ACCESSIBILITY The Todd Wehr Theater includes
barrier-free access and accessible seating areas.
Infrared hearing devices are available in the lobby,
as well as sign language interpreted performances.
Please see our House Manager to inquire about these

CHILDREN AT OUR PERFORMANCES While First
Stage presents theater productions for families, we
recommend that children under age 3 do not attend
our performances. All patrons must have a ticket to be
admitted. Children may sit in laps, but an admission
ticket is required. Please remove your child from the
theater if he or she becomes a distraction during the
performance. The House Manager and ushers may
ask parents or guardians to leave the theater, should
their child become disruptive. Those who need to
leave the theater may view the performance from the
monitors in the lobby.
ELECTRONIC DEVICES The use of cameras, recording
equipment, and other electronic devices is strictly
prohibited in the theater during performances.
Please silence all cell phones and pagers during the
performance.
EMERGENCIES If someone needs to reach you during
a performance, they may call (414) 273-7121 and ask
for security. Those anticipating urgent messages may
also give that number to their services. Please leave
your paging device and seat location with the House

How does one define normal? Or strange? Or beautiful? Or ugly?
We are constantly bombarded by a media that tells us who and how we should
be, and often what we see and here from the media is reinforced by our peers –
spinning us into a frenzied worry about how we must fix ourselves to fit in with
society’s norms.

While simultaneously celebrating and skewering fairy tales, SHREK offers two
heroes, who through their love for one another, learn to celebrate who they are

What does this really mean? If you’ve been attending First Stage shows for many
years, have your children or grandchildren discovered our Theater Academy?
Teaching life skills through stage skills, the Academy is the nation’s largest high
impact theater training program. Young people from ages 3-18 can find classes
that are fun, engaging and help build skills in teamwork, self-confidence, and
leadership. If you have an interest in Shakespeare, or improv, or learning how to
be “on camera,” there is a Theater Academy class for you!
Perhaps your children or grandchildren have attended First Stage plays with their
school. Did you know that our Theater in Education team works in more than
500 Milwaukee area classrooms annually, helping educators and students use
the theater process to teach curriculum? This arts integrated process encourages using imagination and exploration to understand difficult subject matter,
and makes learning fun!

Jeff Frank (Director/Artistic
Director) Jeff has been First
Stage’s artistic director since
February 2003. Previously he
had served as education director/associate artistic director. Jeff is a native Wisconsinite who earned a B.F.A. in
theater from UW–Whitewater
and went on to the University
of Utah, earning an M.F.A. in
child drama. Over the past 12 seasons Jeff has
directed many First Stage productions. Among his
favorites are: CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE
FACTORY, PETER PAN AND WENDY, U: BUG: ME,
THE NEVERENDING STORY, SLEEPING BEAUTY,
TOM SAWYER, SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON, LILLY’S PURPLE PLASTIC PURSE, A LITTLE HOUSE
CHRISTMAS, THE HOBBIT, A MIDNIGHT CRY,
PERSEUS BAYOU, A CHRISTMAS STORY and THE
GIVER. I want to thank my daughters Marion and
Lillian for sharing their father with countless other
young people, and to my wife Sarah who makes all
things possible. And to our audiences, thank you
and bless you for believing in the power of theater
to transform lives. With your support we are making
a difference in the lives of young people and their
families by developing and producing the best plays
for families, teaching life skills through stage skills
in the nation’s leading theater training program for
young people, and implementing innovative and
engaging education programs with our schools and
community.
Betsy Corry (Managing Director) This is Betsy’s second
year in her second tour of
duty as managing director of
First Stage! Prior to returning
to First Stage, Betsy was associate executive director at
COA Youth & Family Centers
and director of development at
Milwaukee Repertory Theater.
Born and raised in New York
City, Betsy holds a B.A. in Art/
Art History from Beloit College and an M.S. in Museum Education from the Bank Street College of Education. She was a 2002 Scholarship Recipient of the
Harvard Business School Club of Wisconsin and attended Harvard’s Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management. Her proudest moments have been
participating, with husband Dan, in the lives of their
three daughters – Maggie, Franny, and Grace – all
of whom are First Stage Theater Academy alumna.
Betsy wishes to thank First Stage’s Board of Directors and Artistic Director Jeff Frank for bringing her
back to her “happy place.” She looks forward to
moving the company into its next 25 years!

