London Pride Saxifraga umbrosa Plant Height: 12 inches Flower Height: 18 inches Spread: 24 inches Sunlight: Hardiness Zone: 5 Other Names: St. Patrick's Cabbage, Whimsey, Pyrenean Saxifrage Description: A low growing perennial evergreen plant great for all year round color, suitable for container growing or in low borders; Ideal as a stand out plant in a shady area Ornamental Features: Saxifraga umbrosa in bloom Photo courtesy of NetPS Plant Finder London Pride features beautiful spikes of white star-shaped flowers with pink eyes and red spots rising above the foliage from mid spring to early summer, which are most effective when planted in groupings. It's attractive serrated oval leaves remain dark green in color throughout the year. The fruit is not ornamentally significant. The stems are brick red but aren't particularly outstanding. Landscape Attributes: London Pride is an herbaceous evergreen perennial with a mounded form. Its medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition. This perennial will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and should not require much pruning, except when necessary, such as to remove dieback. It has no significant negative characteristics. It grows at a medium rate, and under ideal conditions can be expected to live for approximately 10 years. This perennial does best in partial shade to shade. It requires an evenly moist well-drained soil for optimal growth, but will die in standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is somewhat tolerant of urban pollution. This plant can be propagated by division. This species is not originally from North America.
