EVERGREENS
Gold Medallion Tree (cassia leptophylla)
Type: Evergreen
Size: 20-25 feet tall
Foliage: Shapely, bushy spreading crown. Frong-like medium green
compound leaves (12 pairs of leaflets on each frong-like leaf)
Flowers: Showy yellow flowers bloom in summer
Drought Tolerant: Yes, after consistent first year watering
Root System: Non-invasive
Negatives: 1) Large pods drop on ground in mature trees; 2) Some
pruning needed to maintain pleasing shape
Little Gem Southern Magnolia (magnolia grandiflora)
Type: Evergreen
Size: 25 feet tall, 20 feet wide
Foliage: Grows in upward pyramidal shape, not wide-canopy.
Medium size glossy dark green leaves.
Flowers: Fragrant white flowers in summer
Drought Tolerant: Needs some watering first 2-3 years, then drought
tolerant
Root System: Non-invasive
Negatives: 1) Leaf and flower drop late spring into autumn
Strawberry Tree (arbutus marina)
Type: Evergreen
Size: 15-40 feet tall
Foliage: Broad, dense crown with dark green leaves
Flowers: Hanging clusters of pink flowers in spring & fall
Drought Tolerant: Yes
Deer Resistant: Yes
Root System: Can be “somewhat” invasive
Negatives: 1) Flowers mature into strawberry-colored fruit which
drops onto ground; 2) Somewhat invasive root system
Firewheel Tree (stenocarpus sinuatus)
Type: Evergreen
Size: 25 feet tall, 15 feet wide
Foliage: Medium-size green leaves with minimal leaf drop
Flowers: Red/yellow tubular flowers in fall after tree matures
Drought Tolerant: Yes, needs occasional deep watering
Root System: Non-invasive
Negatives: 1) Takes some time to look “established” – a little wispy
looking as a young tree
Pepper Tree (schinus terebinthefolius)
Type: Evergreen
Size: 30 feet tall and wide
Foliage: Large crown, small green leaves
Fruit: red berry in winter
Drought Tolerant: Yes
Root System: Spreading shallow roots shouldn’t lift cement *
Negatives: 1) * Shallow roots can spread around the tree and make
it difficult to maintain other plantings under the tree, though the roots
don’t normally lift sidewalks; 2) Not good in lawns, can develop root
rot from wet conditions: 3) Very fast-growing
Lollypop Tree (myporum laetum)
Type: Evergreen
Size: 30 feet tall
Foliage: Broad, dense crown with dark green leaves
Flowers: Small white flowers in spring
Drought Tolerant: Yes
Root System: Non-invasive
Negatives: 1) Red fruit that drops after maturing; 2) Attracts birds.
Tree can reseed in area from bird droppings.
DECIDUOUS
Crape Myrtle Tree (lagerstoemia indica)
Type: Deciduous
Size: 25 feet tall, 20 feet wide
Foliage: Medium-size green leaves, turning yellow-orange-red in fall
Flowers: Pink, white, or lavender flowers during summer into fall
Drought Tolerant: Yes, but needs periodic deep watering
Root System: Non-invasive
Negatives: 1) Leaf drop in fall
Flowering Plum Tree (prunus cerasifera)
Type: Deciduous
Size: 20-30 feet tall, 10-20 feet wide
Foliage: Upright growth of red to dark purple leaves
Flowers: White or pink flowers in spring
Fruit: None if sterile tree is purchased (these are commonly
available)
Drought Tolerant: Needs some watering in first 2-3 years
Root System: Non-invasive
Negatives: 1) Not good in extremely windy locations; 2) Fruit drop if
variety chosen produces fruit; 3) Leaf drop in fall
Japanese Maple Tree (acer palmatum)
Type: Deciduous
Size: Vary greatly in height depending on varieties *
Drought Tolerant: Needs consistent watering first 1 – 2 years, then is
moderately drought tolerant
Root System: Non-invasive
 Three Suggested Varieties:
Red Leaf Variety (atropurpureum)
Size: 10 – 20 feet high, 10 – 20 feet wide
Foliage: Red leaves in spring which fade to green in summer, then
turns yellow-orange-red in fall
Coral Bark Variety (sango-kaku)
Size: 20 – 25 feet high, 15 – 20 feet wide
Foliage: Light green leaves, yellow-orange-red in fall, brilliant coral
red bark in winter
Bloodgood Variety
Size: 15 – 20 feet high, 10 – 15 feet wide
Foliage: Large deep red leaves in spring. Deepens to purple in
summer, then crimson red in fall. This variety has heavier limbs than
other japanese maples. Requires more watering than other varieties.
