Registered Charity No 511294 Seed List 2014 www.nessgardens.org.uk How to order your seeds As a member of the Friends of Ness Gardens you can order up to 20 packets of seeds from the list. The seed is free, however, we do require you send us a padded stamped self addressed envelope with your order. As only limited quantities of seed are available please note that only one packet of any one number can be supplied. We are only able to send seed to addresses in the UK and EU, Croatia, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. Please send your completed order form (available from our website) and padded stamped self-addressed envelope to: The Seed Department Ness Botanic Gardens Ness, Neston Cheshire CH64 4AY Convention on Biological Diversity In accordance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Ness Botanic Gardens supplies seed from its garden collections to members of the Friends of Ness Gardens on the conditions that: The plant material is used for the common good in areas of research, education, conservation and the development of horticultural institutions or gardens. If the recipient seeks to commercialise the genetic material, its products or resources derived from it, then written permission must be sought from Ness Botanic Gardens. Such commercialisation will be subject to the conditions of a separate agreement. The genetic material, its products or resources derived from it are not passed on to a third party for commercialisation without written permission from Ness Botanic Gardens. It is a condition of supply that any publications resulting from the use of the plant material should acknowledge Ness Botanic Gardens as the supplier. A copy of any publication, report or data gained from the material must be logged with the Ness Botanic Gardens Library. www.nessgardens.org.uk 2 Open pollination The seed is collected from open-pollinated plants. Open pollinated simply means pollinated by insect, wind or whatever natural mechanism the plant normally uses as opposed to controlled pollination by humans. This means seedlings will all be different from each other and the parent plants, just like human children. The differences, to the untrained eye, are generally not noticeable and of little consequence. However, occasionally, there may be a seedling that has ‘not come true’. As a result you may get some pleasant surprises! The Meconopsis grandis (right) grown from seed at Ness has a double flower with some cream and purple markings as opposed to the normal single blue flower. Toxic seeds It should be assumed, to be safe, that ALL seed could be potentially harmful or cause skin irritation. Therefore, as a precaution, and additionally to avoid any risk of choking, we advise that all seed should be kept out of the reach of children and pets; and should never be ingested. Collector’s codes Some seeds on the list have code immediately following the plants name, made up of letters and numbers. This is the collector’s code. This denoted that the plant from which the seed was collected from originated in the wild. The letters represent the collector or expedition and the numbers link back to the records of that collector. The picture (left) shows the male catkins of Betula insignis GUIZ 82. GUIZ means it was collected in 1985 by the Simmons, Fleigner, Russell expedition. 82 refers to a record that says that the seed came from Fanjiing Shan in north eastern Guizhou Province, China. www.nessgardens.org.uk 3 Abbreviations A Bi C P Bu G S T Annual Biennial Climber Herbaceous Perennial Bulb or corm Grass or grass like Shrub Tree !
