Geography
1
Introduction to Physical Geography:
During the first session, you will be introduced to physical
geography at University level and what that entails. A Doctoral
Student in the geography department at Sussex who works as a
climate scientist will then provide you with a mini lecture
focusing on the hot topic of climate change. You will then have
the opportunity to create posters highlighting the factors
influencing climate change and the effect it has on people
through group discussion.
Importance of Quantitative Methods:
The second session will focus on the importance of quantitative
skills in geography. It is essential to know how significant your
research results are and the way to test this is through
statistical analysis. During this session, you will have a chance to
work out some statistics on a small dataset. This will highlight
the importance of understanding such metrics such as average,
standard deviation and correlations.
2 Field Trip:
On the second day you will have the exciting opportunity to
visit the white chalk cliffs at the Marina. This geological feature
is currently being studied by one of Sussex’s geography
students testing effects of different temperature on slope
failure. The second part of the trip will include learning how to
use a GPS and find specific locations and mark them.
3 Introduction to Human Geography:
On the final day students will be introduced to the concept of
human geography with a focus on sustainability and how to
achieve it. Students will have the chance to create mind maps of
the concept of sustainability and how it should be measured
using 3 pillars of understanding: environment, economy and
society. This aims to show students the importance of critical
thinking and how to weigh up trade-offs and complementarities
in real world scenarios.
The Sussex Study Geography
Experience will provide you
with an opportunity to explore,
critique and understand the
different aspects within
geography.
Through engaging seminar and
group work sessions you will
be provided with an
opportunity to challenge
contemporary issues in
geography such as climate
change and impacts on society
and what that means and what
can be done about it.
It is important to understand
that geography is not only about
the physical changes that occur
in the world due to natural
hazards or climate change but
the influence those changes
have on people and how to
measure that effect on society.
