Shannon Scott, Graduate Program Coordinator September 2, 2014 Our New Graduate Students Blake Woolsey, trumpet, is interested in all styles of trumpet performance, trumpet and general music teaching methods, arranging, composing, theory and analysis. His undergraduate degree is a BM in Music Performance, University of Wyoming, where he was Principal Trumpet of University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, Lead Trumpet in the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble, invited to play Lead Trumpet in the Wyoming Jazz Educator’s Big Band; My transcription of Brahms’ Symphony 4 in E minor: I for Saxophone Ensemble was premiered by the University of Wyoming Saxophone Ensemble in Fall 2013. Blake enjoys family and friends, roasting coffee, baking bread and cooking, and learning new things all the time. Hanae Straub is a 5 year Masters Program student at WSU. She is working towards a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Music Education and hopes to teach elementary music. Hanae is a soprano vocalist Hi! Graduate Program Coordinator September 2014 Brian Ploeger was a member of the music faculty at Spokane Falls Community College, teaching Improvisation and Private Trumpet and directing a Jazz Combo. He was also a member of the music faculty at Whitworth College. Ploeger toured internationally as a featured soloist with Maynard Ferguson's Big Bop Nouveau Band and the Glenn Miller Orchestra and has recorded with Michael Feinstein and Maynard Ferguson. He then studied at Whitworth University and earned his degree in music education. As a music teacher he worked in secondary schools. Today he is the conductor of the concert bands at the "Evergreen Middle School" in Spokane Valley in Washington. Since May 2009 he has been conductor of the "Spokane Jazz Orchestra". He also works as a teacher for jazz arrangement at the Eastern Washington University in Cheney. As a trombonist, he worked in the jazz sextet "Kind of Blue", the "Tom Molter Big Band" and "Spokane Jazz Orchestra". He was also active as a trombonist who played in orchestras on ships for Carnival and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. As a composer he writes works for concert band and jazz ensembles. Lindsay Martin is a composer with piano as my primary instrument. I enjoy jazz, music history, music literature: I want to expand this knowledge when I’m here, music theory, and stringed instruments particularly the viola or violin. My undergraduate school is Eastern Oregon University 20092010, senior year of high school I primarily focused on ensembles and piano lessons: Eastern Oregon University 2010-2014, when I acquired my degree. During 2008-2014 I taught over 50 piano students and set up my own private studio to teach them in 2010. During 2012-2014 I did various small jobs including collaborating with a high school choir for their concert and substitute teaching for one of my professors. In 2010 I won a regional piano competition hosted by Eastern Oregon University, put on by the local chapter of OMTA. I enjoy spending time with my family and with my fiancé, running, hiking, camping, and traveling. 2 Ka Yat Ngai enters with an emphasis on composition; he is a pianist. His research and teaching interests are solo piano, chamber and orchestral composition and teaching piano. Ka Yat started piano lesson at the age of 16, and earned the BA in Music Composition at WSU. He was a winner in LUCO’s 20th Anniversary Fanfare Competition (2014). Outside of work, Ka Yat enjoys dining with his parents and friends; running and reading; archaeological and religious studies. Hello! My name is Zachery Meier and I am a Graduate Teaching Assistant with concentration in composition and flute as my primary instrument. I am originally from the southern part of Minnesota and moved to Duluth, MN in 2010 to receive my bachelors degree in music theory and composition from the University of Minnesota Duluth. I have played principal positions in the university’s orchestra and wind ensemble, along with the community’s North Shore Symphony Orchestra. Recently, I completed paperwork to publish my first piece for solo bassoon titled “In a Dream” with Trevco Music Publishing Company. I look forward to collaborating with many students and faculty at WSU and to learn so much more
