Radial J48 Direct Box
The Radial J48 direct box is the world's finest phantom-powered active DI. It has been optimized
to handle extreme transients using only the 5 milliamps of available current from typical 48-Volt
phantom power. The J48 features a unique digital switch-mode power supply that steps up the
internal rail voltage to an amazing 9-Volts.
Most active battery poweredguitars and bases will produce as much as 7-Volts when played hard
at maximum volume. Since typical direct boxes are only able to handle about 3 volts, they choke. The
trouble is caused when the input level is higher than the internal rail voltage. This creates all types of
distortion: Bass sounds thin and lacks punch. Guitars sound scratchy, tend to have sporatic peaks,
and they loose their natural body resonance.
Because the J48 has more ‘horse-power”, it is able to handle these transients without choking.
This extra headroom significantly reduces harmonic, phase and inter-modulation distortions. And
when you fix all of the problems, a funny thing occurs... You get great sound!
The J48 is ideally suited for live sound stages on both guitars and bases where the extra reach of
an active DI box is desired. Up to eight J48s can be rack-mounted using the Radial J-Rak. The J48 is
normally poweredwith48Vphantom and can be fitwithabattery terminal for 9/18V DC.
Applications
The Merge function turns the input & thru
into ‘left & right’ inputs to mono mix at the
XLR output. This handy function saves
valuable inputs on the mixer!
Converts hi-Z inputs to low-Z for long runs
Ideal for active acoustic guitars and basses
Great for keyboards and drum modules
Provides extra reach in your sound!
Equally wonderful for live or studio
A -15dB pad allows super hot inputs such
as from a CD player to be connected and
balanced for long runs.
Momentary LED will flash once when the
80Hz filter is depressed to tell you phantom
power is present.
Cool factors
Huge 9-Volt internal rail voltage
Handles huge transients without choking
Low phase and inter-modulation distortion
Can be rack-mounted with the J-Rak
Plug and play easy to use!
Sounds amazing!
The input is connected to the instrument
and the thru-put to the instrument amplifier.
The J48 has a high input impedance to
reduce loading.
Our book-end design creates a protective
zone around the switches & connectors for
best protection!
A polarity reverse switch flips the polarity
from the AES standard Pin-2 to Pin-3 on
the XLR and is used when combining
sounds that may be out of phase.
A 80Hz low-cut (high-pass) filter gently
reduces excessive bass for more
headroom and clarity. Eliminates run-away
resonant feedback from acoustics!
The ground-lift disconnects the ground
path at the XLR output. This would be used
when a ground connection is made at the
input side such as with a keyboard.
The 600 Ohm balanced XLR out is mic
level to properly match concert splitters will
drive 1000 feet without appreciable noise.
A full-bottom no-slip pad reduces
mechanical vibration, improves electrical
isolation and prevents DI from sliding.
Main competition
The primary competition for the Radial J48 comes from other active
DI’s that do not have sufficient headroom to handle the transients of
today’s active instruments. The J48 will not choke when hit with high
levels from battery powered guitars!
Typical headroom of most DI’s is a
mere 3 Volts. This was originally
designed for passive guitars
The J48’s 9V rails provide the extra
headroom so it won’t choke!

Rail voltage
The output from today’s active guitars
& bases reach 7-Volts causing most DI’s to
square wave. This makes them sound harsh.
More headroom means you get less
distortion and better sound!
A heavy-duty baked enamel finish for
excellent durability and great looks for
years! 100% 14-gauge steel construction.
Endorsements
Welded I-beam construction makes it
impossible to torque the PC board. This
virtually eliminates cold solder joints - the
No.1 cause of system failure in the field.
“Over a period of weeks, I experimented with a handfull of Dis. In every
comparison, the Radial J48 at least held its own and usually was the
final choice. Very smooth and natural. I bought two.”
-- Dave Martin, Audio Media Magazine
A digital switching power supply steps-up
the internal rail voltage to 9-Volts. The J48
will not choke like other DI’s when hit with
large transients.
A military-grade PC board is employed for
maximum wear and tear in abusive
enviroments. Welded steel standoffs
ensure the PC board will not shift.
“ The J48 DI's compliment your instrument's sound, and they're built
tough to withstand the abuse of the road. I love them!”
-- Rob Nevalainen, Engineer with Bryan Adams
“Radials are very transparent DIs. If I need to hear what the instrument
sounds like with little or no coloration, the Radials are my box of
choice. They are very reliable and well constructed”
-- Robert Scovill, Engineer with Tom Petty
