Mental Health
What is Mental Health?
“a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or
her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can
work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a
contribution to his or her community.”
What is Mental Illness?
“collectively all diagnosable mental disorders” or “health
conditions that are characterized by alterations in thinking,
mood, or behavior (or some combination thereof) associated
with distress and/or impaired functioning.”
Mentally Healthy Person
 Accepts themselves
 Has a realistic selfconcept
 Has a positive attitude
 Takes responsibility for
actions
 Trusts judgments and
feelings
 Forms close ties
Mentally Ill Person
 People who are mentally ill can suffer from many
different types of mental illnesses and disorders
such as:
-Anxiety Disorders
-Mood Disorders
-Psychotic Disorders
-Impulse Control and Addiction Disorders
Anxiety Disorders
 People with anxiety
disorders respond to
certain objects or
situations with fear and
dread, as well as with
physical signs of anxiety
or nervousness, such as a
rapid heartbeat and
sweating.
 Posttraumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD) –
Caused by a traumatic
experience and can cause
fear, helplessness, anger
and guilt.
 Obsessive-Compulsive
Disorder (OCD) –
Repeated actions or
thoughts can conflict
with living a normal life.
Mood Disorders
 These disorders, also
called affective disorders,
involve persistent
feelings of sadness or
periods of feeling overly
happy, or fluctuations
from extreme happiness
to extreme sadness.
 Bipolar Disorder –
Characterized by extreme
changes in mood. Can lead
to risky behavior. Damaged
relationships and suicidal
tendencies
 Depression - Clinical
depression is a mood
disorder in which feelings
of sadness, loss, anger, or
frustration interfere with
everyday life for a longer
period of time.
Psychotic Disorders
 Psychotic disorders involve 
distorted awareness and
thinking. Two of the most
common symptoms of
psychotic disorders are
hallucinations -- the experience
of images or sounds that are
not real, such as hearing voices
-- and delusions, which are
false beliefs that the ill person
accepts as true, despite
evidence to the contrary
Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a serious
brain disorder that distorts
the way a person thinks,
acts, expresses emotions,
perceives reality, and relates
to others. People with
schizophrenia -- the most
chronic and disabling of the
major mental illnesses -often have problems
functioning in society, at
work, at school, and in
relationships.
Impulse Control and
Addiction Disorder
 People with impulse
control disorders are
unable to resist urges, or
impulses, to perform acts
that could be harmful to
themselves or others.
 Often, people with these
disorders become so
involved with the objects of
their addiction that they
begin to ignore
responsibilities and
relationships.
 Pyromania (starting
fires), Kleptomania
(stealing), Gambling.
 Alcohol and Drugs
are common objects of
addiction.
Fight or Flight
 Mechanism in the body that enables humans and animals to
mobilize a lot of energy rapidly in order to cope with threats
to survival.
 Hormones are released
 Heart beats harder and more rapidly
 Breathing becomes more rapid
 Metabolism is stimulated
 Could cause sweating
 All responses are done AUTOMATICALLY!
