THEATRON VISIT SCÉNOSCOPE @ T2G; 6 SEPTEMBER 2014 Scénoscope aimed to open up Théâtre de Gennevilliers to local audiences with the help of local artists and associations. Scénoscope is a collaborative project organized annually by the association Equip'Arts , represented by the 16 students in the Master's degree Professional Careers in theater production (Paris 3 - Sorbonne Nouvelle). THEATRON VISIT SCÉNOSCOPE @ T2G; 6 SEPTEMBER 2014 Scénoscope is a one-off, full-day event, specifically aimed to open up Théâtre de Gennevilliers to local audiences. Scénoscope was organized by 16 students in the Master's degree Professional Careers in theater production (Paris 3 - Sorbonne Nouvelle), who were invited by Pacal Rambert to take over the theatre for one day, and devise the programme they deemed most appropriate. Objectives The objective of Scénoscope was to open the doors to the theater to its community, making the walls of the building permeable, spilling out onto the streets of the city. The idea was to: • • • • make the theatre a meeting place to reflect on the codes of theatrical performance to create new forms of artistic experiences for both artists and the public, actor of the event to help the participating students and future professionals in the world of performing arts to experience every stage of project construction. Programme From 12 am to 2am the next day, the theater offered audiences the chance explore every room, every hallway and every corner. Throughout the day, different activities (cooking, story telling, dancing, workshops, radio show) and performances (music, short sketches and plays, graffiti art, DJ) were designed in collaboration with local associations to attract a wide range of audiences. The main artistic partner was the local theatre company ‘Scena Nostra’, who aimed to create “new theatrical in-situ experiments” based on the interests and exchanges with the local community. 1 Theatron Relevance 1. The project was specifically geared at opening the house to new audiences – with a focus on the local community of Gennevilliers, that usually does not enter the theatre. It seems like the approach of working closely with local associations worked, with more than 400 participants of different backgrounds and ages. Pascal Rambert remarked “look at these people – they would usually never enter this building”. 2. The project was run by a group of students in Theatre Production. This not only allowed them to fully programme a professional theatre event, but brought new ideas, approaches and partners into the house. On the content side, this included collaboration with artistic groups such as Scena Nostra and partnerships with local charities such as ‘disco soup’. On the promotion side, it included innovative approaches to fundraising and communication, such as a crowdfunding campaign on KissKiss BankBank (€ 2.186), graffiti days and appearances at the local market. Students actively engaged local partners and passing citizens one by one, inviting them to step in and take part. Next steps It would be interesting to present this project as a ‘case study’ with more details and see what impact the Scénoscope approach had in terms of attracting local audiences, and whether there could be a longterm effect. The collaboration with students and young professionals is another key interest for Theatron, and could be worth exploring further. This could be done by exchanging best practice about collaborating with theatre schools, by adapting the Scénoscope approach in other houses, or by creating a joint project /event with different students.
