Prison Bodies: Bruce Halton from Marion Federal Prison Camp in Marion, IL came into prison at a skinny 135lbs. Now, almost 4 years later, he weighs a muscular 152 with a 225lb shoulder press and 305lb bench press. Bruce wants the MD readers to know that you don’t need great genetics to put on muscle and shed body fat. He’s living proof! Tyson Isaac, 26 years old, from the Federal Correctional Institution in Big Spring, TX, believes that “with the right attitude, you can have the body of your dreams no matter how limited your nourishment is.’ In the last 4 years of training, Tyson’s weight has approached the 200lb mark, his arms stretch the tape to an unbelievable 22 inches, and his bench press is an even more impressive 435lbs. With stats like that, who are we to argue with Big Tyson? Jason Paradisi came to the federal prison system almost 8 years ago as an overweight, pill addicted, alcoholic. With a total cholesterol level of 249 and triglycerides approaching 1800, Jason decided to make a change in his life. He transformed his “lumpy” 240 pound body into a ripped 187 pound muscle machine. Despite the fact that Jason still has many more years of incarceration left in his sentence; he now has invaluable insights into what differentiates the average Joe from the streetwise success story Knowledge! Art Martinez sent in this photo from FCI Taft in Taft, CA. His shredded 135 pound physique at 5’5” tall is an incredible feat considering that there are no free weights or machines in his facility. Calisthenics and cardio created quite an impressive physique. Way to go Art! At 5’10”, 208lbs, with 12% body fat; 29year old Rob Gonzales of the Hale Creek Correctional Facility in Johnstown, NY will be continuing his career as a NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) certified trainer when he’s released. A loyal reader of MD for the past 5 years, Rob also looks forward to resuming his quest to one day stand on a competitive bodybuilding stage. Any prison inmates (state or federal) who think they’re worthy of appearing in MD, send your photos and story to: Dave Palumbo P.O. Female bodybuilding update: Hailing from the “city of brotherly love” (Philadelphia, PA), the exotic and beautiful Carrie Simmons started training back in 1994 when her former bodybuilding boyfriend bought her a membership to a local gym. The day she first entered that facility, she weighed a paltry 105lbs and could barely squat the 45lb bar; however, she distinctly remembers, from that moment, that bodybuilding was an instant love.
Although she had a small stint as a kickboxer, and even dabbled in Fitness competitions, her desire to emulate the physiques of Lenda Murray, Sharon Bruneau, and Tonya Knight swayed her toward bodybuilding. Carrie decided to take off the entire 2004 competition season to concentrate on putting on enough muscle size to compete as a true bodybuilder and in November of 2005, Carrie entered her first bodybuilding competition, the 2006 NPC Eastern USA, and placed a respectable 3 rd . It was at this contest that I first met Carrie and convinced her that with the proper coaching, she could easily be a top nationallevel competitor. Under my tutelage, five short months later, Carrie captured the women’s middleweight and overall title at the 2006 NPC New York Metropolitan Bodybuilding Championships and two weeks after that placed second at her first nationallevel competition; the 2006 NPC JR USA. According to Carrie, “My aspirations in the sport are to constantly keep improving. Trophies are great and a Pro card would be even better, but I am happy if each time I step on stage, I just beat me.” Anabolic Freak of the Month: NAME: Justin Harris AGE: 26 HEIGHT: 5'10" WEIGHT: 245lbs (competition) EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: B.A. in Kinesiology from Alma College in Michigan. PROFESSION: Echocardiographer at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan. SPORTS BACKGROUND: Twotime small college AllAmerican in football at Alma College. CONTEST HISTORY: 2003 NPC Midwestern State 4th Heavyweight 2004 NPC Capital City Classic 1st Heavyweight and overall 2004 NPC Michigan State Championships 1st heavyweight and overall 2005 NPC Jr. Nationals 15th Super HW 2006 NPC Jr. USA 1st Super HW When the Super Heavyweight class took the stage at the 2006 NPC JR USA Bodybuilding Championships, all eyes were glued on the man with the shredded glutes. Realizing that a new standout had finally emerged from the rather uneventful Super Heavyweight class, as of late, I scrambled backstage in search of the mystery man. What I encountered was a very wellspoken, gracious, individual by the name of Justin Harris. According to Harris, he picked up his first weight when he was only 15 years old; however he didn’t step foot onto a bodybuilding stage until he was nearly 23 years old. From my brief conversation with him, it’s readily apparent that Justin takes great pride in the knowledge he accrued while earning a degree in Kinesiology from Alma College in
