The Solar System consists of the Sun, planets, natural satellites (moon), asteroids,
meteoroids and comets.
The Sun is the largest object that gives out its own light and heat in the Solar System. It is
the only star in the Solar System.
A planet is a large object that moves around the Sun and does not give out its own light. It
reflects the sunlight that falls on its surface.
The planets, with increasing distance from the Sun, are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
Asteroids are small rocky bodies that orbit the Sun.
Meteoroids are small rocky particles that orbit the Sun. It is much smaller than asteroids.
Meteors that reach the ground are called meteorites.
Comets are small, rocky, icy bodies that orbit the Sun.

The Earth rotates from the West to the East and it takes 24 hours to complete a full
rotation on its axis.
As the Earth rotates about its axis, it also moves around the Sun, and it takes about 365
days to make a complete journey around the Sun.
The occurrence of day and night is due to the rotation of the Earth.
The Moon takes 27 days to complete a full rotation on its axis and make one complete
revolution around the Earth.
As the Moon and the Earth rotate on their axes, the Moon moves around the Earth. At the
same time, both the Earth and the Moon move around the Sun.

The Moon is the natural satellite of the Earth.
It does not give out light but it reflects light from the Sun.

The Moon rises at different times each night and the shape of the Moon appears to
change. This is because the Sun shines on different parts of the Moon as it travels in its
orbit.
