OCTOBER, 2012
FEATURED PROJECT
Our North Texas Fall offers a vast palette of color and texture. We may have to
wait a bit longer for color in foliage than our friends up North, but we have much to enjoy
here. Many summer perennials are still blooming, and the fall and winter annuals we see in
the garden shops are lovely this year.
This month we discuss yet another pest new to our area. This one affects Crape
Myrtles. It is a scale insect closely related to the Azalea bark scale and is believed to have
migrated from Asia on timber. The first sign is a black, sooty mold that appears on the trunk
and branches. The scale insects, which are white, waxy encrustations suck sap out of the
plant. They leave behind “honeydew”, a sweet, sticky excretion that attracts ants. The ants
actually protect the scale insects from predators. The insects can be seen near pruning
wounds or branch crotches. To test for infestation, place a small piece of double-sided tape
above the suspected area. The insects will stick to the tape, and it will slow their progression
up the plant.
If you think your Crape Myrtle(s) is infected, please contact our office or Texas
A&M Agrilife Extension at: [email protected] or(979) 845-4747. They are tracking the
spread of the infestation, which started in Dallas three years ago, and studying the life cycle
to determine what will control further infestations. Though not life-threatening to a healthy
plant, the scale insects may stunt its growth and stress its overall endurance.
Highland Landscaping is taking orders for our custom made fall displays which
include pumpkins, gourds, corn, Mums and hay bales. We will custom design, or deliver
materials to your door. Schedule through our office at 817-488-2718.

FEATURED PLANT
ANEMONE
“Ranunculaceae”, a fragrant perennial, is also
known as “windflower”. The wind blows the
petals open and then, eventually, blows dead
petals away. Native to temperate zones, it will
thrive in most any soil and enjoys partial shade
with morning sun in our area. They can also be
used as winter color during most winters. There
are 120 species of Anemones. The petal-like sepals frame the globe-shaped seed head which
emerges from a long stem hosting deeply cut
leaves. Established plants form a 12” groundcover. Anemone is lovely as a border plant, and
stunning in cut flower arrangements.
This natural stone waterfall stands proudly in front of a local
office complex. While some water features are designed to
bring serenity, this one’s mission is to grab attention. The
roaring water is so powerful that onlookers have to raise
their voices over it. It is illuminated at night with underwater fixtures that shine up into the cascades.
