Dr. Teresa Rose-Hellekant (University of Minnesota-Duluth) classes – Master in Cell Biology 2009/2010
Day 1: March 15; Day 2: March 16; Day 3: March 17; Day 4: March 18
(classes will be held in the computer room of the Anthropology Institute so that students can have access to
computers; classes will be held in the afternoon, saving any later change, in a time to be scheduled)
The goal is to advance understanding of breast cancer biology using two breast cancer cases as case studies.
Students will be provided with an abstract of two breast cancer cases including diagnostic results prior to the
first class. Students will break down into small groups and research several aspects of breast cancer over the
next four classes.
The first two class periods students will carry out literature and web-based investigations and share knowledge
with each other and the facilitator (Rose-Hellekant). The facilitator will guide literature and web-based
searches and keep student efforts focused. Students will probably need to work outside of class to accomplish
the readings relevant to their work task. In the last half of the 3rd class, students will present their findings as 10minute group presentations to their peers. The remaining groups will present in the fourth class. The goal is to
decide a course of treatment for these two patients that is based on the culmination of class findings.
Note: There should be 2-3 students per group. Work groups will include investigations of:
1. The basis of breast cancer classification using histopathological evaluation.
2. The molecular classification of breast cancer which is being analyzed preclinically.
3. The theory of breast cancer cells of origin.
4. Underlying risk factors for breast cancer development, underlying causes and modeling.
5. Known genetic susceptibility to breast cancer and underlying mechanisms.
6. Breast cancer susceptibility periods during developmental and with age.
7. Breast cancer prevention for first and subsequent cancers.
8. Nonsurgical breast cancer treatment options.
