Common Name: Oregon White Oak Scientific Name: Quercus garryana Sun Exposure: Full sun Average Size: 50-80 feet with 2-3 ft trunk diameter at maturity Moisture: Drought tolerant Elevation: Found naturally at low elevations (500-3,000 feet). Soils: Prefers dry rocky slopes or bluffs; sometimes on deep rich, well-drained soils.. Shape: Heavily limbed tree; often short and crooked in rocky habitats. Foliage: Alternate, deciduous, deeply round-lobed oak leaves up to 12 cm long Flower: Male and female flowers on the same tree; males flowers are hanging catkins and female flowers are small and inconspicuous. Fruit: Acorns, 2-3 cm long in shallow, rough surfaced cups; sweet and edible Notes: Acorns were eaten by the Salish people of the Puget Sound region after they soaked them in water to leach out the bitter tannins.
