It’s a Wonderful Life is Philip Grecian’s staged radio
dramatization of Frank Capra's Academy Award-nominated
iconic holiday classic. It is the story of George Bailey, the
unsung hero of Bedford Falls. This production will feature
just 10 actors playing 63 speaking parts while sound effects
harkening back to the golden age of radio are performed
onstage. In this unique radio drama adapted for the stage,
the holiday tale that we know and love comes to life in an
ingenious way.

Great theatre offers us insights into the world in which
we live, and the subject of Frost/Nixon has never been more relevant than it is now,
in the waning days of the Bush administration. The play chronicles the battle of wits
undertaken by media heavyweights Richard Nixon and David Frost over 30 years ago,
following one of the most notorious political scandals in Western history. As you watch
this play, think about the strikingly parallel themes between the play and our own current
political landscape. What better way to begin my final year with Canadian Stage than
with this provocative and timely play.
And what more prodigious a start to our season than a production with three great
Canadian stars: Len Cariou, David Storch and Ted Dykstra. Ted, whose remarkable work
on last year’s Fire earned him two Dora Awards, and David, whose production of Palace
of the End won the 2008 Dora for Best New Play, have long been an integral part of
our family. We are also thrilled to welcome back the legendary Len Cariou, who last
performed on our stages in 1980 for Toronto Arts Productions.
As we launch our 08.09 season this month with Wild Dogs at Berkeley Street — the first
play of our new and exciting Berkeley Street Project — and Frost/Nixon here at the Bluma,
we are also embarking on choosing our 09.10 season. We are fortunate to have an incredible
group of Canadian and International artists with whom we will collaborate in presenting
theatre that will be as timely next year as Frost/Nixon is today. As my tenure with the
Company winds down over this season, I am thinking about questions of legacy. I couldn’t
be prouder to have this complex play as a part of that.

We’ve had a busy summer at Canadian
Stage, preparing exciting initiatives
supporting new work, artist development
and offering opportunities for our audiences
to go behind the scenes. Here’s a quick
snapshot of what's happening this fall.

We are in the midst of programming this
year’s festival and at the moment the slate
is looking very exciting, featuring new
projects by some of Canada’s hottest writers.
In Play Development, we are pleased to
welcome Anusree Roy, our OAC Playwright
in Residence, and Damien Atkins, our
Canada Council Playwright in Residence,
to the Company. Anusree and Damien
are working on fantastic new plays with
Consulting Dramaturge Iris Turcott over the
course of the year. Iris continues to read
piles of unsolicited scripts that come in
every month, as well as work on new plays
by Judith Thompson, Ed Roy, and a new
one-woman show by Nicola Cavendish, in
addition to her dramaturgical work across
the country. The RAW! RAW! RAW! Festival
of New Work (from December 5 –13) will
bring emerging projects to life as we

