ALEXIAN ADVANCED M EDICINE Winter, 2007 IN THIS ISSUE: Survivor Focus Calendar of Events A Life Enriched A Moment with Mina What is Up With Your Genes for Cancer BUNCO for Cancer I t was a magical evening on Saturday, October 14, 2006 when very special friends of The Cancer Institute at Alexian Brothers put on Bunco for Cancer…A Fundraiser for Cancer Families. The Cockrell Dining Room at Harper College was aglow with raffle prizes, silent auction items, Swarovski crystal bracelets and earrings and great food. 250 attendees enjoyed playing games of Bunco. The evening began with an announcement about out new Mammacare facility,The Alexian Brothers Robin Trioani MammaCare Training Center. Robin Troiani has spearheaded this new program that instructs doctors, healthcare professionals and the entire community to a more comprehensive way to do a breast exam. When the lights dimmed, a tree holding candles that were personalized with names of loved ones was lit and all listened to Bette Midler sing “You Are The Wind Beneath My Wings.” It was a very special moment. This event began when Nancy McKnight, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago, prayed for God to send her some very special friends. He heard her prayers and answered them three-fold and sent her the most wonderful friends in the world. Instead of honoring her, she asked that they put on a fundraiser to help others afflicted with cancer. Collectively they have raised over $83,000 in the past three years for the Life Enrichment Center, which allows us to continue to run our programs free of charge! We cannot thank this dynamic team enough for their kindness and generosity.Their giving spirit exemplifies the mission of the Alexian Brothers and we are soo blessed they have been in our lives. They truly are the wind beneath our wings! God bless to each and every one of you and thank you to everyone who attended and made this fundraiser such a great success! New MammaCare Training Center n December 14, 2006 we celebrated the opening of a new service and O center, The Alexian Brothers Robin Troiani MammaCare Training Center located at 25 E. Schaumburg Road. Robin Troiani, one of our own Alexian Brothers nurses developed and researched this new idea and with the help of Debbie Williams, Breast Health Specialist, it became a reality.Alexian Brothers Hospital Network is only one of four sites in the United States that offers this training. The MammaCare method of clinical and self-breast exams provides the most effective and thorough breast examination available. Certified instructors conduct the courses for professionals as well as the community. MammaCare began in 1974 as a research project supported by the National Cancer Institute. The researchers created breast models with structures simulating the nodules in a woman’s breast. They then developed simulated lesions that feel very similar to the type of lumps surgeons consider suspicious. Finally a training program was developed that became the most effective and thorough way of examing breast tissue. If you are a professional and interested in learning more about this new and exciting technique please contact us at 847-537-4260. If you are a community member and are interested in learning this technique we offer free classes, review the newsletter calendar for dates, times and locations and then call 1866-ALEXIAN to register. Massage Therapy assage therapy has become an muscular, circulatory, M important part of general healthcare immune and nervous for many people living in today’s stressful systems. world. Cancer patients experience more physical and emotional stress than the average person and that is why we offer massage therapy, free of charge, for all cancer patients that receive care at any of our facilities. Massage therapy is a hands-on manipulation of the soft tissue and joints of the body. Massage has many diverse physiological effects, which are primarily due to the therapist moving over the body. The different movements can physically stretch muscles and ligaments and encourage the circulation through the tissue, inhibit muscular spasms and be sedating or stimulating to the nervous system. The therapeutic use of massage by a registered therapist affects all the systems in the body-in particular, the Our massage therapist performs an initial evaluation for cancer patients who David Zilic may benefit from our Lymphadema Control Program. The therapist does massage to eliminate excessive swelling in extremities effected by lymph node removal or trauma. He will evaluate and set up a home care plan for the patient to help deal with pain and swelling.Another type of massage beneficial to our patients is scar tissue massage. This technique is used to minimize decrease range of motion and other restrictions of the body due to surgery. Traditional healthcare systems throughout the world recognize that therapeutic massage can play a large role in treating illness or chronic ailments, and contribute to a higher sense of well being. With the ever-expanding research on the benefits of medical massage, more professionals are advising patients to include this form of therapy in their healthcare treatment plans. According to recent studies, massage therapy significantly improves cancer patients’ symptoms, such as pain, nausea, fatigue and depression. It is a non-invasive and inexpensive means of symptom control for patients with serious chronic illnesses. It is comforting, free of side effects and greatly appreciated by recipients. We offer massage therapy appointments at both Life Enrichment Centers, on the Alexian Brothers and St.Alexius Medical Centers’ campuses. If you would like to get more information about massage therapy or would like to set up an appointment with David Zilic, please call 1-888-466-6011. A Moment With Mina…… BRRRRRR!!!! Early Detection Saved My Life! y name is Martha Swierczewski. I am a wife, mother, grandmother, retired teacher, and as of August 29, 2006, a lung cancer survivor. As someone who had smoked for a number of years, I worried about being at risk for lung cancer. When I visited an Alexian Brothers facility for knee therapy, I saw a brochure for the Breathe Easy Lung Screen, a diagnostic test that could detect lung cancer at a very early stage. Even though I was healthy and had no symptoms of any kind, I decided that I should have this test. I had my first scan on May 1, 2006. Within a week I received the test results from my primary physician’s nurse and from Alexian’s thoracic oncology coordinator Sue Abbinanti. The scan revealed a small, non-specific density—a nodule. I was devastated by the news and frustrated with the radiologist’s recommendation to wait three months before being retested. Three months to the day,August 1, 2006, I had my second lung scan. Once again Sue Abbinanti called with the results. She gently informed me that the nodule had grown slightly and had M characteristics consistent with cancer. Aware of my acute distress, Sue sensed that I wanted to be aggressive