Blue leaves have a barely visible chartreuse-­‐green center that becomes more visible as the season progresses. Lavender flowers. Leaves are dark green, with a greenish yellow margin, slightly shiny on top and bottom. The scape is 30 to 34" long, light green. Flowers are white.
Leaf light green with a wide, flat, creamy white margin. Dull on top and underneath. Flower: long, pale lavender, tubular.
Leaf: 2.5 in. (6.4 cm) long, 1.25 in. (3.2 cm) wide, medium green; dull on top, very shiny underneath; lightly wavy, lance, tapered base. Flower: long, pale purple; dark purple stripes inside; tubular.
A medium sized hosta with white centered leaves which are edged in medium green. The white center is misted with tiny green speckles.
Plants to 6’ across with green leaves with wide, gold edges. Pale lavender flowers in mid-­‐summer.

Leaves are 16" long and 12" wide, deep blue-­‐
green aging to dark green by mid-­‐summer. Flowers are near-­‐white with a pale lavender midrib.
Plant erect, reaching 10" in height and 18" in width; leaves 5" long and 1.5" wide, blue-­‐green, flat. Flowers bell-­‐shaped, white.
Blue, heavily-­‐textured, rounded leaves have a thin white edge. Plants of small size.

The thick leaves have good corugation and this plant is a very vigorous grower. Topped with pale lavender flowers in June. Plants to 27" tall by 55" wide, with 12.25" long by 9" wide leaves which are a very bright gold that almost glistens; Flowers from late June into mid-­‐
July; sets seed well.
Plants reach 28" in height and 48" in width; leaves are 14" long and 10" wide, medium green, cordate, furrowed. Scape is 35" tall, foliated, straight, the flowers funnelform, lavender.

Plants small, the leaves 5" long and 2" wide with 5 veins, lanceolate, ruffled, medium green with a white margin.
Deep blue, pointed leaves on this rapidly growing sport of 'Wolverine'. Very tight habit. Lavender flowers in August.
Hosta 'Deja Blu' is a sport of 'Blue Boy'. Leaves are blue-­‐green in the center, edged with creamy white, with a chartreuse-­‐green margin.
A cross of H. 'Korean Snow' x H. 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd' forms a 15" tall x 2' wide clump of large, upright, shiny glaucous corrugated leaves. The clump is topped with 28" stalks of tightly stacked purple flowers in September.
Huge dark green leaves have deeply impressed veins and tremendous substance. In 5 or 6 years a mature clump can reach 4 1/2’ tall. Topped with pale lavender flowers on 5’ scapes in midsummer A sport of H. ‘Big John’ and one of the “Xanadu” series from Brian & Virginia Skaggs.
Hosta 'Eskimo Pie' is a colorful sport of 'Northern Exposure'. The thick, puckered leaves emerge with pale yellow centers, chartreuse streaking, and blue-­‐green margins. As the season progresses, the centers fade to cream and the streaking turns apple-­‐green.
A large to very large, upright mounding blue with gracefully rippling edges. This ‘Niagara Falls’ hybrid is fast growing with excellent substance. Palest lavender fertile flowers are held on semi-­‐
pendant scapes.
Plants reach 30" in height and 36" in width; leaves are 11" long and 8" wide with 12 veins, dark green with a wide, even albescent yellow margin, cordate, cupped, rugose. Scape 38" tall, foliated, oblique, the flowers funnel-­‐shaped, lavender.
Plants 18" tall, 22" wide; leaves 8" long, 6" wide, cordate, wavy-­‐undulate, light green with a yellowish-­‐white margin. Scape 36" tall, bare, straight, the flowers large, funnel-­‐shaped, white, fragrant.
'Fragrant Queen' has elongated heart shaped leaves with wide creamy to almost pure white margin and dark green centers. The large, fragrant, pale lavender flowers stand tall above the foliage. Plants 16" tall and 25" across.

