Rat Dissection Scientific Name: Rattus norvegicus Common Name: Rat Kingdom- Animalia Phylum- Chordata Subphylum- Vertebrata Class- Mammalia Order- Rodentia RATS Rat Dissection Before cutting you will need to carefully examine & describe each of the following: Eyes Whiskers Nostrils Mouth/Teeth/Tongue Feet/Nails Tail Before moving on, determine if your rat is male or female and have your teacher verify this. Rat Dissection REMOVING SKIN It is helpful to use the forceps and scissors to remove the skin. Source #4 Rat Dissection Do not cut too deep. You only want to remove the skin from the muscle. If you cut too deep you will cut through the muscle and into the abdominal and thoracic cavities. You will see a thick brown liquid if you cut too deep.
