civic or a hummer
and what does this have to do with the universe?
A hummer.
Because bigger
stars use a lot more
fuel (and therefore
have shorter lives).
Why are some of
you like a black
hole?
Because the information goes in but never comes
out. Where it goes is a mystery.
What is not matter,
but does matter?
Energy
Make your wager
What is the
strongest force in
the universe?
Love.