Rapid grower of backround size and specimen quality. Large puckered leaves have a broad white margin on a blue-­‐green base, and are of good substance. Does well under a wide range of climatic conditions. Performs best in shade to full sun. Pest resistant. Early blooming, producing pale lavender flowers.
Plants are erect reaching 4" in height and 8" in width; leaves are 4" long and 2" wide with 5 veins, ovate, flat, chartreuse with a darker green margin. Scape is 10" tall, bare straight; flowers are lavender, bell-­‐shaped.
A large plant with chartreuse leaves accented by a wide green border; white flowers are large and fragrant, effective in August.
Medium-­‐sized specimen with excellent blue leaves (Shady Oaks). Attractive foreground specimen; best blue English import; slug resistant. Performs best in shade to 1/2 sun (Klehm).
Stunning sport of H. ‘Striptease’ Leaf emerges with a dark green center surrounded by a wide light dusty-­‐green margin with dark green veins and the typical white H. ‘Striptease’ pattern. This vigorous grower is topped with pale lavender flowers in July.
Introduced by the Dutch Hosta Society at their 15th Anniversary meeting, named in honor of Harry van de Laar, a well known Dutch plantsman. The leaves are grayish-­‐green with white backs and are held on red petioles. The red goes up into the leaves which are topped with lilac flowers in later summer. This compact hosta emerges in spring with a narrow, yellow center and wide, powder-­‐blue margins. As the season progresses, the leaf center widens and brightens to white. Pale lavender flowers in late summer. Sport of H. 'June'.

Similar in vigor, size, and habit to 'Royal Standard' but leaves are chartreuse edged with a darker green. Fragrant white flowers are borne mid-­‐
summer.
Plants form a mound 10" tall by 22" of white centered, green margined leaves. Leaves are 4.25"x3.125", with purple red petioles. Flowers are pale purple and bloom in July on 18" scapes. Leaves are lightly wavy, lightly corrugated and broadly ovate. Fairly blue on the wide margin, the center is blue-­‐green changing to golden yellow with white lines around it. Blue version of H. 'Striptease'.
Plants form very large upright clumps that reach 6' or more across; leaves are dark green with rippled edges; this information is from the 1998 Bridgewood fall supplement.
Smaller and more compact than H. ventricosa with very dark, almost black, satiny green leaves.
Large, soft gray leaves have a white backing and are bordered with wonderful cream edges. The lower half of its petioles display red purple.
Leaves emerge blue and almost immediately develop yellow centers that improve and brighten with time. The blue margin is quite wide and the leaf is divided into about three equal parts. Very vigorous and topped with near-­‐white flowers. A small to medium sized plant, H. 'Madam' emerges chartreuse, and with a few hours of sun brightens to a glowing neon gold, with strong, direct, spade-­‐shaped leaves, with some red on the outside petioles. The most exciting feature is the way the deep red scapes come slipping out from underneath the leaves in the heat of July. The fertile pods develop the same deep color as the scapes, and with a half-­‐day of sun the leaves will take on a mellow candle-­‐glow yellow.
Plant: 48 in. (122 cm) diameter, 18 in. (46 cm) high; mound-­‐like; fast. Leaf: very shiny on top; very shiny underneath; Flower: 1.5 to 2 in. (4.31 cm) long; lightly striped;

Hosta 'Maui Butttercups' has bright yellow, rounded leaves that are deeply cupped and corrugated, thick and leathery.
Upright grower of foreground size for specimen use. Round, intensely gold leaves have good substance and puckering, and a heavy sheen. It grows well with 1/2 shade to full sun (DS 111). Leaves rounded, cupped, and heavily puckered. Flowers pale lavender. Grows best in 1/4 to 3/4 sun. Hybridized by Paul Aden (DS 133).
Medium-­‐sized plants have heart-­‐shaped leaves that are gold with a green margin; white flowers.
Plant registered as having yellow-­‐mottled leaves, and the plant currently in the Trade lacks that and may need to be re-­‐named. Plants 14" tall, 30" wide; leaves 8" long, 5" wide, medium-­‐green (registered with yellow mottling), margin yellowish-­‐white, cordate, flat, some leaves rugose. Larger and more vigorous than its parent 'White Christmas' with velvety thick green leaves highlighted by a white center. Foliage retains its color better and is less susceptible to sunburn than its parent.
A sport of H. 'Paul's Glory' from Bob Solberg. The center of the leaf is a bright gold when it emerges in spring and lightens to a rich yellow. Same substance as its parent and topped with pale lavender flowers in midsummer. Gold leaves are edged blue-­‐green, the color and pattern intensifying during the summer. Introduced as 'Abiqua Paradigm'.

