TROUBLE SI{OOTING
No build up of voltage: With generator running at operating speed, check the residualvoltage at 1
and 2 on the VR504A-21ODCterminalstrip. The voltage shouldbe more than 3 volts ac. lf the volta_oe
is belowthis value, removethe exciter fields from the regulatorand momentarilyapply 1Z vdc to
them while the generatoris runningat speed. The voltage at i and 2 at the voltage regulatorshould
increaseto a much highervalue duringthis test. lf the voltage does not increaseto a rnuchhigher
value, checkall wiringand fusingthat leadto th€ regulatorfor open circuits.
lf the voltage at 1 and 2 on the voltage regulatorincreasesduringthe test, this could indicatethat the
regulatoris darnagedor defective or the internal fuses have blown.
lf the line voltage did not increaseon the generatorwhen the exciter fields were connectedto the 12
vcic, there is an internaiproblemin the generatorsuch as an open exciterfield, shortedor open diodes
in the rectifier bank, open i'oior or biowrrstaior'.
After this test, disconnectthe 12 vdc from the exciterfields and re- connectthe field leadsio the
regulator. Makesure that the lead that was connectedto the positiveof the I2 volts is connectedto 3
and the leadthat was connectedto negativeis connectedto 4 on the voltage regulator.
Runthe generatorup to speed. Go aheadand set up the regulatoras previouslydescribed. lf there is no
buildup and the residualvoltage at 1 and 2 is still too low, changethe input voltage to 24O or ?77 vac
which shoulddoublethe residualvoltage at 1 and 2. lf when hookedup with a ?4O vac input, if the
residualis still too low for build up, then an external flashing circuit will have to be installed.
Minor flickering of voltage: P3 is not set far enough cw. With generator disconnected from
load, slowlyturn P3 cw until flickeringstops.
"
\-,
Voltage is high and uncontrollable: Low input voltage to 1 and 2, voltage regulator is defective
or the exciterfield is grounded. Anotherreasonfor this is that the exciteramperageexceedsthe
rating of the voltage regulator.
Intermittent flashes or glitches in voltage: Loose connection to regulator ac input or a
defective exciter field with a carbon track or interrnittent open in field coil or loose componentsin the
voltage regulator due to excessivevibration.
Voltage rises with load: Unbalancedloading of generator leads or P3 needs to be adjusted more
cw.
Voltage falls off with load: P3 is adjusted too far cw, adjust ccw until voltage droop is
satisfactory.Another reasoncould be that the input voltage to 1 and 2 is too low for full load exciter
voltage.
Voltage will not adjust to lower values: lnput wiring to voltage regulator is supplied thru a
cord or cable that is unshielded. Use loose wirinq or shieldedcables.
Voltage is affected when SCR heating or motor speed controls are used on generator:
This is due to line notchingcausedby the SCR. Installa 2.5 uf 250 v capacitoracrossthe 1 and 2 input
of the requlator.
