SUBSPECIALTY INTEREST IN VITREORETINA
Pre-fellowship experience (2000-2006)
My interest in vitreoretinal diseases and in vitreoretinal surgery in particular stems from
the extensive and intensive exposure I received during my specialist training at Universiti
Kebangsaan Malaysia. I was a medical officer during the course of specialty rotations and
I served as registrar with the vitreoretinal team and specialist in-charge of the
vitreoretinal services during the period when there was only a visiting consultancy. I was
accustomed to assisting in the operating theatre and I was familiar with the rigours of the
trade. Furthermore, the service at our unit, a major teaching unit for Ophthalmology in
the country faced an uncertain future. This only served to fuel my interest and
commitment to make this my sub-specialty and to upgrade the service in this area to
serve the nation.
CLINICAL FELLOW IN VITREORETINAL SURGERY
My fellowship began with being the sole/ preferred assistant of Dr Barkeh Hanim Jumaat,
a visiting vitreoretinal surgeon who trained at the Melbourne Eye and Ear Hospital now
in private practice, from 2005-2006. I also assisted Associate Professors Dr Ahmad Fauzi
and Dr Angela Loo at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre in the vitreoretinal theatre and
clinic in 2006.
Then I spent one year sponsored by UKM under the tutelage and supervision of Associate
Professor Dr Lim Tock Han, Dr Lee Jong Jian (Jan-Feb 2007), Dr Zaw Minn-Din, Dr
Nikolle Tan and Dr Steven Teoh Charn Beng in 2007 at Vitreo-retinal surgery,
Department of Ophthalmology, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore for a total period of
one year. During that time I was exposed to the various practices of the surgeons who had
trained in Singapore, United States, England and Australia. I was given opportunity to
perform various vitreoretinal procedures and surgeries under their supervision and gained
immense confidence and experience in the management of these conditions. This enabled
me to return and successfully conduct the vitreoretinal services at PPUKM singlehandedly. I am still learning and in contact with my mentors to consult on unusual cases.