Plants 18" tall and 24" wide; leaves 6.5"-­‐10" long and 6"-­‐8" wide, orbicular-­‐cordate, nearly round, wavy-­‐margined, light yelow-­‐green, acuminate with projecting tip. Scape 24" tall, flowers white, held nearly horizontally, very large, to 5" in length, fragrant, night-­‐blooming.
An Eleanor Lachman introduction which forms a 2' wide clump that is composed of thick, cupped blue leaves, each highlighted by a large, round creamy pattern in the center. In late spring, the clump is topped with a 2' stalk of pale lavender flowers.
Sumptuous, gently cupped strongly puckered leaves of stunning soft powdery blue color. Pale white-­‐lavender flowers top the dense, compact, foliage clump from mid to late summer.
Large, thick, blue-­‐green leaves are heart-­‐shaped and have a heavily rippled and serrated margin. The clump will be topped with near-­‐white flowers in early summer and will reach a size of 24” high by 48” across.
A small sport of H. 'Maui Buttercups'. The fluorescent, heavily puckered golden leaves are rimmed by dramatic dark green margins. Light lavender flowers in early summer. Corrugated, slug resistant foliage.
A small mounded plant with dark green, very shiny 4"-­‐5" long and 1.5"-­‐2" wide lanceolate foliage with a long acuminate tip. Flowers are purple, held on showy bright red scapes.
Leaves 4-­‐6" long, 2" wide, erect and in line with the petiole, lanceolate, petiole transition gradual, decurrent, flat, erect, smooth, thin-­‐textured, dark green with silvery-­‐white margin, and acuminate tip; veins 5, impressed above, smooth below. Blooms in August.

Leaves are large, rounded, and up to 12" wide, blue-­‐grey, crinkled and deeply veined. The dense heads of lilac-­‐white trumpet flowers just overtop the leaves. It is difficult to name a more striking herbaceous plant.
Plants with heart-­‐shaped, intense, silver blue leaves form an attractive mound. The leaves are also thick and heavily corrugated. Pale lavender flowers top the mound in mid-­‐late summer.
Plants 8" tall, 12" wide. Leaves 4" long, 1" wide, lanceolate, flat, medium green. Scape 14" tall, bare, straight; flowers white, funnel-­‐shaped, profuse.
Medium sized plants to 18" tall by 36" wide, leaves are 7" long by 4" wide, shiny medium green; with whitish shiny undersides; blades elliptic and moderately wavy; smooth textured; average substance; 8-­‐10 vein pairs. Flowers in early to late August; pale purple, darker in bud; 2.25" long by 1 1/8" wide; wide-­‐open funnel shape; many 28" , reddish-­‐colored scapes; develops a few pods. One of the best hostas for flower effect.

Small, rounded bright gold leaves with a wide light green border and a distintive darker green 'watermark' in the area between the margin and center.
Plants are large reaching 36" in height with leaves that are very white-­‐pruinose on both sides; flower scapes reach 5.5' in height. Called the "Tenryu River Hosta" this has been cultivated in the Tenryu River area of Shizuoka Prefecture. Named by Haruo Yoshie in 1985. Reportedly a long-­‐scaped H. sieboldiana.
A small hosta, 'The Razor's Edge' really loves to "show off" in a decorative container where its distinctive qualities can be easily displayed. The upright habit showcases bright red leaf stalks that lead up to long, ruffled, lance shaped, green leaves. As the season progresses the stalks deepen to a dark red. A Blue Ribbon at First Look 2005 award winner, Hosta 'The Razor's Edge' also has lavender flowers that are produced in midsummer.
A sport of H. 'Sum and Substance' with a wide gold border surrounding the dark green leaf. The leaves are large and slightly wavy. Clumps of these plants could get as broad as 9'. Plants are topped with large light lavender flowers in midsummer.
Found in the planting of Hosta tokudama 'Flavo-­‐
circinalis' (86-­‐212) currently located on the east side of Comstock Knoll. This individual was larger and more vigorous than the type.
A tetraploid from H. 'June' with intense, thick blue leaves with a yellow-­‐gold center. Plants are topped with 2' tall spikes of lavender flowers in midsummer. Clumps grow to 2' wide.
Leaves are larger than the parent, more heavily substanced, and with a wider yellow margin.
Plants are small with wavy-­‐edged narrow leaves of lime green edged in darker green; flowers are purple.

