Primary care
We’re coming to a location near
you with all you need to know about
prostate disease in primary care.
Please visit prostatecanceruk.org/masterclass for a full list of dates and venues.
Our prostate masterclass will take you from pre-diagnosis (PSA and its complexities)
to the full range of prostate problems (BPH/LUTS, prostatitis and prostate cancer)
and the side effects of treatment. You’ll also get to hear the patient’s side of the story.
This RCGP accredited event is created by health professionals for health
professionals. So whether you want to hear from renowned prostate experts or
connect with other primary care professionals, this is the event for you.
Why you need to attend?
• Over 300,000 men in the UK are living with and after prostate cancer.
• Around 3.2 million men in the UK, aged over 50 suffer from the symptoms of
benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

some time in their life.
That’s why Prostate Cancer UK is here; fighting to help more men survive prostate
cancer and enjoy a better quality of life.

Programme highlights
Delegates are encouraged to participate and engage with speakers and colleagues
by asking questions throughout the day.
• Prostate cancer
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and the first stage of the
diagnostic pathway is often with the GP. We look at the rest of the pathway
including TRUS, biopsy, bone scans and MRI before discussing Gleason scoring
and clinical staging. We will go through the treatment options in early and
advanced prostate cancer and what to expect when patients are discharged.
• BPH/LUTS
Enlarged prostate affects around a third of men over the age of 50. We cover
issues around diagnosis including distinction between storage and voiding,
overactive bladder, presentation and under-reporting. It also covers medical
management, who to refer to secondary care and what happens when you do,
with case scenarios for debate.
• Case studies on PSA and benign disease
Putting the theory into practice through a practical exercise exploring real patient
case studies, comparing your approach to that taken by the speaker. •
• Prostatitis
Often called the ‘cinderella’ of the three prostate diseases, we will look at
what prostatitis is, the difference between acute and chronic forms, practical
management for treating it in primary care and when to refer to secondary care.
•
• PSA and its complexities
Panel discussion and audience debate around the thorny issue of PSA testing.
What is it? What is it useful for? What is the latest medical research and NICE
guidance on PSA testing? Debate will be further stimulated by specific case
scenarios relating to BPH and prostate cancer.
•
• Prostate cancer: the patient’s story
•
A patient shares their personal experience of prostate cancer.
In the primary care setting, you are likely to be required to deal with the side effects
secondary care treatments can have on men and their families. We will look at
issues such as continence, erectile dysfunction and psychological well being.
• Side effects of treatment