with my treatment. With my approval, she arranged a consultation for me with Dr. Molly McAfee, head of Alexian’s Thoracic Oncology Program. Dr. McAfee discussed my risk factors with me and the nature of the nodule. She informed me that I could either wait another three months, at which time a biopsy might be more viable, or I could have the nodule removed as soon as possible. I told her that I wanted to deal with it immediately. Within weeks, with my family’s support and encouragement, Dr. McAfee performed a video-assisted thoracoscopy—a state of the art surgical approach to cancers of the lung.A pathologist was present and confirmed that the nodule was malignant. With that finding, Dr. McAfee continued with a procedure to remove the upper lobe of my left lung. Today my prognosis is excellent, and it is due to early detection. My advice is that you must be your own advocate and trust your intuition. If you are a former smoker or are at risk for any reason, have the lung screen. Today my prognosis is excellent, and it is due to early detection. My advice is that you must be your own advocate and trust your intuition. However, this is undeniably the season that reminds us God never promised us that life would be easy or fair, but He did assure us that we would not have to walk this journey alone and that is the gift to be most thankful for. In that spirit of gratitude, I write what I know. I know that no matter how great the grief, fear, or loss may be, that the sun will rise tomorrow and that the human spirit will rise to greet it. I know that the battles of the body can be harsh, but the mind is kind and helps us to filter what we can accept. I know that it was far easier for me to start chemotherapy than it was to wait for test results, just as it was easier for my sister-in-law to be questioned than it is for her to wait for answers, because being proactive is easier than doing nothing. I know that the support of family and friends is God’s answer to the inevitable evil that is a part of every life. I know that some questions will remain unanswered. My life is enriched by the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, and the wisdom to change the things I can. I know that when there are not words to comfort, a hug says it all. I wish you all many hugs this upcoming year. ne of the fundamental principles of writing is ‘Write what you know.’ Unfortunately, as I sit to write this article I feel I have far more questions of what I don’t know than a true sense of what I do know. One week ago today, my brother-in-law was killed in front of his own home. We search for answers. What is in the mind and soul of someone who seemingly has no respect for human life? How does a family move on after such devastating grief? How do we quiet the fears? How do mothers and fathers say goodbye to their children as they leave for Iraq? How do any of us reconcile with the pain of death, sickness, and loss that invariably enters all of our lives at a time when we least expect it? Mother Teresa has been quoted as saying,“God does not give us more than we can handle.” but I find myself asking,‘Does He really need to trust us quite this much?’ So, how does God respond? He sends us Thanksgiving followed by the most celebrated of all holidays of Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza, and Ramadan. This may seem like a hollow response to the family who just buried a love one, O Whats is Up With Your Genes Hereditary Colorectal Cancer measures in HNPCC, there can be up to a 56% reduction of risk in colorectal cancer and a similar reduction in colorectal cancer mortality.Women with an HNPCC mutation must also undergo increased screening for their risks of endometrial and ovarian cancers. Individuals who benefit from a genetic risk assessment are those with a personal/family history of: • Colorectal cancer diagnosed before age 50 • Endometrial cancer diagnosed before age 50 • 2 or moren caerre dtaH lsincluding C -N P (gastric, ovarian ureter/renal pelvis, biliary tract, small bowel, pancreatic, brain, and sebaceous adenoma) in an individual or family • Relatives of an HNPCC mutation carrier First degree relatives are at a 50% risk to carry the same mutation. Once a mutation has been detected in a family, other family members can be tested for the specific family mutation. You can determine the chance of an MLH, MSH2or MSH6 mutation based upon your personal and family history. Please call Tinamarie Bauman, RN, MSN,APNG at (847) 755-3273 for more information or a personal risk assessment. ereditary colorectal cancer is underdiagnosed. H In the United States as many as 1 in 400 people carry a mutation in one of the genes responsible for hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer, yet most of them do not know it.Without proper screening most of these mutations carriers will develop colorectal cancer (CRC) during their lifetime. Genetic testing is available through The Cancer Institute at Alexian Brothers Hospital Network to accurately identify mutation carriers. The most common type of inherited colorectal cancer is hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) also known as “Lynch Syndrome”.The majority of HNPCC is due to mutations in one of three genes: MLH1, MSH2 or MSH6. HNPCC mutation carriers have up to an 82% chance to develop colorectal cancer by age 70.Women with an HNPCC mutation have up to a 71% chance to develop endometrial cancer and up to a 12% chance to develop ovarian cancer by age 70. It is recommended that HNPCC mutation carriers start colonoscopies at an earlier age (2025 years) and have them more frequently (every 1-2 years). Studies have shown that with appropriate preventative 4 New at the Cancer Institute! Cancer Institute at Alexian Tto heBrothers Hospital Network is excited offer to its cancer patients the use of our Patient Navigation Services. These are individuals or “navigators” who are trained to help cancer patients through the sometimes confusing and complex health care system. Cancer patients are provided with one-on-one attention from a navigator that guides them through their cancer journey. The complexity of care and treatment options throughout someone’s cancer journey requires better patient education and preparation. Patients and their families expect timely access to comprehensive cancer treatment, as well as efficient referral processes throughout our community. The navigator can help with all of these things. He/she can also help by anticipating and avoiding potential barriers of care: financial, communication, information and transportation. The navigator helps newly diagnosed patients, those undergoing treatment as well as those needing follow up or palliative care. The Cancer Institute at Alexian Brothers Hospital Network has Patient Navigators to assist you through your cancer experience. If you would like more information regarding these Patient Navigators please contact us at 1-888-466-6011. The Volunteer Vibe he volunteers welcomed Georgia to our group in October.