Leaves heart-­‐shaped with a unique twist, dark green with broad irregular margin of yellow that turns to white and lasts until frost. Leaves 7" (17.5 cm) long, 6" (15 cm) wide; plants form an 18" (45 cm) high and 24" (60 cm) wide mound. Many mauve flowers are produced in midsummer. Performs best in shade to 3/4 sun (DS 197). Glossy green leaves have broad creamy white edge (DS 152).
This hybrid makes a 30" wide clump of very dark green, cupped, heavily-­‐corrugated leaves. Each leaf is highlighted by a dramatic, narrow, creamy-­‐
white central pattern. The clumps are topped with near-­‐white flowers on 2' scapes in late spring.
Plants with blue-­‐green H. sieboldiana type leaves on a vigoruously growing 54" wide clump. In early summer the plants are topped with 33" tall scapes of pure white fragrant flowers.
Foliage blue-­‐green with a very wide, irregular margin that develops gold tints at maturity. Leaves are 6" (15 cm) wide, 8" (20 cm) long. Plants 18" (45 cm) tall, 24" (60 cm) wide. A rapid grower with attractive buds and profuse, dense, pale lavender flower heads in summer. Performs best in shade to 1/2 sun. Specimen quality plant.

Tree reaching 10 to 20 m in height with broad open, conical form, densely twiggy with spreading branches that nod at the tips; branchlets a good silver-­‐gray, moss-­‐like, crispate, soft to the touch; leaves all needle-­‐form, dense, radially arranged, soft, blue-­‐green above, silvery-­‐white beneath.
Beautiful large shrub or small tree. Leaves are dark green and tend to be clustered at the ends of the branches creating a whorled appearance. The fragrant, white, 1/3" diameter flowers are borne in 4-­‐6" long terminal racemose panicles from July to August. The bark is a beautiful, smooth, polished gray to rich brown and may display an exfoliating character.
Unusually floriferous; very broad, bushy form suitable for the small landscape. Dirr notes having observed a specimen at Mill Creek Valley Park in Youngstown, Ohio that was impressive compared to the species in its heavy flower and fruit production.

Large multi-­‐stemmed shrub or small tree of oval-­‐
rounded outline, usually branching to the ground, reaching 20' to 25' in height and 15' to 20' in width. Flowers yellow, borne in March, effective for three weeks, borne in short-­‐stalked 3/4" diameter umbels. Fruit a bright, cherry-­‐red, oblong, 5/8" long, 1/2" wide drupe, ripening in July, often hidden by the foliage. Vigorous, erect, uniformly wide from top to bottom, reaching a height of 22' and spread of 18'; Flowers profuse, effective blooming period starts 3 days after C. florida ends, and extends for about 2 weeks; highly resistent to dogwood borer.
Dwarf selection with dark green foliage; produces very large crops of dark red fruit. Strong grower that is still relatively unknown in the Trade. A male form selected to pollinate northern types of I. verticillata; flowers over an extended period. Initially released as 'Dwarf Male'.
'Coral Lake' is a complex blend of coral, yellow and pink. It blooms prolifically , and flowers have a pleasant fragrance. The plant forms a small, semi fatigiate tree with flowers that open late, avoiding most frosts. To 15' tall x 12' wide.

‘Pretty Belinda’ is a rhizomatous, spreading, upright yarrow cultivar that is noted for its lilac-­‐

