Enhanced Services Live Events
Details of the live events required for accreditation for Enhanced Services (EHC &
Stop Smoking Level 3) are available in this programme on pages 17 and 18. We are
not able to hold these events across Wales every term and operate a rotating system
to ensure we cover all areas every year.
To assist with your planning, we have detailed below the Enhanced Services
programme for 2014.

Video Conference
Recording
This term we will be recording
all our video conferences and
making the recordings available
on our website. This will enable
those who were not able to get
to the event to view a recording
of the evening. This is not
meant to replace attendance at
a live event but it does ensure
that you won’t miss out on a
CPD opportunity even if you
can’t make the date!

We would also like to take this opportunity
to thank Cath whose energy, insights and
enthusiasm have brought a transforming
effect to WCPPE. We wish her well in her
new appointment as Director of Welsh Blood
Service.
Margaret has a long association with WCPPE,
latterly working very closely with Cath as
Deputy Director. Margaret’s experience of
WCPPE activity, her expertise in pharmacy
training and education and her detailed

Online Seminars
In 2014 we will begin piloting a new way
of providing some CPD events to expand
the delivery of learning material and
facilitate discussions between pharmacists
and technicians in Wales. To do this we
are currently developing online seminars
(webinars) which allow real time learning
between a tutor/speaker and participants over
Events & Learning Programme Spring 2014
the internet. This will allow a fully interactive
way of delivering some of our CPD material.
Watch our website for further developments
as the pilot progresses. Please let us know if
you would be interested in being involved in
the pilot by emailing the office on
[email protected].
Enhanced Services
National Accreditation
Accreditation for enhanced services is via online
assessment. The accreditation is not health board
specific and covers delivery of these services across
Wales. It is valid for three years.
The assessment, a competency and training framework,
learning material and supporting documents can be
found on WCPPEonline at www.wcppe.org.uk and
are accessed via the orange ‘Assessment’ tab. The
distance learning packs are available either through the
‘resources’ link on the assessment page or to download
or order online via the red ‘Learning’ tab.
Re-accreditation
Please note that the EHC and Stop Smoking (Level 3)
re-accreditation assessments are now available on the
WCPPE website.
The re-accreditation requirement for other enhanced
services is currently in development and full details will
be available on the WCPPE website shortly.
There is no fee for the re-accreditation assessment.
Please check whether your health board is running the
service you are obtaining accreditation for.
To undertake the assessments you have to be registered
for WCPPEonline.
A fee of £25 is payable for the enhanced service
assessment process and can be paid online (or over the
phone) using a debit or credit card. Once payment is
received and you have completed the assessment it will
be marked (please allow up to 10 working days for this).
The fee will cover up to two attempts for one service
assessment.

A-Z of Learning Resources
ABCD
WCPPE provides a wide range of learning resources in a
variety of formats to suit different learning styles.
Distance Learning Packs (DLPs)
This style of programme allows you to work at your own
pace, when it is convenient to you and uses exercises
/ case studies to help you to develop your knowledge.
There are packs available in a wide range of therapeutic
topics, as well as several to support the community
pharmacy contract.
DLPs can either be downloaded from our website or, in
some cases, you can request a hard copy to be sent to
you. Please note we can only supply a maximum of two
DLPs in hard copy at any one time and cannot supply
additional DLPs until the online post course quiz has been
completed. There is no limit on the number of online
packs you can access.
An online post course quiz is available for each distance
learning pack (whether you have downloaded it or ordered
a hard copy) for you to test your learning. You can access
the quiz through your myWCPPE page. Once you have
completed the quiz, a certificate will then be available for
you to download.
Full details of all DLPs including an overview of each pack
and learning objectives are available on our website www.
wcppe.org.uk. All our DLPs can now be accessed or
ordered online.
e-Learning
We provide a range of technology enhanced resources
which are accessible via the website. These resources
range in format and style, but provide an easily accessible
and convenient learning format. We are constantly
expanding this range.
A full list of all our resources (by subject area) and the
formats that they are available in are listed in the table
opposite.

Why book?
It is important that you book prior to attending an event,

Cancelling a booking
6. You will receive a confirmation email
If you have booked onto an event and then are unable to

2. Click on the pink ‘Learning’ tab on the
top navigation bar
3. Click on ‘Distance Learning Packs’ in either the left
hand navigation bar or the Distance Learning Pack
box
4. Select the pack
5. You now have two options:
a. Access the booklet and questions online
b. Order a hard copy of the booklet with online
access to the questions (this also provides online
access to the booklet)

Events & Learning Programme Spring 2014
Failure to cancel your place before midday the day
before the course will result in a £25.00 charge.
This charge is a contribution towards the cost of the
course place.
If WCPPE has to cancel an event, we will attempt to
notify all participants who have booked onto the event,
by telephone, email or in writing, as well as posting a
cancellation notice on our website. We would therefore
advise you to check our website regularly and ensure that
we have your correct contact details.

Medication Misuse – Over-the–Counter (OTC) and Prescribed
Overview:
As healthcare professionals, we encounter patients who are addicted to and /or misuse prescription
and OTC medicines in our everyday practice. Approximately 30% of adults in the UK will have used illicit
drugs at some point in their lives with abuse of prescription drugs becoming more widespread.
This course will consider how to recognise key risk factors, triggers for patients and how we can help
prevent these medicines from being misused. It will help develop effective communication skills in
encouraging patients to divulge information and the fact they are addicted to medicines. It will provide
information for you to signpost patients to the most appropriate services and recognise treatment
interventions that can be used. This course will not look specifically at addiction to illicit substances but
the skills can be used for all patients.

Skin Cancer Protection and Detection
Overview:
Skin cancer, which overall is a preventable disease, is one of the most common forms of cancer in the
UK. Since the 1980’s the incidence has almost tripled and damage to the skin when children are young
contributes to increased risk later in life. A recent UK wide poll by Macmillan cancer support reported
that in order to achieve a “deeper tan”, 40% of people burn their skin on purpose. This is despite the fact
that “just one episode of painful sunburn every 2 years triples the risk of developing melanoma”.
Tackling cancer is one of the Welsh Assembly Governments top priorities and by supporting ongoing
Public Health Wales campaigns as well as providing key effective advice, pharmacists and their pharmacy
teams can make a significant contribution to help prevent this type of cancer.

‘Restricting pharmacist numbers will ensure quality for
patients and the profession’
Overview:
RPS and WCPPE are holding a joint professional debate to explore the above issue. The event will provide
an opportunity to discuss the oversupply of pharmacists and highlight the options to ensure a bright
professional future for pharmacists in Wales.
The number of pharmacists entering the profession in the last ten years has more than doubled as new pharmacy
schools have opened and established schools have expanded the size of their annual intakes. This is all set against
a backdrop of budgetary constraints within the workplace. The complexity of the issue and management options are
currently being explored but are there risks inherent in allowing market forces to prevail or is restricting pharmacy student
numbers the best way forward to protect current members of the profession and our patients?

Diabetes – Devices, Monitoring and Complications
Overview:
Diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges facing the UK today. The number of people with diabetes is
soaring and it’s estimated that by 2025 this number will be 5 million.
Patients often have little understanding about the seriousness of the disease, its monitoring and how to
manage the wide range of complications. As well as this, the range of insulin and insulin analogue devices
available is increasing and can be confusing for patients.
It’s therefore vital that healthcare professionals have a good understanding and are confident in advising
patients in these areas.
This course will provide pharmacy technicians with the knowledge and skills to provide appropriate support
