DAPA Productions in association with Epsom Playhouse present
DAPA PRODUCTIONS is the production arm of Dorking Academy of Performing Arts, a parttime performing arts school for children and adults which has been established in Dorking
since 2001, and more recently in Horsham and East Grinstead. DAPA has staged a variety of
shows including:

DAPA Productions exists to extend and expand the performance opportunities offered to children
and adults in Surrey and Sussex. The aim of DAPA is to produce musicals which are performed to
the highest standard in local professional venues with any profits from performances going
towards subsequent productions.
Our next production will be Sweet Charity here at Espom Playhouse on the
10th-12th January 2008.

Alex has been with DAPA for
the past four years, during
which time he has performed
the roles of Dandy Dan (Bugsy
Malone), Billy (Billy), Arthur
(Pendragon), Valjean (Les
Misérables)
and
Rico
(Copacabana). Alex’s future
plans involve further training at one of the
London Drama Schools.
Lydia Marcazzo – Maria
Lydia is 15 years old and
attends Reigate School where
she is studying GSCE Drama.
Last year she played Rizzo in
Grease for the school production. At DAPA she has been
part of Les Misérables and also
in Copacabana, playing Gladys.
Her ambition is to continue singing and one
day take part in a West End show.

Luke Brady – Bernardo
Louise Trigg – Anybodys
Luke has been with DAPA for
nearly four years and has been
involved in many productions.
Credits include – The Wizard
(The Wiz), Merlin (Pendragon),
Edward (Blood Brothers),
Marius (Les Misérables) and
Tony (Copacabana).
Louise has just completed a
National Diploma in Performing
Arts, graduating at triple
Distinction level. She hopes to
progress onto an acting degree
at an accredited drama school
in the near future. Past
productions include: Judy in
Too Much Punch For Judy, Blue in
Connections, Glimmer in The Black Remote,
Linda in Blood Brothers, Juliet in Romeo &
Juliet and Guinevere in Pendragon.
In September Luke starts a full time two year
performing Arts course at Hurtwood House.
Rebecca Blake – Anita
Rebecca is from the U.S.A. and
has now been performing with
DAPA for the past two years.
She made her first U.K.
appearance in their production
of Les Misérables (2006). Some
of her other roles have been
Jane (Salad Days), Narrator
(Blood Brothers), Lucifer (A Deal with the
Devil), and Truvy (Steel Magnolias). Rebecca
will attend the University of Leeds this
September to read Theatre and Performance
Studies, after which she hopes to pursue a
career in Theatre.
Neil Mayall – Lt. Shrank
Harry McEntire – Riff
Harry has performed many
times with DAPA, playing parts
such as Enjolras in Les
Misérables,
Arthur
in
Pendragon and Mickey in
Blood Brothers. Harry recently
performed as Chiron in the
critically acclaimed DDOS
production of Titus Andronicus. He sings for
‘The Black Tie Band’, a local jazz band who are
playing at the Edinburgh Festival this summer.
A member of Southside Players
in London since 2005. Michael
has appeared in Twelve Angry
Men, The Visit and Wyrd
Sisters. He is soon to be seen
in a new Channel Five Series
playing a vet!
Matthew Jordan - Chino
Matthew has been with
DAPA for 3 years in which
time he has played a variety
of roles including The
Scarecrow (The Wiz), The
Bishop
of
Digne
(Les
Misérables) and Sam Silver
(Copacabana). His time with
DAPA has confirmed his thoughts of
wanting to take up a career in Acting.
This is Neil’s first production
with DAPA, and it is fair to say
that he falls a little outside the
normal age range of the
group! Neil’s recent roles
elsewhere include Dracula, Mr
Toad (Wind in the Willows),
Juror 10 (Tweleve Angry Men),
all with Southside Players in Balham, and Ivan
in Art (DDOS).

Geoff Collins – Doc
Geoff has been involved in
theatre for most of his life
including over 50 years with
DDOS, playing such roles as
Fagin in Oliver, Professor
Higgins in My Fair Lady and
Henry in Lion in Winter. Geoff
says “It has been a real
pleasure to be in a DAPA production with
such talented and enthusiastic young people.