Rob Goodman (Founder) As
the company’s founding artistic director, Rob has guided
the vision of First Stage since
its premiere season in 1987,
first as artistic director, then
managing director from 20032012, and now in an emeritus
role, working on a special
campaign for the company’s
FUTURE. In 2011 the Children’s Theatre Foundation of America awarded
Rob the Orin Corey Medallion award for significant
achievement. As a director his most memorable
shows include BAMBI: A LIFE IN THE WOODS,
ZINK: THE MYTH. THE LEGEND. THE ZEBRA,
SMOLDERING FIRES, and HANA’S SUITCASE. A
significant part of his career was the successful collaboration with MYSO and the creation of the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, a national model for arts
education. Rob received his M.F.A. in directing from
the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He
is a member of Actors’ Equity Association and the
Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. A
past arctic explorer and Vietnam veteran, he is also
a deacon for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee serving
at Three Holy Women Parish while living with Mary
in Bay View.
David Lindsay-Abaire (Book & Lyrics) was most recently nominated for two Tony Awards for his work
on SHREK THE MUSICAL: Best Book of a Musical
and Best Score (with composer Jeanine Tesori).
Prior to that he was awarded the 2008 Ed Kleban
Award as America’s most promising musical theatre
lyricist and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his
play RABBIT HOLE, which premiered on Broadway
at MTC’s Blitmore Theatre. RABBIT HOLE also
received five Tony Award nominations, including
Best Play, and the Spirit of America Award. His
other shows include FUDDY MEERS, KIMBERLY
AKIMBO, WONDER OF THE WORLD, HIGH FIDELITY and A DEVIL INSIDE, among others. In addition
to his work in theatre, David’s screen adaptation of
RABBIT HOLE just finished shooting. It stars Nicole
Kidman and is directed by John Cameron Mitchell.
David is a proud New Dramatists alum, a graduate
of Sarah Lawrence College and the Julliard School,
as well as a member of the WGA and the Dramatists
Guild Council.
Jeanine Tesori (Music) has written three Tonynominated scores for Broadway: TWELFTH NIGHT
(Lincoln Center); THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
(lyrics, Dick Scanian); and CAROLINE, OR CHANGE
(lyrics, tony Kushner; director, George C. Wolfe).
The National Theatre production of CAROLINE, OR
CHANGE in London received the Olivier Award for
Best New Musical. Her first musical, VIOLET, written
with Brian Crawley, received the NY Drama Critics
Circle Award. She has received Drama Desk and
Obie Awards, and was cited by ASCAP as the first
woman composer to have “two new musicals run-
ning concurrently on Broadway.” She composed
the music for the New York Shakespeare Festival’s
MOTHER COURAGE, directed by George C. Wolfe
and translated by Tony Kushner. Film scores include
NIGHTS IN RODANTHE, WINDS OF CHANGE,
SHOW BUSINESS, and WRESTLING WITH ANGELS. She composed songs for the movie Shrek
The Third and for the Disney DVD releases Mulan
II, Lilo and Stitch II, and The Little Mermaid III. Ms.
Tesori is a member of the Dramatists Guild. She is
a graduate of Barnard College and lives in Manhattan with her husband, Michael Rafter, and daughter,
Siena.

Richard Carsey (Music Director) Richard Carsey is
a conductor, arranger, pianist and actor. In 2012, he
served as music director for the first national tour of
the Broadway revival of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES starring George Hamilton and Christopher Sieber. On
Broadway in 2011 he provided music coaching for
HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES starring Ben Stiller and
Edie Falco, and was music supervisor for Joshua
Schmidt’s world premiere musical A MINISTER’S
WIFE at Lincoln Center Theater (original cast recording available on PSClassics). In 2010 he was music
director for the first national tour of LITTLE HOUSE
ON THE PRAIRIE, starring Melissa Gilbert. For eight
seasons he was artistic director of the Skylight Music Theatre, and has conducted over 70 productions
there, most recently PORGY AND BESS. Other music direction: Syracuse Opera; Florida State Opera;
Marriott Lincolnshire Theater; Writer’s Theater; First
Stage. As an actor, he has appeared in 2 PIANOS,
4 HANDS at the Milwaukee Rep; Actors’ Theater
of Louisville; Dallas Theater Center; Laguna Beach
Playhouse; Hartford Stage Company (Conn. Critics
Circle Award), and the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival. Also onstage in SOUVENIR (Skylight), DIRTY BLONDE (Chamber Theater), OLD
WICKED SONGS (In Tandem). Upcoming: Music
Director/Conductor for the national tour of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
Brian Myers (Assistant Music Director) Brian Myers
is a singer/pianist works throughout the Milwaukee
area as a music director, singer/actor, and teaching
artist for students of music and theatre. Myers is also
a composer who took his one-act musical “STATUS:
a music drama for the digital age” to New York City
in 2011, following a workshop at Milwaukee Opera
Theater. He will premiere his cabaret show “Randy
Newman’s America” this August at Soulstice Theatre. For information about Brian’s music and upcoming performances, dig his fan page on Facebook!
Jessica Redish, SDC (Choreographer) Jessica is
pleased to return to First Stage where she recently
choreographed PINKALICIOUS and SEUSSICAL.
Jessica is the founding artistic director of The Music
Theatre Company in Highland Park, IL, where she
directed and choreographed the company’s productions of PIPPIN (Joseph Jefferson Award Nomination
- Choreography) MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG, ERIKA’S WALL, THE 9/11 REPORT, and choreographed
THE PAJAMA GAME. Other Chicago choreography
credits include SWEET CHARITY and SHE LOVES
ME at Writers’ Theatre and RENT at American Theater Company/About Face Theatre, directed by David Cromer. New York Credits include Movement
Direction for the off-Broadway production of ADDING MACHINE directed by Mr. Cromer, as well as
directing and choreographing various new musicals
at the New York Musical Theatre Festival and NYFringe. She has served as a guest artist at Roosevelt
University, Hollins University, Perry Mansfield, and
Northwestern University, her alma mater. Jessica is a

