Notes
from the Director
Butterfield 8 has from the beginning looked at gender and its role in
the work. I have been eager to put up a same gender cast and see where
it leads us. Originally, we were to only have the male cast but the more I
thought about it, the more I felt we had to have the women participate.
As a company we have all grown together and I wanted all of us to
have this experience. This is how it was done when it all started – for
Shakespeare no women were allowed to perform on stage. So as we
approach this in 2011 with all the baggage of a modern audience, what
will this reveal to us about how we perceive gender roles.
On a personal note, it has been a thrill to play Viola, she is in so many
ways my hero. Her strong connection to a sibling is something I very
much understand, it is this longing that to me is the center of the work.
She is forced to search for a life without her brother, and then hope
against all hope that he is still alive. It is through her that Olivia and
Orsino learn what it is to love.
Save thee, friend,
and thy music!
TheCast
Nathalie Archangel (Valentine/Priest) is honored to be making her debut
with Butterfield 8! Since moving to Northern California from Los Angeles in
2008, Nathalie has been part of many wonderful East Bay productions including
Harvey, Guys and Dolls and the Shellie Award winning Spitfire Grill. Prior to that,
she spent many years as a recording artist; first with CBS then with MCA. She
earned a double platinum record for her contribution to Bette Midler’s “Some
People’s Lives” release. Nathalie is awed and inspired by B8’s commitment to
making classical theatre accessible and is delighted to be part of this visionary
double cast experience. Look for her later this spring as she portrays another
male role: the disciple Mathew in CCCT’s touring production of Harry Chapin’s
Cotton Patch Gospel.
Ali Arman (Sea Captain/Fabian) is thrilled to be working with Butterfield 8! Her
last appearance with the company was in the staged reading of Sister during the
2008 New Works festival. She has worked in all facets of theatre with companies
such as CTA/Crossroads, Town Hall Theatre, and Diablo Actor’s Ensemble as
an ASM, crew member, and teaching artist. In addition, Ali studies theatre with
YoungREP and all forms of dance at Lareen Fender’s The Ballet School. When
she’s not in a theatre, Ali is pursuing degrees in English and Women’s Studies at
UC Berkeley. She would like to dedicate this performance to her grandmother
who, in her 70s, is a fellow college student. Enjoy the show!
Elinor Bell (Malvolio) is delighted with this first opportunity to work with
Butterfield 8. Favorite stage credits include Linda Loman in Death of a Salesman
at Altarena Playhouse, Mom/Mary in the world premiere of Where the Sidewalk
Ends at Boxcar Theatre, and especially “A” in Albee’s Three Tall Women at Role
Players Ensemble for which she received a Shellie nomination. On the small
screen, Elinor has regional commercial credits as well as roles in documentaries
about the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and Alexander Graham Bell. On film
you can see her in David Lewis’ award-winning feature Redwoods, which has
been dubbed in several languages and distributed internationally. Her most
challenging recent film work, which just finished post-production, was as the
schizophrenic Lucy Depree in Maria Breaux’s Mother Country in which her sisters
were played by Cindy Pickett and Thea Gill. Voiceover credits include radio and
website commercials, education and documentary narration, and audiobooks.

Jake Breckinridge (Curio) makes his debut with Butterfield 8.
John Butterfield (Viola; Director) is the founder and Artistic Director of
Butterfield 8 Theatre Company, now in its fifth season at Cue Productions Live,
and has been directing and choreographing productions in the Bay area for
many years. He studied directing at Toi Whakaari/Victoria University in New
Zealand, and while there performed in Shifting; a devised work at BATS theatre
in Wellington. In 2009 he returned to New Zealand where he staged Mates and
Lovers to critical acclaim at BATS. He has taught theatre and dance locally at CTA
and San Ramon Dance Academy and is currently teaching at Berkeley Ballet. As
a dancer he has toured the US with Dance Through Time and ODC, and was
a member of Company Chaddick for 8 years. He is a LEAP graduate from St.
