EENG412/INFE320 Lab Work V Ethernet Cross Cable Communication under Windows Figure 2: 'Straight Through' cable use Figure 1: Crossover cable use Equipments: Two PCs with Windows XP operating systems, and Ethernet cross-cable. Exercises 1: 1. To connect two computers using Ethernet cross-cable without using a hub, switch, or existing network. Connect both ends of the crossover cable to the network card of the computers, then turn both computers on. 2. Click 'My Computer', with the right mouse button, click on 'Properties'. Click on the 'Computer Name' tab. Observe the Workgroup name listed on computer 1&2 (MYHOME). Both computers should have the same workgroup. Computer name & workgroup can be changed by clicking on the 'Change...' button. Type the desired Workgroup name & computer name and click on 'OK' button. A message box appears: 'You must restart your computer before the new settings will take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?'. Click on the 'Yes' button. 1 EENG412/INFE320 Lab Work V Enable 'Sharing Folder: 3. Click right mouse button on ‘Shared Documents’, (or whichever hard disk drive you want to be able to exchange files with). With the left mouse button, click on 'Sharing and Security...'. With the left mouse button, click on the link 'If you understand the risk but still want to share the root of the drive, click here.'. 4. With the left mouse button, click on the link 'If you understand the security risks but want to share files without running the wizard, click here.'. Select 'Just enable file sharing',. With the left mouse button, click on the 'OK' button. 5. With the left mouse button, click on the check box next to 'Share this folder on the network'. The hard disk drive name will appear in the 'Share name' text box as the default 'Share name' (You can rename it or accept the default name). With the left mouse button, click on the check box next to 'Allow network users to change my files'. This will allow you full access to the drive and its files. Click on the 'OK' button. 2 EENG412/INFE320 Lab Work V 6. Open the 'My Network Places'. Under 'Network Tasks' on the left side of the screen, click on 'View workgroup computers'. With the left mouse button, click on one of the computers to view the shared folders. Now both computer show up on the other computers, unless firewall is preventing them from showing up. If you do not see your computers, then either configure your firewall to allow file sharing between them or temporarily shut the firewall down. Exercises 2: 1. Go to the Internet, to find out more about the Ethernet Cross Cable, and answer all the following questions. Questions: 1. What is Ethernet? 2. What is a LAN (local area network)? 3.