Selected for improved fruit production and quality (from conversation with Gary Koller, Curator of the Living Collections at the Arnold Arboretum). See Northwoods Nursery 1996 Catalog: of Russian origin -­‐ the name means "pineapple-­‐like;" a productive cultivar with unusually large fruit.
A rosette of strap-­‐like leaves surround 1"-­‐2" long, trumpet-­‐shaped blooms clustered on top of 18"-­‐
48" stems; perfect for a full sun, well-­‐drained site. Blooms July -­‐ early fall. Hardy to zone 5.
Leaves deciduous, upt to 28cm long and 1.3cm wide, upright, strongly ribbed beneath. Insides of the flowers are violet-­‐blue (92A), segmets sometimes recurved, 2.9cm long (tube 1cm), 3.8cm across. Plants with handsome scalloped leaves and billows of airy chartreuse blossoms in early summer.
Alchemilla sericata ‘Gold Strike’ has bright chartreuse flowering umbels and velvety gray-­‐
green, scalloped foliage. It is a free flowering plant that blooms from June to August and maintains a compact habit. 14" tall.
The compact 1' tall x 1' wide clump of narrow glossy green, deer-­‐resistant leaves is topped for over a month in late summer with 2" rosy-­‐purple flower heads.
Composed of 8" long x 0.5" wide, slightly twisted, glaucous, deer-­‐resistant leaves topped with 15" tall spikes that end with 2" floral balls. The clump begins flowering in early June and reflowers through the end of September. The flowers are pure white except where the nights are cool.
Plants notable for the dark purple color on the emerging stems, which contrasts with the leaves. The leaves are arranged in a semicircle on the upper stems.
A spontaneous cross of A. hubrechtii & A. tabernaemontana, 'Seaford Skies' makes a very large clump, arching to 5' wide, topped in very early spring with numerous clusters of typical sky-­‐

These plants sway on tall but sturdy stems above lush deep green maple-­‐shaped leaves. Downy green buds open into semidouble white flowers with chartreuse eyes. In winter, seed heads turn a rich chocolate brown.
Sport of A. xhybrida, that has been cultivated since 1858. White flowers are single with contrasting yellow stamens and dark green foliage. Plants 5' tall, 2' wide. Blooming season early autumn.

The Japanese counterpart to our native A. racemosa, or spikenard. This perennial dies to the ground each year. Leaf solitary, emerging with flower or just after, leaflets 10-­‐20x7-­‐18cm, 3, median largest, suborbicluar to ovate; 'Siren's Song', introduced by Seneca Hill Perennials has huge umbrellas of wide, undulating deep bright green leaflets with high-­‐
contrast silver centers, held aloft by distinctly reddish stems. Being a bit top-­‐heavy, the plants do tend to slouch, so either stake them before they do or love them as they are.
A Seneca Hill Perennials introduction. The base color of the leaflet is a glaucous blue-­‐gray, the leaflet center is brushed with silver, and the leaflet edges are undulated.
An imposing arisaema with immense, tropical looking tripartite leaves (single leaflets have measured over 50cm/20" long), and a large, dramatically flared inflorescence, deep maroon with stark white striping (inside and out). Very late to emerge: July, in Oswego. Plants similar in appearance and habitat preference to the American A. dracontium, but with the inflorescence held above the foliage, and the spadix-­‐appendix more dramatically upthrust. Like A. dracontium, it has an elegant pedate leaf.
Elegant and very rare Japanese species from the mountains of Kyushu. The tall stem bears 1 leaf with about 10 leaflets. The flowers are striped green or purple with white inside, with a threadlike extension on the spathe. Mid season to late, excellent garden plant. Needs very well-­‐
drained soil in shade.
To 30cm. Leaves 2, leaflets 15-­‐20cm, 3, broad-­‐
ovate, long-­‐acuminate, apex filiform, glossy green; petiole green or tinged purple, exceeding peduncle. Spathe tube to 3.5cm, obconic, green to purple, striped white or pale green, spadix enclosed in spathe, stipitate, white to pale yellow.
Easily grown jack-­‐in-­‐the-­‐pulpit from Japan has striking black flowers. The entire spathe is a deep black-­‐purple that does not fade. The stately plant grows to nearly 3 feet tall, flowering above the foliage. Grow in shade in rich, very well-­‐drained soil. We find that this species is very persistent in the garden.