his home state of Michigan. Unlike many other bodybuilders, Justin has put his educational training to good use as both an Echocardiologist at William Beaumont Hospital and as a contest prep adviser to numerous bodybuilders around the country. To create even more of a unique niche for himself, at only 26 years old, Justin has started his own supplement company—TROPONIN NUTRITION. He tells me that he has a kick ass anticramping formula called CRAMPEX and an herbal diuretic formula called DRYSHRED. Feel free to check out his products and contest photos at www.troponinnutrition.com. Finally, Justin would like that thank his wonderful wife, Jorie, who is currently in her second year of Dental School, and his lovely daughter Lydia for supporting him in all his bodybuilding endeavors. Rumor has it that the happy couple has another child due sometime in October. Best of luck! Charlie Arms Update: On April 15, 2006, 62year old Charlie Arms was officially declared the best 60+ male bodybuilder in the world. He picked up his first place trophy and $1000 check at the 2006 IFBB Pro Masters World Championships in New York City, NY. This victory came on the heels of two NPC Masters Nationals 60+ Overall Championships. One look at Charlie’s incredible physique and it’s quite apparent why no human over the age of 60 stands a chance against him. His combination of hard freaky muscle, incredible determination, and unparalleled work ethic has enabled him to rewrite all the proverbial rule books with regard to age. What’s even more amazing is that he never competed in a single bodybuilding competition until he turned sixty. That, alone, has to be some kind of record. Think about it, who’d make a better spokesperson for the American Academy of Anti Aging than this guy? QUESTION: Dave, why is protein so important to a bodybuilder. After all, the FDA claims that we need significantly less protein than most of us eat. What’s the real story? ANSWER: To the bodybuilder and athlete alike, dietary protein is a precious commodity. When broken down into its fundamental building blocks—amino acids—protein can be utilized for the synthesis of peptide hormones (such as GH, insulin, thyroid hormone, and IGF1), digestive enzymes, hair and nail protein (keratin), and most importantly, new muscle tissue. The problem with ingested protein is that there is no desirable storage facility in the body for use when amino acids are scarce. Fatty acids are stored in adipose cells and carbohydrates (as glycogen) in muscle and liver cells; however, the body’s only available resource for amino acids is skeletal muscle cells. As amino acid levels drop in the bloodstream (which occurs every 3 to 3 ½ hours after a protein meal), the body begins to cannibalize precious, hardearned, muscle tissue to harvest the necessary amino acids. When this occurs, the body is said to be catabolic in a state of breakdown. For the bodybuilder wishing to optimize muscle gains, this becomes a very undesirable scenario.
To ensure that muscle gains progress only in the positive direction, I suggest consuming 68 small meals (3050g protein per feeding) per day. This practice not only secures an anabolic (or positive nitrogen) state, it also provides the body with the essential raw materials needed to build additional lean muscle tissue—the obvious goal of all weight trainers, young or old. QUESTION: Dave, I have a somewhat unusual question. Have you or anyone you know ever noticed any type of side effect or reaction immediately after giving yourself an injection? For the first time in 20 years of steroid cycling, after my last shot, I felt a wave of dizziness, nausea, and slight coughing. I took 2 IU of GH intravenously and 400 mg of trenbolone intramuscularly (IM). I also take 1mg of Arimidex, daily. My steroid injections and the Arimidex are all done within 1015 minutes of each other. Any ideas or suggestions of what’s going on would be greatly appreciated. Also, when I injected Winstrol and Equipoise into my delt, blood was squirting out like crazy. What’s going on with me? ANSWER: The laws of probability with regard to steroid usage suggests that if they’re used over a long enough period of time (in your case, twenty years), there’s a very good chance that you will, eventually, experience every potential mishap and side effect. First off, dizziness, nausea, and coughing is a typical acute side effect of trenbolone acetate and testosterone cypionate usage. For some reason, when either of these two compounds are injected (especially into the upper body musculature), a strange odor can be smelt which can have the effect of causing nausea and dizziness. Additionally, this “odor” which is actually a chemical being exhaled from the lungs seems to impede the lung’s ability to absorb oxygen. It is this gagging effect that lead to the dry hacking cough you describe. From all the experts I’ve spoken to, it seems that these exhaled fumes are actually a component of the trenbolone acetate or testosterone cypionate—perhaps the preservative. Further evidence in support of this theory is the fact that this coughing reaction seems to occur more frequently the closer the intramuscular injections occur to the lungs. Gluteal injections don’t seem to cause this coughing fit as severely as deltoid injections do. With regard to “squirting blood”, whenever an intramuscular injection is administered, there is always the possibility that a small vessel will be “nicked”. If this occurs, it causes localized bleeding within the target muscle belly. When the bolus of oil is then injected into the damaged region, tremendous back pressure is created and when the needle is withdrawn, the leaking blood is forced out of the open hole that was created by the needle. This sequence of events is what leads to the “blood squirting” spectacle that most bodybuilders have experienced at one time or another. Luckily, since the oil (steroidal compound) was injected deep into the muscle, the only thing that shoots out of the muscle is fresh blood from the damaged vessel.