Mary’s College, and in addition to directing and choreographing continues to
perform both locally and in New Zealand. To his whanau in NZ “Kaore i taea
e au te huna taku manako te koe.”
Alan Cameron (Malvolio) re-creates the role he played in Butterfield 8’s 2004
production of Twelfth Night. He last appeared with the company as the Lead
Player in Hamlet and starred in past productions of The Importance of Being Earnest
as Lady Bracknell and in The Merchant of Venice as Shylock. He also directed the
company’s production of The Women in 2009. Alan is a Shellie Award-winning
actor who has worked in local theatre for over 30 years. He dedicates his
portrayal of Malvolio to his own Puritan ancestors who fled persecution in 17th
century England for a new life in America.
Jeremy Cole (Maria) is making his B8 debut in Twelfth Night. Prior Bay Area
acting credits include Pointronus in Agnes the Barbarian and Mr. Goldfarb in
Aaaah! Rosebud, both for Thunderbird Theatre Company, and Dave in A Necessary
Evil at Theatre Rhinoceros. Directing credits include The Winter’s Tale, As It Is in
Heaven and Doctor Faustus for Actors Ensemble of Berkeley, Great Expectations at
Contra Costa Civic Theatre, and Aaron Trotter and the Incident at Bikini Beach for
Thunderbird Theatre Company. He also designs costumes - Bent, Special Forces
and Boston Marriage at Theatre Rhinoceros; The Sugar Bean Sisters and I Am My
Own Wife at San Jose Stage Company. His next project is writing a play based
on the Icarus myth for the San Francisco Olympans Festival. He thinks sleep
is overrated.
The Cast
(Continued)
Terry Downward (Antonio) is thrilled to be a part of Butterfield 8’s cast this
show. She is a sassy waitress by day and an actress by night who manages to fool
people into thinking she knows what she’s doing. Well-versed in Shakespeare,
she has been doing Rennaisance Pleasure Faires since she was little (read not
born). She also performs with the Broadside Music Hall as Miss Kitty Purrswell
at the Charles Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco. She is overjoyed to be
in another Shakespeare production, the last one being Much Ado About Nothing
where she played Margaret. She wants to thank Maureen and John for giving her
the opportunity to work with an all-female, gender-bending, far too silly cast,
and her mother and father for staying awake to come get her from the BART
station after late-night rehearsals.
Matthew Gardner (Sir Toby Belch) is thrilled to be making his debut with
Butterfield 8. He has lived and performed in the Bay Area for the last 20 years.
Along with female cast member Kerry Gudjohnsen, he is a founding member
of Third Rail Power Trip where he has appeared as “Henry Harry” in Cindy
Lou Johnson’s Brilliant Traces and “Jerry” in Harold Pinter’s Betrayal. Other
favorite roles include “Nick” in Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf
with Mystic Bison Theatre & Dance, “Student/Valet/Young Adolph Hitler”
in Give Us This Day: Loving Lotte Lenya at the Dominican University One Act
Festival (where he was named Best Actor), and “McBush” in Mike Hettinger’s
The Tragedy of McBush at the Alice Arts Center. He is also proud to be a founding
and current member of Barewitness Films (www.barewitness.com), a group of
Bay Area filmmakers creating original improvised films. In addition to acting,
directing, and producing, he is honored to have edited numerous films including
“Served Cold”, directed by Kerry (a fellow member), which was awarded Best
Editing for the 2007 San Francisco edition of the 48 Hour Film Project.

Kerry Gudjohnsen (Duke Orsino), a local actor/director, splits her creative
life between theater and filmmaking. This is Kerry’s fifth adventure with
Butterfield 8, having most recently been a part of the group’s workshop reading
of Pride and Prejudice, and seen as Sylvia Fowler in the group’s production of The
Women, directed by Alan Cameron. Some of her favorite past theatrical roles
include Emma in Harold Pinter’s Betrayal (Third Rail Power Trip, dir.: Nancy
Lawson), Elvira in Blithe Spirit (Butterfield 8, dir.: John Butterfield); Hermione in
Berkeley Actors Ensemble’s Winter’s Tale and Queen Elizabeth in Subterranean
Shakespeare’s Richard III (both directed by Jeremy Cole). Kerry is also a proud
member of Barewitness Films (www.barewitness.com), a collective of actors
and filmmakers that specializes in improvised filmmaking. Kerry feels truly
blessed and grateful for the endless support of her castmates, family, and
friends, and especially thankful to her partner John for his love, humor, and
encouragement.