A granddaughter of 'Andenken an Alma Potschke', 'Alma Baby' is a rich pink, not as dark as her grandma, with a compact habit, incredibly floriferous nature, and deliciously full flowers. Unpruned, it grows to 4' tall; with a single mid-­‐
season pruning you can easily keep it around 60cm/2ft. The color is a saturated pink, neither peachy nor purplish.
The best white-­‐flowered Aster novae-­‐angliae, A drought tolerant Aster that stars in the fall garden. Masses of sugar-­‐pink flowers accented by burnt orange centers adorn compact 15" tall by 2' wide plants. Color Flash® Lime has a pale pink plume that stands aprox. 10" above the lime green foliage. Seed collected in the upper reaches of Emei Shan in Sichuan Province, China, in the autumn of 1996. Parent plants were 8' tall with pinnate foliage that reached 5' in length; flowers pink, held in tall panicles. This includes 'DJHC 98411' and 'DJHC 814' both from the same general collection site in Sichuan (see Heronswood 2000 catalog).

A hybrid that combines the rich purple color of C. xjackmannii with the full, rouded form of its other parent C. `Ville de Lyon'. From June to September it produces 4" to 7" blooms with rounded sepals of deep velvet-­‐purple, darkening toward the edges; bronze stamens slowly change to silver, adding a bright accent. Tuber to 6" in diameter, depressed-­‐globose with corky surface, rooting mostly on the upper surface. Leaf blades cordate, often angled or lobed, to 5 1/2" long, marbled above, green or rarely beet-­‐red beneath, margins obscurely toothed. Flowers about 1" long, rose-­‐pink to white; late summer to early autumn blooming.
Fortune's Holly Fern leafs out pale green and darkens to an olive green in summer. It is one of the hardiest representatives of its genus.

Small, simple, lavender-­‐pink flowers with small white spurs grow above the foliage in the spring. The color deepens toward the edge of each flower part. Fresh spring leaves have the texture of silk and are tinted in a delicate shade of mocha. Compact growth at 7" in bloom, and flowers to 10".
This second generation hybrid has pristine, medium-­‐sized white flowers with long spurs like E. grandiflorum. The small leaflets display a very striking, persistent silver overlay above the main veins. Semi evergreen. 6" tall in bloom, growing to 12" tall later in the season.
With shorter rhizomes than the species, it spreads only 4-­‐5" a year, but its denser growth habit and thick foliage make it a far superior groundcover for smothering out weeds. Inner-­‐
sepals are pale red. Overall height is only 8". Same drought tolerance as the species.

Plants reach 12" in height forming an attractive mound of finely cut foliage; masses of sky-­‐blue flowers are produced on long lax panicles throughout most of the summer.

A citron-­‐yellow leaved Coral Bells with outstanding heat and humidity tolerance. Thrives in more shade than many other close relatives, although under such conditions the foliage is more chartreuse; white bell shaped flowers in summer.

Showy, lavender flowers over thin, dark evergreen foliage that spreads.

M. 'Peter's Purple' came from the garden of Texas native plant guru Peter Loos, when a M. bartlettii and a M. fistulosa 'Claire Grace' crossed. The result is a robust heat-­‐loving 4' tall clump, topped in June and July with rich lavender-­‐purple flowers, backed by purple calyces. Powdery mildew resistant.

Penstemon 'Dark Towers' is a new hybrid from the University of Nebraska that is tough and hardy to zone 3. In midsummer, the plants explode with tall stems of tubular flowers that are deep lavender-­‐rose at the base and lighter pink towards the tips. The deep wine-­‐red foliage is even darker than Penstemon 'Husker Red'.
Penstemon 'Mystica' has foliage that emerges green, changes to dark maroon-­‐red during the summer, and finally changes again to blazing red in the fall. Clusters of lavender-­‐
pink flowers are set off by the dark foliage from early spring to early summer. Compact habit and drought tolerant.
With foliage that’s close to lime-­‐green, and spiky floral tails that approach the scarlet spectrum of rosy pink, plants are 3' tall and spreading. Blooms August -­‐ November. From Piet Oudolf’s Dutch nursery.