QUESTION: Dave, are you ever going to create your own supplement line? I’ve been waiting a long time to buy supplements from the man who tells it like it is. ANSWER: To be quite honest, I’ve been working on a line of nutritional products for the past few years now. During this time, I’ve been methodically testing different nutritional ingredients on several of the bodybuilders and figure athletes that I assist with contest preparation and I‘m happy to say that I’ve finally assembled several extremely effective products that are unlike any other currently on the market. When I originally began this quest, I vowed never to create a copycat product. Every one of my formulations will be scientifically sound and will offer healthy, effective, alternatives to the current crop of supplements that have been around for years. I can’t really give you too much information at this time; however, I’ll leave you with one juicy morsel. The company’s name is SPECIES; and I promise it will live up to its namesake! QUESTION: I’m a female fitness competitor and I’m currently on a contest diet where I’m taking clenbuterol, Cytomel, and Nolvadex. The problem is that I am experiencing terrible calf and foot cramping at night. What should I do? ANSWER: Nightly cramping can happen for a number of reasons. Assuming you aren’t taking any diuretics (you haven’t indicated that you are), the most likely scenarios are sodium depletion, calcium/magnesium imbalance, or clenbuterolrelated side effects. Sodium is the most prevalent electrolyte in the human body. The RDA (recommended daily allowance) for sodium is 2400mg per day, however, be aware that this dosage is the minimum that you require to ward off serious deficiency. A low sodium diet coupled with excessive sweating can easily lead to sodium deficiency. Add in a low carbohydrate diet (which minimizes sodium and fluid retention) and excessive water intake and what we have is a recipe for disaster. If cramping or muscle weakness is occurring with increased frequency, try to increase sodium consumption through the use of sugarfree soy sauces and salted foods. While Calcium plays a vital role in muscle contraction, Magnesium plays an important role in muscle relaxation and helping to reduce muscle spasm and tension. When Calcium flows into muscle cells, it causes them to contract; then, when the Calcium is replaced by Magnesium, the muscle relaxes. Muscle spasms and tremors may therefore be associated with low levels of Magnesium. I would suggest supplementing with a balanced Calcium/Magnesium formula first. If that doesn’t work, then try a pure Magnesium supplement. Clenbuterol has been shown to increase muscle contractility which is probably why it increases muscle strength so significantly. When muscles contract with greater force, the chances for cramping and slight muscle tears also increase. Typical cramping associated with clenbuterol usage occurs in the platysma muscle (neck) when yawning, hamstring muscles when climbing out of bed, and foot and calf muscles when rising onto
the balls of the feet. The best remedy for this uncomfortable situation is to ingest the naturally occurring alkaloid, quinine. The ingestion of 60120 mg oral quinine sulfate taken 1 hour before bed should all but eliminate any nighttime cramping that you are experiencing. If you cannot readily locate quinine pills or if the situation is an emergency, you can always drive down to your local supermarket and purchase sugar free tonic water; a wellknown naturally occurring source of quinine. QUESTION: My friend and I have a bet. He says that Humalog is the fastest acting insulin available. I say it’s Novolog. Who’s right? ANSWER: I hate to break it to you but you’re both wrong! Within the last year or so, a new rapidacting insulin known as APIDRA ® has been released by Sanofi Aventis. APIDRA ® (insulin glulisine [rDNA origin]) differs from regular human insulin by its rapid onset of action and shorter duration of action. When used as a mealtime insulin, the dose of Apidra ® should be given within 15 minutes before starting a meal. I’m predicting that Apidra will rapidly replace Humalog and Novalog (Novalog is slightly faster than Humalog) as the insulin of choice for bodybuilders who are looking to carb up (precontest) or to speed recovery after grueling workouts (offseason). When attempting to carbohydrate load using Apidra, I suggest taking small, 3 IU, injections with every other meal. Meals should consist of about 35 grams of carbohydrates, 40 grams of protein, and 20 grams of fat. QUESTION: I’m a competitive powerlifter who has lots of trouble making weight. What’s the best anabolic cycle I can take for maximum strength gains with minimal water retention? ANSWER: I would suggest sticking to compounds that don’t aromatize since estrogen notoriously results in excessive fluid retention. Likewise, I would avoid compounds such as GH, IGF1, and insulin since they, too, will drive your bodyweight upwards. Anavar and Winstrol are both extremely anabolic compounds that will speed recovery from workouts while minimizing fluid retention. Anavar also has the added benefit of being a terrific strength drug. Halotestin, despite being an extremely androgenic compound, doesn’t aromatize and thus won’t cause any bloating or weight gain; however, it will push aggression and strength gains through the roof—a very desirable scenario for competitive powerlifters. It’s important to note that Halotestin has very weak anabolic (musclebuilding) effects and is extremely toxic; therefore, its use should be curtailed to no long than 8 weeks. Finally, clenbuterol is included in this cycle since it’s a great nonsteroidal fat burning drug that has, as an added bonus, a tremendous strengthboosting effect. Keep in
mind that the following cycle will exhibit some significant toxicity; therefore, it’s important to finish up this protocol with at least 68 weeks of drugfree lifting.
