1 LOW STOMACH ACID TEST 2 3 WHY TEST STOMACH ACID LEVELS Stomach acid is an essential part of the digestion of food. Stress may be a major factor in reducing its production WHAT IS THE STOMACH ACIDS FUNCTION When protein foods are consumed it enters the stomach where the stomach acid breaks it down into smaller parts. The acidity from the partly digested protein enters the small intestine which signals to the pancreas to excrete enzymes that further breakdown the protein in order for the body to absorb and digest it. If the stomach acid is not sufficient the food may not initially be broken down thus compromising the body’s digestion, this may then cause symptoms of feeling bloated and constipated. THE STOMACH ACID TEST On an empty stomach which is either 4hours after food and drink or preferably first thing in the morning consume 1tsp of sodium bicarbonate dissolved into 200ml of water (as a guide this measurement is about two –thirds of a can of soft drink) . Once the mixture has been consumed wait for 5-10 mins, The hydrochloric acid within your stomach should break it down to form carbonate which causes significant belching. If there is no response to the mixture there may be signs of low stomach acid . Low stomach acid that may be treated by consulting a nutritional therapist to recommend preferable supplementation to your individual requirements. NOTE: DO NOT TAKE TEST IF YOU HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED CARDIOVASCULAR COMPLAINTS. ALTHOUGH RARE, THIS MAY CAUSE IMMEDIATE DIARREHOEA WHICH IS NOTHING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT.