Profuse creamy-­‐white flowers dangle from short arching stems in spring; they are followed by green berries that turn purple in autumn. The season ends with the foliage turning an attractive golden yellow in fall. This vigorous spreader can form a dense colony in a few years. Coppery green leaves in the spring turn to dark green leaves for the rest of the year. Leaves are composed of 8-­‐11 leaflets. Creamy white flowers; flowers numerous, sepals 5-­‐6, fleshy, ovate, tips acute; petals usually absent; stamens 10; ovary partially inferior, 2-­‐styled. Fruit a many-­‐seeded dehiscent capsule. A gold leaf form of the native Salmonberry features large hot pink blooms in spring.
Early Bird Gold’ is a compact black-­‐eyed Susan that typically grows to 2’ tall on stiff, upright stems clad with oblong to lanceolate dark green leaves. It was discovered growing in a field of Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm’ at Dupont Nursery in Louisiana. Daisy like flowers (3-­‐4” diameter) with bright yellow rays and dome-­‐
shaped dark brown center cones bloom singly atop strong, sometimes-­‐branching stems from mid-­‐June to October. This cultivar is reportedly a day-­‐neutral plant (bloom occurs without regard to day length), hence its extended late spring (early bird) to fall bloom time.
Rudbeckia 'Henry Eilers' has golden yellow flowers with unique quilled petals and brown button centers. 'Henry Eilers' is a very upright and sturdy grower.
Salvia 'Rhapsody in Blue' is another sage from Holland's plantsman, Piet Oudolf. This Salvia nemorosa 'Amethyst' hybrid forms a compact deciduous clump of dark green leaves, topped by up to 36 flower spikes. The 22" tall spikes are clothed with blue-­‐purple flowers (RHS 93A) from mid-­‐April into June.

A truly stunning large, variegated Symphytum with grey-­‐green leaves widely banded in yellow. It has bigger leaves and a much more vigorous growth habit than S. x uplandicum ‘Variegatum’. After it blooms, cut everything (stems and leaves) back to the ground; the plant will send out a new flush of fresh foliage. An exceptional foliage plant, the leaves emerging like umbrellas densely coated with silvery hairs, expanding into 10" diameter leathery, dark green, rounded leaves divided into many linear segments held on a 15" tall petiole; flowers are aster-­‐like, small, white.

A dwarf selection of a Lupine relative from China. Its bright canary-­‐yellow flowers fill the flower spikes in late spring and are beautifully set off by blue-­‐tinted foliage. These tough, bushy plants are under 2ft tall, and they love light and tolerate drought.

A handsome woodlander that forms clumps of deeply lobed leaves from which rise tall sturdy stems supporting dense umbels of foamy white flowers, the masses of clean white flowers light up the shade garden. This Terra Nova introduction is very similar to T. 'Samurai'. The stems rise to 1' tall, clothed with shiny green leaves, each surrounded by a golden border. In early summer and sporadically into fall, the 3' wide plants are topped with 1" wide, white with heavy purple speckling starfish-­‐shaped flowers.
Plants reach 2' or more in height; foliage is glossy green edged with yellow; flowers are lavender-­‐purple, produced in terminal clusters in autumn.
From a UBC collection in Sichuan which is a superior foliage plant with bold black mottlings especially vivid on the new growth. In bright shade to part sun this has strong vertical stems which have late summer buff to amber brown flowers.

Stems densely pubescent. Leaves to 12x10cm, rhombic-­‐ovate, broad-­‐cuneate at base, deep pinnatifid, lobes oblong, to 5.5x2cm, long acuminate, entire, pubescent, green, paler beneath. Flowers in whorls of 6, in terminal, 2cm spikes; It has lovely fine foliage like Amsonia hubrichtii and is a compact, well-­‐branched and vigorous plant. In late summer it is covered with true purple flowers that attract plenty of butterflies; very tolerant of hot dry locations, yet can withstand brief periods of inundation.
Veronica 'Foxy Lady' is a bicolor Veronica, with bright flower spikes that are packed with tiny, lavender-­‐purple and white candy striped flowers. Veronica 'Foxy Lady' is a sport of 'Red Fox' (Rotfuchs) and has the same dwarf habit and long bloom time as its parent.
An Ernst Pagels introduction with lovely, light lavender flowers. A large and vigorous-­‐growing strain from Callaway Gardens in Georgia with large and often broad leaves, 6-­‐7 inches and more in length.
An unusually abundant display of fruit makes this Viburnum glow. It reaches about 8 feet tall.
Long, narrow leaves, which in our garden persist until January, and a vigorous habit of growth distinguish this remarkably native Viburnum. Colorful fruits are produced in late summer and fall.
