REPAIR SOLUTIONS
SmartStart: Solid State Starter
Better hydraulic motor control performance
demanding less power, maintenance and space
SmartStart is a fully integrated starter that reliably controls voltage and current for hydraulic
elevator pump motor applications. Standard features include a reverse phase sensor,
adjustable trip class electronic overload protection, fault contactor, configurable auxiliary
contacts, multiple start/stop modes, and increased motor/system diagnostics.
Applications
•
Large horsepower motors
•
High elevator usage (high number of
starts per hour)
•
Retrofit on existing installations with
motor/contactor failure history
•
Power company line-current restrictions
From any angle, SmartStart delivers value:
•
Controller space is at a premium
Reliability — no contacts to replace saves material, labor and downtime costs; overcurrent
protection extends motor life while maximizing maintenance intervals.
Benefits
Efficiency — low starting current with adjustable acceleration ramp eliminates high
in-rush current.
•
Increased system performance
•
Maintenance not required
•
Compact, space-saving footprint
Versatility — replaces across-the-line, resistance start, wye-delta and increment/part
winding starting schemes with no additional space requirement.
•
Increased system flexibility
•
Decreased downtime
Precision — up-to-speed contact feature determines exactly when to connect load to motor
for smooth, trouble-free ride.
•
Easy to purchase, install and set up
Features
The streamlined
SmartStart footprint is almost 70%
smaller than leading
competitive starters.

•
Eliminates motor damage resulting from
contactor welding
•
Limits line disturbances from in-rush currents
•
Eliminates inspection and replacement
of contacts
•

SmartStart: Solid State Starter
SmartStart specifications
Solid State Starter
Current range
6.3–85A (3-Lead Motor), 10.9–147A (6-Lead Motor)
Voltage range
200–600 VAC 50/60Hz
Control voltage
120 VAC
Starting modes
Soft start
Reduced space, high functionality
SmartStart is a simple replacement for existing
mechanical starter applications. SmartStart provides
for 3, 6, 9 or 12 lead motor winding terminations with
no major wiring change necessary.
Current limit start
High current rating in compact design
Kick start
Features
Overload protection
Fault diagnostics
Flexibility in trip class
(10, 15, 20 or OFF)
Overtemperature in power section
Connects to the motor using the inside-the-delta
(√3 factor) wiring configuration, allowing the
compact design of SmartStart to accommodate
a higher motor amp rating.
Phase reversal
Selectable overload reset
(Manual or Automatic)
Transitionless motor starting
Phase loss/Open load
SmartStart uses a current limit starting method
to eliminate the transition current spike found in StarDelta applications. This greatly reduces mechanical
and electrical shock to the motor and is especially
important when power supplies are limited.
Shorted SCRs
Phase imbalance
(enable/disable switch)
Compact size with true 3-phase control
Integrated bypass contacts minimize heat
generation during run-time. The bypass
automatically closes when the motor reaches
its nominal speed, resulting in a cooler-running
component and reduction in starter size.

DIP switches allow for easy, precise and secure
setting of the start/stop profile, overload trip class
and auxiliary contact characteristics.
Setting the overload FLA is easily accomplished using
the rotary pot located on the front of the device.