and Anusree Roy. New this year, the artists
will be developing projects while in their
residency in addition to participating
in an array of professional development
activities. The GYM Emerging Artist
Program continues to grow every day,
with membership now surpassing 150
emerging artists. In a new GYM initiative,
we welcomed four emerging companies as
the inaugural GYM TEAMS: Gym Program
Resident Companies and we recently had
our first PLAY IN A DAY, a 24-hour play
creation adventure overnight at Berkeley
Street, kicking off the new season.
Speaking of new initiatives, we have
proudly launched the Visionaries Council,
a membership-driven initiative that engages
young professionals in the theatre of The
Canadian Stage Company. The Council
enables access to senior leaders, new
social circles and leadership opportunities,
which cultivate new relationships, broaden
horizons and contribute to the dynamism of
the cultural life of Toronto. The Visionaries
Council recently had its official Launch
Party at THE SPOKE CLUB; we have a
number of exciting events lined up, and
membership is growing every day!
This summer, we expanded our Education
and Community Arts activities to include
some exciting new components and
partnerships with local organizations. Ravi
Jain has officially started as our Community
Arts Associate for the 08.09 Season. Ravi
was in our BASH! Program last year and is
an acclaimed director, producer and truly
exceptional artist making a big splash in
the community arts and the professional
arts community. Ravi will be heading up
our new Young Company as well as working
with us to build new community arts
initiatives year round.
We announced five new Youth Programs:
the Young Company, the Innovators Creation
Program, Lines: Emerging Writers Program,
The Shop Production and Design Program,
and the cheapTHRILLS Youth Access Pass,
offering youth under 24 outstanding access,
education and training opportunities with
the artists of Canadian Stage.
Our Educator Advisory has expanded to
include the following educators: Brendon
Allen, The Bishop Strachan School and
Upper Canada College; Anne-Louise
Bannon, Marshall McLuhan Catholic
Secondary School; Sarah Green, Bloor
Collegiate Institute; Kirsty Irvine, Unionville
Secondary School; Christine Jackson,
Arts Program Coordinator, TDSB; Michael
Limerick, Monarch Park Collegiate Institute;
Laurence Siegel, Retired Educator; and
Sally Spofforth, Marc Garneau Collegiate
Institute. In addition to our newly published
Study Guides and our Educator Preview
Nights, we are currently working with our
Advisory to plan our upcoming Educator
Professional Development Workshop: The
Artist Educator Exchange, which will be at
Berkeley Street on Saturday November 29.
There are some exciting evolutions to our
Theatre Club Program this year — see this
month’s Spotlight On section to read more
about our partnerships with Nicholas Hoare,
Random House Canada and the inaugural
Canadian Stage Reads selection The Ghost
by Robert Harris.
Also, we hope you will join us for our
special Family Days for It’s a Wonderful
Life on Saturday Dec 6 and Saturday
Dec 13 at the Bluma Appel Theatre. Like
our Family Nights at the Dream, we will
be creating a special workshop experience
featuring a backstage tour, artist-led
activities, crafts and other family-friendly
fun events that will be offered from
10 am – noon on those Saturday mornings.

During the California taping in
that spring of 1977, I thought of
Nixon as Proteus, the mythological
Greek god, who possessed all
the wizard wiles, who was well
protected by guards and by cunning,
and who, when threatened, could
miraculously change shapes.
In David Frost, we had the most
unlikely Odysseus. His job, as
the legend said, was to “catch
and pin Proteus down.” He had
a daunting task.
The Legacy

Interviews
Richard Nixon had dragged the
country through two years of agony
over his Watergate transgressions.
His abuses of the presidential
office, his obstruction of justice,
his impeachable offences had
become perfectly clear to the
American people. Just as he was on
the verge of being impeached by
the U.S. House of Representatives
and then tried and formally
removed from office by the U.S.
Senate for High Crimes and
Misdemeanors, he had abruptly
resigned. His successor, President Gerald
Ford, promptly pardoned him, ensuring that
the disgraced President would never stand before the bar of justice.
The Frost/Nixon Interviews of 1977 would be the only trial for Watergate that Nixon would
ever have. As such, they were freighted with enormous historical significance. It was my
job to prepare David Frost for his Watergate interrogation, and I felt the weight of our
historic responsibility intensely. The stakes were immense. Frost was paying Nixon more
than a million dollars for the privilege of the interrogation, and so the morality of “cheque
cy of

book journalism” was much
discussed. Nixon undoubtedly saw
the enterprise as a sweetheart deal.
He stood to make a lot of money
and to rehabilitate his reputation
in the bargain. Through Frost,
he surely hoped to show that the
country had made a mistake. But
he underestimated the great skill
of his adversary.
It is no wonder that this exceedingly
dramatic confrontation remains
the most-watched public affairs
programme in the history of
television. The project had
elements of Greek theatre: the
disgraced leader in combat with
the fading entertainer, each trying
to use the other to resuscitate
his career and his legacy. From
their intimate and yet so public
encounter, only one winner
could emerge.
Would the Grand Inquisitor be
able to coax from the Master of
Deception a sincere confession
of crime and an authentic apology to
the nation? How could he accomplish this,
when so many before him had failed?
After a series of disappointments, David Frost surprised us all. When it was over, more than
two thirds of the viewers felt Nixon was guilty of obstruction of justice and an equal number
thought he had lied during the interviews. Television had vindicated the decision of the nation.

author of The Conviction of Richard Nixon: The Untold Story of the Frost/Nixon Interviews.