Charlie Guitron (Antonio) is a certified Concord Kid. This is his 14th show
in the last 10 months. Pursuing his love for the theatre he acts and techs all
over the bay area working with PCT, Masquers, Butterfield 8, OrSVP, Onstage
Productions and the Lesher Center. He hopes you enjoy the show and invite
your friends to come see it. He dedicates this show to the love of his life
Stephanie Stratman.
David Hardie (Sir Andrew Aguecheek) is honored to be back with Butterfield
8, having performed in the past in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2002, Twelfth
Night in 2004, Blithe Spirit in 2006, Romeo and Julian and Much Ado About Nothing
in 2007, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Merchant of Venice in 2008,
Cymbeline and As You Like It in 2009, and last year as Ezra Chater in Arcadia and
Guildenstern/Grave Digger in Hamlet. This, and every performance he gives, is
dedicated to the memory of his BEST friend Terri “Buster” Bischel who passed
away from cancer in 2006. Love you, miss you! Giddy Up!
Billy Higgins (Olivia) makes his debut with Butterfield 8.
Daylight and champagne discovers not more.
The Cast
(Continued)
Lisa M. Luttinger (Curio) is excited to be debuting with Butterfield 8 in her
first Shakespeare role. Prior to joining this production of Twelfth Night, she has
appeared with Pittsburg Community Theater in Gaslight Girl and The Quality
of Life, Berkeley Black Repertory Theater in Marriage Counseling, Round Belly
Theater in two productions of the experimental 24Hour Theater project, San
Francisco Opera’s Norma, and Diablo Valley College in Batboy the Musical, Iphigenia
at Aulis, and Clash and Celebration of American Culture, where she also honed her
craft with some amazing professors. When away from acting (but why would
she want to be), she enjoys volunteering for charity groups like The Princess
Project, Christmas in April, Believe in the Dream, and Habitat for Humanity,
as well as reading classic literature, writing poetry, travel, dancing to a great beat,
singing karaoke with friends or her guilty pleasure of watching Dexter. During
the day she dedicates her time in a Biotech company in the hope that in some
small way her efforts will bring lifesaving therapies to the world.
Chris Mantione (Orsino; Fight Choreography) is thrilled to be making his full
fledged Butterfield 8 debut with this production of Twelfth Night. He is extremely
excited to be back on stage after a nearly two year absence, and excited that his
return to the stage comes with a work of the great bard himself. He has worked
with the company in the capacity of fight choreographer on the past productions
of Claire Booth Luce’s The Women and William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Chris
holds a certificate in acting from Solano College’s Actor Training program, an
Associates Degree in Theatre also from Solano College, and a Bachelor of the
Arts from U.C. Davis. Chris would like to thank John Butterfield, Maureen
Williams, and the rest of the company for the opportunity and wonderful
experience in creating this production. He would also like to thank his family
for their continued love and support and his beautiful girlfriend Sarah for her
support, love and understanding in his continued drive to achieve the dream.
Chris dedicates this production to all supporters of live theatre everywhere who,
through their continued support, truly bring the magic of live theatre to life.
Some are born great, some achieve greatness,
and some have greatness thrust upon ‘em.

Kathleen Mackay (Feste) has worn several hats for Butterfield 8 in the last few
years, both on stage and behind the scenes. She is an active renaissance faire
performer, and is the Vocal Director for Dotter’s Knot, a woman’s a cappella
group. Kathleen is abjuring the third person for the remainder of this bio:
“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, some have greatness thrust upon
them” … and some are lucky enough to see greatness in action. John, with
your grace, your vision, and your unswerving dedication to the integrity of the
work, you inspire me to be a better performer and a better person, and you
challenge me to move forward in ways I would never have dreamed of on my
own, both on stage and off. I thank you for the tools you have given me, for the
opportunity to watch you and learn from you, and for the staggeringly ethereal
company of players you allow me to be part of. I would also like to send a
special thank you to Daniel Briggs for the “golden” inspiration, and on a very
personal note, would like to say, “Cousin, we miss you, you big goober.”
