Sunni Islam
The Sunnis view the Mahdi as the successor of Muhammad, but, unlike most Shia
muslims, do not believe the Mahdi has already been born.[10] The Mahdi is
expected to arrive to rule the world and to reestablish righteousness

In Islamic eschatology, the Mahdi (/ˈmɑːdi/; Arabic:

English: Guided One) is the prophesied redeemer of Islam who will rule for seven,
nine or nineteen years (according to differing interpretations)[1] before the Day of
Judgment (yawm al-qiyamah / literally, the Day of Resurrection)[2] and will rid the
world of evil.[3]
There is no explicit reference to the Mahdi in the Qu'ran, but references to him are
found in hadith (the reports and traditions of Muhammad's teachings collected after
his death). According to Islamic tradition, the Mahdi's tenure will coincide with the
Second Coming of Jesus Christ (Isa), who is to assist the Mahdi against the Masih
ad-Dajjal (literally, the "false Messiah" or Antichrist).[4] Differences exist in the
concept of the Mahdi between Sunni muslims and adherents of the Shia tradition.
For Sunnis, the Mahdi is Muhammad's successor who is yet to come. For most
Shia muslims, the Mahdi was born but disappeared and will remain hidden from
humanity until he reappears to bring justice to the world, a doctrine known as the
Occultation. For Twelver Shia this "hidden Imam" is Muhammad al-Mahdi, the
Twelfth Imam.
Throughout history, various individuals have claimed to be the Mahdi. These have
included Muhammad Jaunpuri, founder of the Mahdavia sect, the Báb (Siyyid Ali
Muhammad) founder of Bábism, Muhammad Ahmad, who established the Mahdist
state in Sudan in the late 19th century and Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, founder of the
Ahmadiyya sect.
An imam (Arabic:
imām, plural: ‫ أئ مة‬aʼimmah; Persian: ‫ )ا‬is an Islamic
leadership position. It is most commonly in the context of a worship leader of a
mosque and Muslim community by Sunni Muslims. In this context, Imams may
lead Islamic worship services, serve as community leaders, and provide religious
guidance. For Shi'a Muslims, the Imam has a more central meaning and role in
Islam through the concept of Imamah. Imam may also be used in the form of a title
for renowned Muslim scholars.
Isa – (their Jesus) Ibn Maryam ( Arabic: ‫ع ي سى‬, translit.: ʿĪsā ), known as Jesus
in the New Testament, is considered to be a Messenger of God.
The belief that Jesus is a prophet is required in Islam, as it is for all prophets
named in the Qur’an. This is reflected in the fact that he is clearly a significant
figure in the Qur’an (appearing in 93 ayaat [or, verses]), though Noah, Adam and
Moses appear with even greater frequency.[
Jesus is seen in Islam as a precursor to Muhammad, and is believed by Muslims to
have foretold the latter's coming.[6][7]
They do not believe Jesus is God or God’s Son. They do not believe He died on
the cross, they just say God raised Him up to heaven. They do not believe in the
Trinity, only in a monotheism which is one God.

According to Islamic tradition which describes this graphically, Jesus' descent will be in the
midst of wars fought by al-Mahdi (lit. "the rightly guided one"), known in Islamic eschatology as
the redeemer of Islam, against al-Masīh ad-Dajjāl (the Antichrist "False messiah") and his
followers.[27] Jesus will descend at the point of a white arcade, east of Damascus, dressed in
yellow robes—his head anointed. He will say prayer behind al-Mahdi then join him in his war
against the Dajjal. Jesus, considered as a Muslim, will abide by the Islamic teachings.
Eventually, Jesus will slay the Antichrist, and then everyone who is one of the People of the
Book (ahl al-kitāb, referring to Jews and Christians) will believe in him. Thus, there will be one
community, that of Islam.[28][29]
