12.5 JULIUS CAESAR
JULIUS CAESAR
• As the roman world expanded, unrest was growing in
Rome. Farms were run down, and jobs were scare, as
much work was done by slaves.
• The ordinary people resented the political control held
by the wealthy. There was also friction between rivals
military generals as they struggled for power.
• The romans needed a strong leader. They found Julius
Caesar.

After his death his adopted son, Octavian became the first Roman emperor and
was renamed Augustus.
• Caesar was once kidnapped by pirates while still a young man. He joked with
them that he would have them executed once he was free. They laughed, but
Caesar had the last laugh when he later captured them and had them killed.
• While in Egypt he fell in love with the queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. He helped her
to become pharaoh and had a child with her.
• Caesar fought for control and won, becoming the dictator of the Roman world,
ending the Roman Republic.

• In Feb 44 BC Caesar was appointed as ‘dictator for life’.
His success and ambition was too much for some
senators. On 15th March in 44 BC a group of about 60
senators, which included some of his friends and former
allies stabbed Caesar 23 times when he entered the
Senate house – killing him. Caesar’s death led to the
outbreak of war which lasted 15 years.

The Roman Empire
 Rome then became known as an empire which is a nation or group of territories
ruled by a single powerful leader, or emperor. Led by Augustus.
 In 27 B.C., Caesar’s adopted son, Octavian [Augustus] was named the first
emperor of Rome. He ruled wisely and built roads, aqueducts and buildings,
creating the biggest empire in history.
 Augustus ruled the Roman Empire for more than 40 years, known as the Augustan
Age.
 Augustus brought peace back to the Romans. He knew the Romans hated
the idea of a king so he brought back the old Republic and he was the first
citizen.