Brandon Kirkham (Costume Designer) Brandon
Kirkham is a scenic, costume and puppet designer in
Milwaukee, WI. Brandon’s designs with First Stage
include costumes, sets, and puppets for RUDOLPH
THE RED-NOSED REINDEER® (2012), SEUSSICAL
(2011), U: BUG: ME (2011), and PETER PAN AND
WENDY (2010). In addition to designing, Brandon
is also First Stage’s resident costume crafts artisan.
Additionally, he has worked as a freelance designer
and craftsperson for theaters across the country,
including Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee
Chamber Theatre, Santa Fe Opera, Steppenwolf

Lauren is a Los Angeles based makeup and special
effects artist specializing in prosthetics, makeup design and wig building. After gaining a couple years of
experience and a Bachelor of Music from LSU, she
moved to North Carolina to pursue an M.F.A. from
UNCSA in Wig and Makeup Design. In the past year,
Lauren’s work has been nationally and internationally showcased, receiving the 2013 National Makeup
Design Award by Kryolan, and was chosen to be a
part of the 2013 USITT Young Designers’ Forum and
the IMATS Battle of the Brushes International Character Competition. She currently enjoys working in
film and television, building film quality wigs, sculpting and making prosthetics, monsters, creatures,
puppets and above all, making art. Jason Fassl, USAA (Lighting Designer) Jason Fassl
has designed the lighting for over 20 productions at
First Stage, including RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED
REINDEER® (2012), THE WIZ (2010), WITNESS
(2009) and A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD (2008).
For the last 10 seasons, Jason has designed lighting
for over 300 theatrical productions across the upper
Midwest. He serves as an associate artist for First
Stage and the resident designer for The Fireside
Theatre. Jason’s designs have spanned the stages
of the Milwaukee Ballet, the Milwaukee Repertory
Theater, Peninsula Players, American Players Theatre, Forward Theatre Company, Door Shakespeare,
Renaissance Theaterworks, Next Act Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, and many others. Jason

Matt Whitmore (Sound Designer) Matt Whitmore
is a sound designer from Milwaukee, WI. He has
designed productions for First Stage, including
RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER® (2012),
DON’T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS (2012),
MISS NELSON IS MISSING (2011) and AESOP’S
FABLES (2010). He is the operations assistant at
the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center along with designing and engineering throughout southeastern Wisconsin. He is a 2006 graduate of Columbia College
Chicago, with a B.A. in audio arts and acoustics.
Mark Hare (Puppet Designer/Properties Director)
Mark is happy to have been with First Stage since
2002. His duties with First Stage have included Prop
Master, Scenic Artist, Scenic Designer and Puppet
Designer. Mark is also the holiday display manager for a local bank, sometimes referred to as the
“teddy bear guy.” Prior to joining First Stage, Mark
has worked with the Milwaukee Repertory Theater,
Renaissance Theaterworks, Skylight Music Theatre,
American Players Theatre, the Cleveland Playhouse,

Great Lakes Theater Festival, Cleveland Opera, and

Melissa L. Wanke (Stage Manager) Melissa is delighted to return as the resident stage manager for

Johanna Cohan (Production Manager) Johanna
Cohan is in her first season as production manager
at First Stage. Prior to arriving, Johanna served as
a production supervisor at Brooklyn Academy of
Music, associate production manager at the Alley
Theatre, assistant production manager at Steppenwolf Theatre Company and associate production
manager at Williamstown Theatre Festival. Recent

Matt Grundman (Assistant Production Manager)
Matt is glad to be back for his seventh season with
the First Stage Production Department. Over the
years he has worked in many different capacities for
First Stage. Some of his favorite past productions

