'08 Big Bid Plants
These were the plants that went for the highest bids at the
2008 On-Line Auction
H. ‘Oma’s Sunrise’
(Sisson – NR)
This is the first offering of a great hosta to
honor the memory of Margot Dargatz who
passed away in November 2007. Margot was
a longtime member of the American Hosta
Society, Ontario Hosta Society, Hosta
Grower’s Association and was a Senior Judge
as well as the Region 7 Director for the AHS.
She and her husband Udo (who also passed
away in 2007) owned and operated Hosta
Choice Nursery in Appin, Ontario. Margot
(endearingly
called
Oma
by
her
3
grandchildren) will be sorely missed in the
hosta world. This hosta is an open pollinated
seedling from Tequila Sunrise and is a
wonderful soft yellow in the spring with
ruffled edges and dusty burgundy petioles
and pale lavender flowers in August.
The
winner of the auction will get a nice division
from the original plant; there only is an
original plant and it is in Kathie’s yard!
Kathie Sisson is the originator and donor!
H. ‘Powered by Bob’
(Trucks NR)
Wow! I have only seen the
picture, but my sources state
that it is a very glossy and
flashy plant. Named for our
webmaster, Bob Axmear, this
one
stands
right
out,
especially in the spring, from
its neighbors and sets seed
to boot. Very rare treat for
the collector and hybridizer
alike. This beauty is offered
by Jim McBurny.
H. ‘Turbulent Seas’
(Dean 99)
This is a second time offer for this
cross of H. ‘Neat and Tidy’ x H. ‘Aspen
Gold’ and second plant to leave the
gardens to anyone. A collector’s plant,
this cultivar offers a compact mound
with leaves held in multiple directions
(like Mom) that are wider than they
are long. Plenty of corrugation, wavy,
rippling, twisting and cupping on
these leaves. Well grown and mature,
the
plant
develops
“horned
protrusions” at the juncture of the
leave and petiole. It is . Availability is
limited to this auction! Alas, not an
easy parent. Pollen is a challenge and
pods are nearly non-existent. The
clump will grow 28” high and 53” in
diameter. A heavy mature single or
better division will be removed and
shipped in the spring by Don Dean.
H. ‘EMPRESS WU’ OS
Bidders like the one gallon pot
version of this plant. Now you
have a chance to get a well
grown division of perhaps the
world’s largest hosta sent
directly from and by the
originators! Brian and Virginia
Skaggs will ship (or hand
deliver if you pay their
transportation
;-})
this
offering of
stock, not to be
propagated or sold as it has a
patent pending. This is a
FOoSF star!
H. ‘Screaming Yellow Zonkers’
(Goodenough 07)
This is a Fascination x Elegans
seedling 12” high x 28” wide
with medium scapes. Flowers
are pale lavender blooming in
early to mid season. Dramatic
5” x 6 1/2” yellow leaves with
white and gold streaks are
rounded, puckered, and heart
shaped.
They are held
horizontally on relatively short
petioles. One mature division
is offered and shipped by the
originator, Rick Goodenough.
‘Frank Lloyd Wright’
Wright’
H. ‘Frank
(Goodenough 07)
This Outrageous x open cross
makes a magnificent very
large clump with leaves held
horizontally at top of the
clump. 31”+ tall, 3’+ wide at
3 years; bears near white
blooms. Large blue green
tapered leaves have generous
wavy edges. and the average
size leaf is
8.25”x11.5”.
Leaves are held very upright
on tall strong petioles. One
mature
division is offered
and shipped by the originator,
Rick Goodenough.
H. 'Royal Mouse Ears'
(2004)
E & J Deckert (ONIR)
This is the streaked sport of H. Blue Mouse
Ears. Plant: 9.0" diameter, 5" high. Moundlike with moderate growth rate. Leaf: 2.5"
long x 2.0" wide with flat margin.. 8-9 pairs
of veins. Medium blue-green, with cream
colored streaks. Dull on top, glaucous bloom
underneath deeply cupped, nearly round
with a cordate base. Scape: 6-7.5" long.
Flower: 0.5" long pale lavender, striped, bell
shaped. Blooms third week of June. Not yet
on the market, this stunning variegated
mutation of H. Blue Mouse Ears will remain
rare for at least 2 years, perhaps longer.
Winning bidder receives a 2 year old TC
plant this Spring. Offered by Emile & Jane
Deckert.