JanLee Marshall (Sir Toby Belch) makes her third appearance with Butterfield
8, having previously appeared as Lady Montague in Romeo and Julian, and as Peter
Quince in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She received her degree in Theatre from
Ohio Wesleyan University and is also a proud graduate of the Ringling Bros.
Barnum & Bailey Clown College. Some of her favorite roes include Bananas in
House of Blue Leaves, Hannah Jarvis in Arcadia, and Roz in Moon Over Buffalo. She
is also a drama teacher at the Meher School in Lafayette. JanLee would like to
thank Erik, Quinn and Indigo for all their love and support.
Edwin Peabody (Feste) has been performing locally since 1994 and with
Butterfield 8 since 2008. He is excited to be working again with John Butterfield
and this fabulous cast and crew. He graduated from the American Academy of
Dramatic Arts in Hollywood in 2001 and is married with six furry children living
in the east Bay Area. Favorite roles include Septimus in Arcadia (B8) and the
title role in Cyrano de Bergerac (Orinda Starlight Village Players). He dedicates this
performance to his beautiful wife, playing Sir Andrew in the female cast.
O Time, thou must untangle this, not I;
It is too hard a knot for me t’ untie!
The Cast
(Continued)
Jennifer Brown Peabody (Sir Andrew Aguecheek) was first seen with
Butterfield 8 as Crystal Allen, in the 2009 production of The Women. You may
have also seen her performances with other theatre companies in the area;
Onstage Theatre, Antioch Rivertown Theatre, Galatean Players, Vagabond
Player, and Darkroom Productions. She is thrilled to be working with such a
superb cast of gentlewomen. Jennifer would like to remind you to please spay
and neuter your pets to help curb the overpet population. She thanks her family
and friends for their support in her theatre adventures; especially her handsome
husband who is in the all male cast of this production.
Becky Potter (Viola) is always thrilled to be returning to Butterfield 8 where she
has appeared as Nerissa in The Merchant of Venice, Nancy in the staged reading of
Abigail Dreary, Cecily in The Importance of Being Earnest, Hermia in A Midsummer
Night’s Dream, Hero in Much Ado About Nothing, Imogen in Cymbeline, Leona
in Zelda’s Mama’s Cookin’, Thomasina in Arcadia and Ophelia in Hamlet. Becky
graduated from UC Irvine where some of her favorite roles included Claire in
Fuddy Meers, Silvius in As You Like It, Dunyazade in Arabian Nights, and Ruthie
in Bat Boy. In the Bay Area she has been seen in such shows as In the Beginning,
Fiddler on the Roof, Inherit the Wind, Brimstone, and every performance of John Muir’s
Mountain Days (all for the Willows Theatre Company) and in Peter Pan (DLOC).
Becky finished her Master’s in Drama last spring at SFSU and is currently
juggling many jobs including teaching theatre at Oakland School for the Arts.
Sam Selliman (Olivia) is the illegitimate love child of a Māori wahine and a
Mormon missionary. After being abandoned in Australia and raised by dingoes,
Sam matriculated from obedience school and went on to college. In 2004,
she graduated summa cum laude from Toi Whakaari (a New Zealand Drama
School and Cult Religion), where she met John Butterfield. The rest is, as they
say, tāhuhu kōrero.
Ian Taylor (Sea Captain/Fabian) makes his eighth appearance with Butterfield
8, having played Balthasar in Romeo and Julian, Watch in Much Ado About Nothing,
George in The Bird House, Snug in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Norman in the
staged reading of Sister, Arviragus, et. al. in Cymbeline, and Silvius in As You Like
It. He studied with the Willows Theatre Conservatory, and appeared in their
SummerStage productions of Phantom, Urinetown, and as Mrs. Taylor in Bat Boy.