John Maclay (Shrek/Associate Artistic Director/Director of
the Young Company) John has
been working with First Stage
in one form or other since
2000 and has directed or appeared in over 25 First Stage
productions. As director of
the Theater Academy’s Young
Company, John has also produced over 50 productions
in the First Stage high school programs. Favorite
projects include AS YOU LIKE IT, MY SON PINOCCHIO, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, HOW
I BECAME A PIRATE, WITNESS, THE BODY OF
CHRISTOPHER CREED, GREEN GABLES and THE

Mari Duckler (Teen Fiona/Ensemble) High school
sophomore Mari is thrilled to be part of her fifth
Family Series show – especially because she gets
to share the stage with her little brother in his First
Stage debut. First Stage has grown with Mari and
has been an important part of her life since she began as the precocious Junie B. Jones in 2009 (probably her favorite role to date) and is now Teen Fiona.
As part of Young Company, Mari has gained invaluable experience and made lifetime friendships that
she hopes will follow her on her path to her ultimate
stage: Broadway. Mari and her family would like to

Zach Duckler (Young Shrek/Ensemble) Ten-year-old
Zach is excited to be on the Todd Wehr stage instead
of in the lobby selling snacks while his sister performs
(though he misses hanging out with awesome House
Manager Michael Warren). He has loved being part
of such a great cast and getting to work alongside
the adults who he is used to seeing around summer
academy. Zach loves to perform, but he also loves
playing baseball, watching football and collecting everything from baseball cards to rocks. He thinks it’s
really cool to be in a show with his sister and hopes
you find Shrek as funny as he does.
Selena Esten (Duloc Performer/Ensemble) Selena is
a seventh-grader from Cedarburg. She loves sing-

Abigail Hanna (Young Fiona/Ensemble) Abigail
is thrilled to be playing the role of Young Fiona in
SHREK THE MUSICAL. Previous credits with First
Stage include MOLE HILL STORIES and A WRINKLE IN TIME. Most recently, Abby performed with
Skai Academy as “Rizzo” in GREASE THE MUSICAL, at her school. Abby is a fifth-grader at Milwaukee Parkside School for the Arts in Bay View. She is
a proud cellist for the MYSO Sinfonia orchestra and
recently won first place on MYSO’s 2013 Cello competition. Besides acting, Abby loves playing piano,
singing, ice skating and bee keeping. She thanks her

Alexander Quade (Pig 1/Ensemble) Alex is a freshman at Whitefish Bay High School. This is his first

Alex has performed in his school musicals and has

Alison Pogorelc (Teen Fiona/Ensemble) Alison is

summer playing the role of Feste in TWELFTH NIGHT
in Classical Company Class. Alison has been seen

Haley Rapisarda (Pig 2/Ensemble) Haley could not
be more excited to be part of this incredible production of SHREK THE MUSICAL. This is Haley’s debut
into the First Stage family, but has been part of the
Academy for many years. Haley is a sophomore at

Meghan Schaefer (Young Fiona/ Ensemble) Meghan
is 10 years old and attends fifth grade at St. Mary’s
in Waukesha. This is her second First Stage production and has performed in a number of other plays.
Her favorite acting role thus far was ANNIE. She is a
proud member of the Waukesha Wonders Gymnastics Team and plays volleyball for her school. Kaitlyn Serketich (Pig 3/Ensemble) Kaitlyn is thrilled
to be a part of SHREK THE MUSICAL! This is her
fourth performance in a First Stage production.
She also performed with the Milwaukee Rep in A
CHRISTMAS CAROL for five years. Kaitlyn is a senior at Thomas More High School. She thanks her
family for their support!
Madeline Waskiewicz (Duloc Performer/Ensemble)
Maddie is a junior at Grafton High School. This is
her second Family Series production. Besides theater, Maddie loves competitive cheerleading and
volunteering. She is so excited to be a part of such a
wonderful show and hopes that you enjoy it as much
as she does.
Malia Westlake (Baby Bear/Ensemble) Malia is
11 years old and goes to Swallow School in Hartland. She is so excited to be a part of SHREK THE
MUSICAL. This is her third production at First Stage
and has performed in several community productions; most recently as Goldilocks in GOLDILOCKS
at Pius XI High School. This past summer, Malia had
the amazing experience of spending a week in New
York City training with cast members from current
Broadway shows. She hopes to join them on the
stage some day! Elizabeth Stawski (Elf/Ensemble) Elizabeth is very
excited to be back at First Stage for her fourth production. Last season Elizabeth played Cynthia Benson in BIG, THE MUSICAL. She has also performed
with First Stage in SEUSSICAL and MISS NELSON
IS MISSING. Elizabeth is a freshman at Pius XI High
School and has been in dance for 12 years. She is so
thankful for the lifelong friends, memories and experiences that First Stage has provided her.
