BIOGRAPHY
In 2010 Mark Buys returned to Australia from Los Angeles after spending 3 years
working in several of the most illustrious film scoring studios in the world. Credit
highlights while working at Ilsley Music (Christopher Young) and Remote Control
Productions (Hans Zimmer) include: The Uninvited, Love Happens, Drag Me to Hell,
The Little Engine That Could, Dorothy of Oz and Epic Mickey.
Mark’s original music is showcased in the Australian productions, The Line, Shadows
of the Past, Sneezing Baby Panda: The Movie and How to Lose Jobs & Alienate
Girlfriends; and demand for his musical expertise has lead him work on projects
ranging from feature films to music theatre in Australasia, America and Europe.
Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Mark studied music at the Victorian College of
the Arts (VCA) where he was the recipient of an Australian Postgraduate Award to
complete his Masters in Music. During this time, Mark completed a thesis on the film
music of William Hamilton Webber, a prominent Australian film composer of the
1930s. Mark also premiered two hours of chamber and symphonic music, which he
was invited to conduct by the VCA Symphony Orchestra.
Known not only for his original compositions, Mark arranged and orchestrated music
for the Festival of Broadway: Stephen Schwartz, performed in New York, Toronto,
Sydney and Hobart; and received an honorable mention from the 2014 New York
Music Theatre Festival for his orchestrations on The Mapmakers Opera.
In addition to Mark’s work as a composer, he also has a strong commitment to the
training of young musicians and composers. Previously, as Associate Lecturer in
Music Technology, he reestablished this department for the University of Tasmania.
He has twice been invited to guest lecturer in film music at Australian International
Symphony Orchestra Institute, and
is currently a guest lecturer at the Victorian
College of the Arts in Interactive Composition.