The Cast
(Continued)
Molly Kate Taylor (Sebastian) has been a student and intern for Center
REP’s Young REP program for the past seven years and also momentarily
studied physical theatre at The Flying Actor Studio. Past shows include Hamlet
(Gertrude), Saint Joan (Joan), Blithe Spirit (Madame Arcati), and Much Ado About
Nothing (Beatrice). She was last seen (and first seen!) at Butterfield 8 in Aria da
Capo. She would like to take this moment for the obligatory “thanks”, where
she will thank: John and Maureen (for giving her this opportunity), her parents
(for putting up with her shenanigans), her divas (for helping her with lines), and
her best friend and love of her life (for his endless support and constant love).
She hopes this show leaves you thinking, pondering, wondering, and smiling.
Josh Travierso (Sebastian) makes his debut with Butterfield 8. After a serious
accident in 2000, Josh has only in the past year returned to the stage. He studied
musical theatre extensively at ACT and Beverly Hills Playhouse from 1995 to
2000, and worked with The Great Dickens Christmas Faire as Nicholas Nickleby
doing improvisational theatre until his return to the stage last year with Running
Man productions in San Francisco. He is thrilled to be asked to join this cast of
shining individuals!
Tom Westlake (Valentine/Priest) makes his maiden voyage with Butterfield 8.
Previous to this, the bulk of his theatrical experience has been with the Original
Renaissance Pleasure Faire and his continuing involvement with The Great
Dickens Christmas Fair where he currently plays the Ghost of Christmas Yet to
Come and Jacob Marley both from A Christmas Carol. He has also participated
in the Marin Civic Light Opera’s Sweeny Todd, the 2009 season of the Orinda
Starlight Theatre in The Spider’s Web, Cyrano de Bergerac, and Harvey, and in Legion
Fantastique’s recreation of Orson Welles’ radio play The War of the Worlds on the
75th anniversary of its broadcast.
What is your parentage?
Above my fortunes, yet my state is well:
I am a gentleman.

Dear Audience Member,
You may not be a millionaire, yet when you purchased your ticket
for this show you became a philanthropist and a supporter of the arts in
your community.
Every ticket that you buy for local theatre, every drink or snack
you purchase in the lobby, supports the hidden organization of people
behind the scenes who supply space for rehearsal and performance,
costumes, sets, props, programs, publicity, and all the hidden structure
that supports the work that the actors do.
Please, continue to be our philanthropist, and our partner, in
shaping and keeping the theatre alive.

Lady Windermere’s Fan
by Oscar Wilde
“It takes a thoroughly good woman to do
a thoroughly stupid thing.”
The first of Oscar Wilde’s plays to see production, Lady Windermere’s Fan
takes us through a fantastical series of misunderstandings and deceptions
in Victorian London’s high society. The farce showcases Wilde’s
trademark wit while (like many of his comedies) providing a biting satire
on the morals of Victorian society and the institution of marriage.

The Mission of Butterfield 8 Theatre Company is to provide audiences
a fresh take on classic plays, and foster the creation of new works.
Our Vision is to present audiences with examples of both ends of
the theatrical spectrum: new productions of classic works, focusing in
particular on text-driven plays (such as the works of Shakespeare), and
new works devised by the company or written by local playwrights. Our
work often examines perceptions of gender, both within the context
of the play and the larger context of society as a whole. We strive to
create an immersive environment, believing the audience’s experience
starts when they buy the ticket, and shouldn't end when they leave the
theatre. We honor that the audience has come for a live theatre experience
to engage with a story or an idea; to be taken on a journey. This is our
responsibility, and our craft.
We are always looking for people to be active members of our Board
of Directors. The job requires people who have experience living and
working in the world, with an interest in helping us grow as a theatre
company. If you would like to help us achieve our vision, please contact
John Butterfield at (510) 282-6174 or [email protected].