Synopsis
ACT 1
The act begins with a conflict between two
rival teenage gangs, the “American” Jets
and the “Puerto Rican“ Sharks. The boys are
struggling for control of the neighbourhood
and the police are under pressure to control
the growing conflict.
The Jet gang leader convinces his friend
Tony to re-join the Jets at the neighbourhood dance, where he plans to challenge
the Sharks to an all out rumble. Tony
reluctantly agrees, but sees himself growing
away from the gang and envisions a
different, better future.
Maria, the sister of the Shark leader
Bernardo, works with Anita, (Bernardo’s
girlfriend) in a bridal shop. Like Tony, she is
full of hope. Bernardo arrives with Chino, a
quiet intense member of the Sharks, whom
Maria’s family have selected for her to marry.
At the dance Glad Hand tries to integrate
the two sides without success and the gangs
soon divide out to their own sides. Tony and
Maria however, see one another and fall in
love. The romantic idyll is interrupted when
an enraged Bernardo roughly pulls Maria
from Tony’s arms and sends her home. Riff
and Bernardo arrange a war council at the
local drug store, considered neutral ground.
Tony finds Maria and whilst serenading her
declares his love. Meanwhile, the Shark girls
argue over the differences between Puerto
Rico and America. The war council is
interrupted by Lt. Schrank, the local
detective, but not before the gangs have
agreed terms for the rumble.
Tony meets Maria at the bridal shop where
they dream of their wedding. She begs Tony
to stop the fight and he agrees. At the
rumble, Tony tries to stop the fight, but
Bernardo provokes him and ridicules his
attempt to make peace. Riff and Bernardo
get in a fight involving knives and as Tony
tries to stop it, Bernardo stabs Riff. In a blind
fury, Tony kills Bernardo. The sirens scream;
everyone runs except Tony, who stands
transfixed at what he has done. Anybodys,
helps Tony to escape, just in time.
ACT 2
Unaware of the tragedy under the highway,
Maria daydreams with her friends about
being in love. Chino enters with the news
that Tony has killed Bernardo. Left alone,
Maria is praying when Tony arrives to win
her forgiveness. They declare their determination to be together, imagining a world
where they can live in peace and harmony.
In an alley, Officer Krupke questions A-Rab
and Baby John about the rumble. After they
run away, the Jets reform and ridicule Krupke.
Anita arrives at Maria’s apartment. Tony
escapes through the window, telling Maria to
meet him at Doc’s so they can run away
together. Anita realises what has happened
and turns on Maria in fury. When Maria
explains, Anita realises how much Maria loves
Tony and warns her that Chino has a gun and
is planning to murder Tony. Schrank arrives to
question Maria and Anita agrees to go to
Doc’s to tell Tony to wait for her.
Anita is prevented from reaching Tony by the
Jets who verbally and physically taunt her,
only prevented from raping her when Doc
arrives. In her fury and humiliation, Anita lies
and tells the Jets Chino has killed Maria. Doc
tells Tony, who is hiding in the cellar. With
Maria and his dreams for the future gone,
Tony runs out to find Chino, begging for
Chino to kill him too. On the street, he finds
Maria alive, but as they run towards each
other, Chino appears and shoots Tony. He
dies in Maria’s arms. Maria takes Chino’s
gun and tells everyone that hatred is what
killed Tony and the others. She collapses in
grief and her words and actions bring the
cycle of violence to an end.

GAIL LOWE – Director/Choreographer/Producer
Gail obtained an honours degree in Drama and Theatre Studies at
Royal Holloway College, London University and later went on to take
an MA in Choreography at Middlesex University. She has been involved
in theatre and performing arts all her life and is also a professional
video and multimedia producer/director. Gail has produced and
directed many theatre productions including Fiddler on the Roof,
Anything Goes, Guys and Dolls, Les Misérables, Copacabana, Pippin,
Stepping Out, Billy and Pendragon.
Gail is a qualified dance teacher with the United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers
of Dancing (UKA) and has competed at national level in ballroom and Latin and as part of
a successful Latin Formation Team.
JAMIE CORDELL – Musical Director/Producer
Jamie began his musical training as a junior exhibitioner at Trinity
College of Music, London. While there he sang in many of London's
concert venues, including St John's Smith Square and the Queen
Elizabeth Hall. He subsequently studied both as an undergraduate and
postgraduate at the University of Surrey, specialising in performance
and conducting.
Jamie is conductor of Beare Green and Newdigate Choral Society and previously musical
director for JSD Theatre Company and Dorking Dramatic & Operatic Society. Show work
includes Godspell, Matchgirls, Oklahoma, Oliver, Annie, Fiddler on the Roof, 42nd Street,
Guys and Dolls, Stepping Out, Copacabana, Pendragon and Les Misérables.

DAPA PRODUCTIONS IS PROUD TO BE AFFILIATED TO NODA
The National Operatic and
Dramatic Association (NODA)
was founded in 1899 and has a
membership of over 2,300
amateur societies and 3,000
individual enthusiasts throughout the UK,
staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and
pantomimes in a wide variety of performance
venues, ranging from the country's leading
professional theatres to tiny village halls.
youth groups to adult companies which
meet the needs of all levels of both
performers, whether dramatic or musical,
and enthusiasts involved backstage, front of
house or administration. Each production
created is a genuine community event.
NODA is divided into eleven Areas each
headed by an Area Councillor who sits on
the National Council (the ruling body of the
Association), supported by a network of
Regional Representatives. These 180
volunteers are the vital link to the grass
roots of the Association, the amateur
theatre companies. The Association is
administered from its Headquarters, with a
knowledge and friendly staff able to deal
with virtually any enquiry relating to
amateur theatre. There is a broad spectrum
of ages involved in amateur theatre

DAPA SUMMER SCHOOL 2007 PRESENTS
(7-13 year olds)
Join Alice’s madcap adventures in Wonderland as she chases the White
Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own
game! This fast-paced stage adaptation of Alice in Wonderland features
updated dialogue and new arrangements of such classic Disney songs as
“I’m Late,” “The Un-birthday Song” and “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah.”
The course will culminate in a performance on the final day

(14-19 year olds)
Written specially for this course, “60 shows in 90 minutes” is a fast moving
musical extravaganza. Journey through a selection of West End and Broadway
hits and also experience some of the more unusual musicals from the 20th
Century. The course will culminate in a performance on the final day.
